Also for a ‘series’ I thought The English Game was brilliant.
Yes, that’s the oneIs that the series on Netflix about the early years of the game? If so yes. Brilliant.
I remember that one. You're right about it being Bishop Auckland. Think the trophy was sponsored by Liptons Tea.Yes really enjoyed Marvellous, excellent and shows everyone in it to great credit.
Imho I don't think there's been many great football films, maybe just that it's difficult to portray the live action convincingly, I don't know.
Here's an odd one I remember from years ago, never seen it since, but I do recall I enjoyed it. It was made just before one of the World Cups, either 82/86, and was a true story about the first English team to play in a "world cup", in the early 1900s. But it was club's from the countries, and I think ours was Bishop Auckland? Somewhere North East anyway, Dennis Waterman was in it I think. Probably more like a TV drama than a film I suppose.

It is West Auckland cos when you drive through it there’s a sign saying something about home of the first World Cup. Always wondered what that was about.I think the bloke from Auf Wiedersehen, pet and Benidorm was in it too.
I think the team was West Auckland, and they got invited by mistake, as the organisers wanted to invite Woolwich Arsenal but sent the invite to WAFC, getting the amateur team by mistake.
I’m sure, without googling, that it’s a true story.
Escape to Victory. Epic!
I did too and really enjoyed it.I watched The Keeper last year, a film about Bert Trautmann and his struggle for acceptance after the war. Great film.
Notice no one has even mentioned Green Street
Thanks for that clip.Remember me and my mates cracking up watching that as teenagers, Brian Glover was brilliant in that role, so, so funny! Sad end to the film mind.it's not a football film but the best portrayal of football in a film has to be kes. pure class on every level.
and it's the fair haired, slightly balding charlton to kick off
Didn't the organisers think they were getting Woolwich Arsenal? Thanks folks, West Auckland it is.
They played Yooventoose at some point, maybe the final, and they were all in awe that the ball curved in the air. Wish they'd show that again
Great Film in my top two with escape to victoryI watched quite a few films over Christmas.
This may be an old topic, so apologies. I watched "Marvellous" for the 1st time.
What a fantastic film, and a great character Neil (Nello) Baldwin is. Also great credit to Lou Macari.
loved the benson and hedges part tooMike Bassett is a great send up of the English game. Always enjoyed that one.
As re-enacted by S Hoddy at Baines in games lessons.Bryan Glover in Kes. I'm Bobby Charlton.
