Appy's interview with Lancs.

I’ve not heard the interview but obviously he comes across well.
As Voy said though, do we judge a manager on a good interview?
The fickleness continues with quite a few doubting his selection but then a big love in because he does well in an interview.
So he can talk the talk, lets hope he can walk the walk.
I mentioned on another thread that (against all my principles) I have a gut feeling that he is not the man for the job but, as always, he will get my support and I hope he proves me wrong.
But thats one of the problems with this reaction from people.

Its been based on preconceived ideas of who he is, why he left, him being a nobber, rubbish last time etc.

Most of it is not accurate.

So yes for some who had an idea in their head, listening to him can change that perception.

Afterall its a big thing, the person you'll be listening to after each game, who will motivate the players.

He says "it's one of them" a lot. Hope he's saying it after a good start to the season, because another cold start was my main worry for our second championship season. He's got from Day 1 of training / testing, so I I'm happy we've got the manager position sorted in a timely manner, and with an experienced manager

I disagree with an earlier post that Critch was good at interviews, he always seemed to look uncomfortable and looked everywhere except the interviewer, even when we'd won. MA answered some potentially awkward questions quite well, I don't think this is an area MA will struggle in as a nr 1,.

He also seems to get it that some of the fans aren't going to be happy, and doesn't appear to be fazed about it.
Also realistic about funds, overall I'm more optimistic about next season.
He'll get on well with Brett Ormerod if it's all about, one of them.

Another to add that I think he came across really well in that interview.

What happened with us before doesn’t even register with me, it’s more that his record as a manager is mediocre. I’m more than willing to give him the backing he needs though.

Body language experts having a field day with that interview though, basically he doesn’t want to work with Garrity and Brunskill & he thinks some of our players are shite and we need to improve in a few places. My non educated guess would be out wide and up front.

Happy to suspend judgement and wish him well. Unusual to hear someone who looks at Squires Gate and says "Wow that's an improvement"!
Yeah he's witnessed it in is original pathetic state.

So to him, the upgrade can be felt.

To someone coming from a top facility, its a backwards step.

Tbf it needed some praise as it has changed massively.

I think they’re added more portacabins and doing some other improvements too including the sprinklers.

I hope they do a full video tour.

He’s obviously an old school football manager rather than the new fangled head coachery type. If little things are changed I think they will go in a more traditional football management direction.
I think he may not be too impressed with some of our squad too, so expect a few on their way out. Be an interesting pre season.

…and here are the Danny Coid memorial pitch rollers….
Lol I'd just like to see it, its not the best site and we can see glimpses in videos of the pitches, but id be interested to see what's going in these portacabins, they aren't just empty shipping containers, some can be made quite nice.

We have to give him the benefit of the doubt. We also need the club and fans to back him. To be honest, I’d have taken anyone after that twot Critchley…. judge on results 👍

At least the Maxwell love in will end!
It will be interesting also to see if Keogh is still an integral part.
We have always done better with a small settled squad so me and Mr A agree in that point.
My reservations are that he doesn't rely too much on loans and then use them as an excuse. He did at Lincoln.
We should be cultivating our own .
Still we have a Manc manager onwards and upwards .UTMP

Good interview. Lots of different experiences as a coach/manager/scout. I think he might just do well for us. Recommended previously by Sir Jimmy Armfield as well. He knew a thing or two about character.
If we are the Lincoln City of the Championship maybe he can deliver one more crack at the Play Offs, who knows?
I hope as fans we can all get over ourselves and get behind the team again like we did last season. That might keep us out of League One at least.
I wish he would have a good shave though.

Quite a decent interview to watch and listen to. Might not have been everyone's choice for manager, but hoping we'll give him a chance now and see what happens. Not going to be an easy season I imagine but at least he'll have a full pre-season together with the players, staff, etc. Now it will be interesting to see if we'll be bringing in any fresh backroom staff members and what new players we are able to bring in.

Really good interview to be fair, put my mind at ease a little bit and came across really well, I’m sure a lot has changed for him in the past ten years and he seems to know he’s got a point to prove to us all. Just hope he can get us off to a positive start

He didn’t say ‘ermmm’ after every word too which was a refreshing change

Yes it was a good interview. Nowhere near as dour as the last time he spoke as our boss. Assume that was the Oyston factor back then.

Clever line about how he was in the same boat at the fans, but didn’t address the elephant(s) in the room — lower leagues manager, doesn’t fit the vision, wouldn’t have been considered for any other job in this league etc.

Otherwise dour, uninspiring, unimpressive.

The only thing I would’ve liked is to just give an impression that he’d done his homework - for instance - do you need to bring players in - yeah we’ve lost Sterling, Kirk and Robson and so we need new blood.
Of course as the interviewer said he knows most of the players and will have done homework on them all when he was Lincoln manager.
One other thing I would’ve liked to have heard an answer to .. ‘you have an opportunity to manage the games first openly gay footballer, how will you approach that’ .. think it would have made for an interesting answer.
He’s just a footballer, the ‘openly gay’ bit is/should be completely irrelevant

Genuine and honest interview. Without setting himself up to be sued by the Oscums, he said it as it was then and why he left.
I hope he does very well.
How good does the pitch and stadium look in the background too 👍

MA impressed me with his knowledge, sincerity and seeming desire to do well with the club. He's obviously a bright guy and his credentials speak volumes about his knowledge of the game, and the respect that others hold him in reveal that he's recognised within football as being a talented coach. Whatever it means (very little) but you've got my support MA and good luck to you and the team for 22/23. UTMP!

Don't quite get this 'doesn't fit the vision'. Why doesn't he? He's got a great track record of developing youth players and selling them for a profit, he's got a great track record with use of the loan market, he plays possession based attacking football, he's got a good track record of improving the clubs he's been at year by year with the exception of last season, which when you look into had plenty of external factors as to why not, and finally he's still young coach being only 2yrs older than Critchley, except he comes with plenty of experience.

So which part doesn't fit in with the clubs vision, I'm genuinely unsure? Seems very much the logical and right choice in my opinion.

He’s been a jobbing, journeyman lower-leagues coach for 11 years (apart from when he did a Critch and went to earn some money in the Premier League).

OK Oxford made some progress and wheeled and dealed a little before he Critched, but they were no more than an above-average League 1 side with a decent budget.

At Lincoln he had one good season out of three, largely thanks to a top notch loan signing. Went and bought a load of players last summer and they regressed (yes a difficult year for him in other ways I appreciate.

That was a great interview. After Sadler’s superb Three Years On statement I’m feeling much more positive about the appointment.

Seems to be a myth that Appleton is not very likeable.

Yep a lot of it is myths.

The vast majority have enjoyed the interview and were pleasantly surprised if they had ideas of how he came across. Never please everyone but overwhelmingly positive reaction to his interview.

I know he's a manager and may say he can take it but if he saw some of the reaction, I'd be disappointed if it was me.

I hope he would feel better knowing once people have opened thier minds and listened to him, hes at least he's come over well.

Still don't like him.
Will support my team but will never sing his name.
I want him gone but that means we will be playing poor football and probably in the relegation places.
Very conflicted.

Why don't you like him? Seems a bit childish.

You know for a fact if he gets us playing great football and beat the nobbers at home for eg, you'd be loving it.

Not sure what hes done to you to deserve the hatred....

I was impressed by that interview and I've changed my mind about him. I think he'll do a good job for us.

My initial disappointment was because:

-- We were psyched up for Leo Rosenior, which looked like a done deal,

-- I was still hurting from being rudely dumped by Critch,

-- And what do we do but hire someone who's dumped us before?

It's understandable that many fans were upset, isn't it? I used to be a moaner, but I'm alright now! 😂

I doubt Appy will ever read this, but if he does, I apologise. And also to Simon Sadler and the team for not respecting the due diligence you've done.

New managers are often coming into a club that's struggled and needs an overhaul, ideally with a big turnover of the squad.
That's not the case here, it's a case of building on the success of the last 2 years.
From the interview, Appleton seems to appreciate that - he knows that things don't need turning upside down, what's needed are tweaks rather than radical changes.

And he's probably better equipped to deal with that scenario now.
As a younger man he may have been inclined to make major alterations for the sake of making an impact, but as a more experienced manager he should know to only make changes where they're truly necessary.

Why? So Jake is Gay, why do we need a media circus about? Let him get on with what he wants to do and play football.

Like many on here I was underwhelmed by the news MA had returned as manager. However, having given it a bit more thought and also having seen the Lancs interview I'm feeling a bit happier about things. He is the most solid choice of the three we were apparently speaking to. And although it feels like the team's trajectory will be less exciting than what could have been under Critchley (I'm still quite shocked at his departure after signing a 5 year deal) I think we'll be OK under MA. He has plenty of experience at all levels and very nearly got Lincoln into the Championship. So, yeah, let's see how it goes. I trust Simon Sadler and his team. They've been absolutely great so far. I'm sure they know what they're doing. Come on the Pool.
