Biden

In the same way Trump wasn't fit to run a bath. However. millions thought he was. Same with Biden.
Well how sad is that. Don’t see the point in making it about Trump. Deflection on how bad Biden has handled the withdrawal is not what’s required. While I agree they should get out the way he’s handled it has been appalling.

He's done exactly what he promised the electorate and pulled troops out of an area where he knew staying was a waste of American lives and money. If he'd stayed another year, it wouldn't have made any difference to the eventual outcome. The withdrawal wouldn't have been a surprise to the Afghan government either. His main error was overestimating the will of the Afghan government and soldiers to put up some resistance.
No deflection. It was Trump that facilitated the release of thousands of Taliban prisoners, and held talks with the guy running the show now. He was going to pull out in May anyway no matter how much he says he wasn't. It's well documented.
Things don't happen in a vacuum. There are long term consequences to actions...and in Afghanistan it goes back, in the modern era, to the arming and training of religious groups and tribal warlords when the Soviets invaded. It also goes back to George W and Obama. At least Biden is on record for warning it would be a shit show.
I feel sorry for the women and kids. Their lives are going to be utter shite now but I think he had to pick a time and he's done it. Seems it's proving a pretty popular decision at home as well.
World politics is ** shit sometimes.

That wasn’t the point, of course he did exactly what he said they would, but the fact is, he’s just plain boring.

How else could they have done it?

Ghani ran away to no one's surprise, he kept out of the country until it was secured by the US in 2001, the Afghan troops mainly ran away and the Afghan people hurled themselves at planes wanting the US to help them run away.

Negotiations have been going on for years, the Afghan people need to point the finger at their own countrymen, not the West.

Very good point Lytham

Callous weak man along with his piss poor administration. They have effectively walked away from Afghanistan and left those poor people to the mercy of barbarians where arbitrary rapes, stonings and mutilations will be the order of the day, a regime who will be ably supported by the likes of China, Russia and Pakistan . A land where corruption is rife, is anybody surprised the first thing the president did was scarper with a stash of money leaving his people to a deplorable fate, and countless past tales of money going missing so soldiers are not paid for months at a time. The west should not have gone in in the first place, hardly Bidens fault , but the time to leave is not this moment and this craven president knew full well the risk, is anyone really surprised at what happened. The history books will rightly be critical of Biden and in the meantime those enemies will be come increasingly emboldened at a perceived weakness of the west along with the support of China and Russia whilst hatred will be fuelled in the middle east by others, like many in the west sickened by this betrayal.

No argument, it all seemed a very panicked and very disorganised. The afghan army are an utter disgrace, which from a country that nobody can seem to defeat is pretty disappointing. I repeat that I agree its time for the US and allies to get out.

And then the fact this callous craven man then tried to blame Trump and the poor people of that country. This is Biden and his administrations fault, no one else is to blame, the buck stops with them.
It was Trump who negotiated the deal that released thousands of Taliban from jail and in the run up to the election he said he would withdraw by May - not August. If you want to bandy around words like "callous" and "craven", he is a far better target.

No Coppiceman, Biden and his administration have been in executive power since January the buck stops with them. Oh, it would not surprise me if Trump did the same, the truth is Trump is no longer president , the risks have been known for a long time, Biden has had plenty of time to take appropriate action.

And Biden literally stated the buck stops with him, which is more than Trump did in four years.

I ask again, what could they have done differently, they've been there 20 years already?

Biden asleep has more humanity, intellect and ability than Trump, it’s just a shame he’s not ten years younger.
Don’t forget Trump oversaw the withdrawal agreement and put gears into action that were nothing to do with Biden, he couldn’t do much about it even if he wanted to. He has always advocated troops shouldn’t be there though.

You do not walk out and leave these poor people to these barbarians. A smaller , but significant military Us presence with appropriate air support along with the promise of retribution for serious concerns. This allied with involving the Taliban more in the nations governance. I do not all the answers but i am certain a practical solution could be found. The US have been in Korea since the 1950s and that has hardly been perceived as a Vietnam.

I do not understand why a nation of 310 million people cannot find more suitable candidates to be their president.
Why put geriatric old men into Office America must have much more suitable candidates.

He could of thanked the Allies in his speech, and there was me thinking only Trump waved the America first banner.

Hellfire, some of you actually listened, the way he droned on, I just couldn’t concentrate and then turned the volume off.

A lot of it comes down to money, it costs a lot of money to run even a primary campaign and vastly more if you get the nomination, so that hands the advantage to people who've been on the scene for a long time, have the name recongnition, contacts and funding networks in place to run a campaign.

True, doesn't explain how we end up with weak choices though.

Eh, I live in America and have for 20 plus years but I couldn't give a toss, politics here is all theatre, the country is run by billionaire businessmen.

He has made a massive mistake not doing a gradual withdrawal and China & Russia must be laughing at the USA!! He read the speech, refused to take questions and rushed back to Camp David to recover and rest

And got stuck half way down. Waved flags around and shouted “wazzam!!”.

And then people would have said - “what a character. He’s very bright you know. Can speak Greek apparently” - I’ll vote for him 👍
He knows some Latin you know and do you remember that time he talked about table tennis being called whiff whaff? He was completely wrong but it was HILARIOUS!

Ladies and gents, your esteemed leader talking flagrantly about bodies falling from the sky and getting the date wrong.
An utter utter embarrassment of a President. Time to do what they set out to do and shuffle him off to the OAPs home and bring in Harris, who by the way has been invisible in all this.

Joe Biden is presenting as increasingly vague and confused in recent days, for example, stating that no one is being killed at Kabul airport yet there has been a number of confirmed deaths. He clearly seemed uncertain as to when the bodies dropped from the plane yet it has only been in recent days. He does not appear at all well and at times seems aloof and i am not certain this can be attributed to lack of empathy. I am not a doctor but and it is just my opinion but there would clearly be a question mark about his health. If this is the case and he is merely a puppet for others then my opinion of him expressed earlier on this thread is clearly wrong. If this is the case then those behind this are to blame for this needless suffering in Afghanistan.

Scratch an American and you'll find an isolationist underneath.
That's always been the US way though right up until the second world war, they were panicked out of it by the Soviets, they've not had a particularly great record of intervention since either.

All nations are isolationist by nature, only really involving themselves if it effects them or there's profit in it.

Bit sceptical Lytham. We went to war in 1914 because of the triple entente. We did so again in 1939 because of Poland.

The retreat from our 'splendid isolation' in to the precursor of the Triple Entente was solely to protect both ours and France's colonial interests, the Triple Entente merely reinforced this against the threat of the Triple Alliance, everyone loved a triple back then apparently.

Had our interests not been threatened in either of the World Wars we'd have been nowhere near them, we were so desperate to avoid helping anyone in 1939 we told the Czechs to give up some of their country.

Making it about Trump? That’s not what the reply did.

It’s was a perfectly fair comment. A simple statement of truth.

Whilst that may be true about WW1 I can't see we had any choice in WW2, sooner or later Hitler would have attacked as he did against Russia and the USA would have been next in line.

Yeah, exactly, when he threatened us, we weren't selflessly leaping to Poland's defence we were protecting our own interests, I'm not saying it's necessarily wrong by the way.
