Are we being duped with EV's

Biggest con going, the govt are playing to the gallery with EVs. Mining lithium is causing problems and disposing batteries will be a white elephant. The range isn't great and I can see electric bills soaring when they are the norm. Oh and you gave to generate electricity in the first place.
If Electric cars really take off as they are expected to, any government has a huge tax shortfall to fill.
Motorists have been rich pickings for years, wonder how this will be filled?

Probably some form of road pricing, which will mean that people still using ICE cars will end up getting stung twice for the fuel duty and then the road pricing.

It'll also mean that EV's will cost far more to run than today's ICE cars.

I would hope that when road pricing inevitably arrives that VED and fuel duty would be scrapped and all motorists are just charged per mile

Fuel duty would definitely be scrapped, maybe not VED.
No chance of that.

Firstly, road pricing will struggle to fully replace fuel duty, so the Treasury will want to use that to bridge the gap.

Secondly, the Eco lobby will want to spin it as taxing the most polluting cars off the road.

Personally, I think a lot of us are going to have to get used to not being able to run a car or travel in the way we've become used to.

My main concern with electric cars is the infrastructure for charging them up. Not everyone, in fact i would say a massive %age, lives in a house with a drive where it can be charged up overnight.

One of the sales guys at my work got one. Stopped at services to charge up when out in the road one day and there were 15 cars in front of him waiting to do the same. Had a wait of over an hour.

Fundamentally I guess they are a great idea and gets us away from a dependency on petrol/diesel and the issues they bring up. Just not sure that as a country we are ready for full scale replacements to electric.
Not having home charging is a major disadvantage TBH. I live in the NE are charging at designated points should not be a problem unless your on a pre paid contract - such as Tesla - where chargers can be full on busy days or busy times of day. This bloody useless Government has only achieved 25% of the promised roll out of charging points. They are genuinely inept. My other observation is that the reported mileage rate is always lower than advertised. Mine in meant to do about 280 miles, in reality its more like 220 in summer / 200 in winter. However, not had a problem other than panicking about going over the Pennines in winter after one night match

That’s all fine.
If you’re Norwegian you can say with confidence that you’re generating electricity mainly through renewable and not pumping toxins into the air as you drive by schools. That’s a pretty good case for EV despite all the issues on Lithium etc.

In the UK it is still the same, no air toxins. Ask children with asthma how they feel?
Issue is do we generate enough electricity with renewables to sustain this.
The government doesn't care about having clean air. They have to meet targets and they are making us pay through the nose by eventually driving up car tax and electricity because that's all there is to drive.

Now being quoted at 6p per mile + vat. So the wife's new EV will eventually be costing over £400 for 6,000 miles in addition tax, because that is the only way these greedy b*stards can continue to steal the money from us plebs, now that some of us plebs can afford the EV outlay costs 🤬

It was a suggestion in the media but not policy yet

At the current time it is too early to consider changing for me. The cars are too expensively priced and in rural areas there is a lack of charging points.

This has to be the future. 440 miles in sub optimal conditions. Essentially a car that in sunnier climates will never need to be charged if used as a commuting vehicle to and from work.

Yes were being duped . Last thing I saw. Was number EVs will be limited in multy story car parks due to extra weight

MY son has had an EV for several years . a Jaguar Espace. he is a self employed Mortgage Broker. it is cost effective for him to run . WE moved to our new home last week. not much he couldnt put in his boot. HE just loves driving it. And if it has a wobble they send a courtesy car . NOT saying they are perfect but he wouldnt go back to a diesel. he charges at his home.

You have to make your own decision and have your own objectives. Mine were two fold: our business is very focused on environmental sustainability; and, I wanted to reduce my carbon footprint. I did a lot of research on the latter and was very satisfied that would be achieved.

At £300,000 each, it's not the future for most of us.
For sure not yet. But as the technology improves, becomes cheaper and solar panels become the standard for EV cars, this has to be the future. It the same with KERS in F1. As the technology becomes more efficient/cheaper/easier to use, it will also become standard on EVs. Eventually resulting in cars that will rarely, if ever need to be charged.
