Big Changes for Tuesday

Does the Manager have the belief and trust in all his first team squad players? If he does , then now is the time to utilise them and give them an opportunity to step up and make their mark. As has previously been stated, it is clear that a number of players are physically and probably mentally exhausted and in need of a rest. I also agree that playing the current formation in the last two games hasn’t helped and can only effect confidence in a negative way.

Our 2 pre season shining lights were Nathan Shaw and Cameron Antwi. I think most posters were very positive about their performances and they both put in a shift and had positive impacts on the games they played. I know this is pre season stuff and it is a big step up to League 1 full on competitive action. But when will they get a chance ? They are in the first team squad, their ability and potential has clearly been recognised and in an ideal world they should be given opportunities in a measured way when the time is right.

I believe that time is now. As previous posters have identified, if you keep doing the same thing, you won’t make a difference and you will get the same result. I think this a pivotal moment for our play off hopes and I think the Manager needs to be brave, not fearful of it all going tits up and show that he has confidence in all of his squad and give them the opportunity to play a significant part of these last few games.

So here's my suggested team to face Sunderland: Maxwell, Turton, Husband, Big Marv, Ballard, Ward, Robson, Antwi, Shaw, Mitchell, Simms.

Shaw can play left back, left wing or left midfield and I can see that he and Husband could link up well together down the left hand side. Shaw is a good crosser of the ball and while he was at Fylde he scored a couple and was involved with a number of assists. On the right side I see Turton linking up with Mitchell and we all know what Mitchell can offer when he’s given time and opportunity. Antwi can do the holding or defensive midfield role which he has performed admirably and consistently pre season and he rarely gives the ball away. This formation would give us more width and bodies in midfield and would allow both Ward and Robson to get forward and have a pop at goal when appropriate. It is also a great opportunity for Simms to lead the front line on his own and we know what he is capable of when given the chance. Also what better incentive does Robson need to be all out and at it against his home town club.

This starting lineup would give us a strong bench if required ie, the likes of Yates, KaiKai, Dougall, Gabriel, Garbutt, Thornily, Holmes and maybe Kevin Stewart if he is fit to return.

Anyway that’s my humble opinion for Tuesday and is probably the reason I won’t make a football manager. !!

Very much agree with you.
We will get nothing at Sunderland if we carry on in the same vein as the last two matches, but we can still cement our play-off place by winning the final 3 games .
Wholesale changes now would enable some of the more attacking players to have a well earned breather and I doubt the Sunderland management will know much about my suggested replacements. We have squandered the chance to give the youngsters their head in a winning side, but we have to try something new now. Critchley must have faith in them so let's give them the opportunity to show what they are made of. I might be less inclined to bring them in if there were 30,000 Mackems giving them grief but the absence of a crowd is a point in our favour.

so my side for Tuesday is :-
Maxwell, Turton, Ekpiteta, Husband, Garbutt, Mariette, Stewart (or Robson if he is not ready) Kaikai, Mitchell, Apter, Holmes.

Like you, I would be surprised if this side or something very similar actually starts on Tuesday, but we need to do something new.

I would play a 3-5-2 against Sunderland, pool need a different style especially against lower placed teams who just sit and defend
can’t keep playing this 4-4-2 style , yes it’s worked a lot but pool need a plan B as well
pool have 3 top full backs here who can go forward , mitchell, garbutt and Gabriel
turton can play at the back with Ballard or marvin or thornly and husband
kai kai support Yates ,and a midfield 3

i dont think theres that much we can do were not bad in defence its going forward were struggling jerrys hit a bit of a lean spell kaikai is eratic mitchell is quick but playing out of position i just dont see goals in the side hopefully we can pinch a win.

As I said on the match thread, 'why bring Holmes on 2 games running for just 10-15 minutes'?
FFS sake give the lad half a match at least.

Should have made wholesale changes for the Rochdale game and accepted it as a possible loss
to enable the regular first team players to get rested. but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I agree, changes required as it’s not working at the moment. If we go out with the same line up and go behind I suspect heads will drop. What have we got to lose, just go for it.

That was what Critchley should have done yesterday.

Realistically, he's not going to make too many changes and throwing kids in to start- well you may as well give up on the play offs.

Husband and Turton will start imo and Mitchell will come in for Embleton. Big question is does he drop Simms and play Robson in a changed formation?

Needs tweaking not wholesale changes.
4231 we have options within the squad to change the stale play of the last two games, we don’t have to rip up the script and start again, just change the last chapter? So to speak.

That wasn’t hindsight to be fair ... they were calling for it on the preview show as was I with pals. Seemed an obvious move following the Rochdale game, with Sunderland to follow ....

Big changes would be a sign of panic. No need.

You don’t make big changes against Sunderland .... you make them against Rochdale. Or Shrewsbury.

Agreed but those games have gone and we've lost both. I'm expecting to lose at Sunderland on Tuesday with a full strength team so why not rest Yates, Garbutt, Dougall, Ward and Ballard ? Fuck me, they all need it and it could freshen them up for the last 3 games that we are more than capable of winning ?

We need to press the oppostion from the start and for the whole game. Don't give them space to play and push forward rather than backwards

there absolutely no chance he will drop Ballard!

They need to massively improve the tempo and show some urgency...the manager is playing and looking more and more like Grayson the longer the season goes on. We are a very poor team to watch and to see the coach arms folded and totally impassive does not do much to inspire the team. The manager has had a very poor week in terms of tactics, team selection and substitutions aswell as results. He really needs to improve as anything less than a play off spot from the position we were in a week ago will be a major disappointment.

Why are you expecting a loss, 3-3 v Accy!

As it stands, we're dead on our feet. Out of the 4 that we've got left, Sunderland is the hardest and as we saw at our place last week, they're a physical / hard side, Gretarsson got the shit kicked out of him ! We need to rest players for this one to A, not them nobble anymore of our players and B, to enable us to get the two wins that we require.

I wouldn’t make massive changes for the Sunderland game just go 4-2-3-1 and attack at every opportunity
We’ve been so much better with this formation ie Peterborough etc

A couple of defeats and it’s like people have given up.
A repeat of the first game against them will be enough. Keep it tight. Ride our luck. Nick a goal on the break.

We haven't played 3-5-2 all season. We've done great against all the top sides in this divison playing 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2.

We're playing Sunderland and they were absolutely average when we played them. Very on dimensional. One of the poorer sides in the play offs for me. No idea how they are 3rd.

I'm not expecting us to lose at Sunderland and I very much hope Critchley isn't either

There is some panic on here and I love the (ironic I hope) suggestion that we start with Apter Mariette and Holmes earlier in the thread.

That’s what helps kids development more than anything throwing them into a pressure situation without having the games to adapt to the pace....

For me the team is basically fine but we have learned several things recently. Turton is a better defender than Gabriel and should start.
Ballard is our best CB and in the absence of the Viking and Marv Thorniley has done ok but Marv or Husband should return.

In midfield Dougall should start with probably Robson as Ward has been a bit prone to giving away possession of late although he has improved a lot this season.

Michell is probably worth starting for his unorthodox style and pace on the right. Kaikai remains an enigma but should start on the left.

the problem with the last couple of games has been up front. There is a disconnect between them and the rest of the team. Yates is good but is never going to win an aerial dual. The long ball to the front man is predicted on the front man winning the ball and either holding it up or flicking it on for his partner. This is simply not happening.

Simms is a talent but his inability to hold up the ball means we have no respite and cannot get forward in support of any attack as the ball keeps coming back into our half via a defenders boot. Yates is not getting the ball down the channels to hold it up either.

It means we are too easy to pressure and if we go a goal down then we are also too easy to defend against.

We could play Embleton behind Yates but I am still not convinced by him yet. Yes he beats players and looks to get forward but often misplaces his pass when we have committed players forward.

Without Madine we have no alternative. Holmes will come good but he should be allowed to develop over time.

Perhaps late in games our plan B should be to bring on a Husband or Marv or Thorniley and throw Ballard up top to win headers others could feed off.

We have a good team and next season will have a better one. It would be great if that was in the Championship but if we just fall short we will be up the top of this League next season for sure.

Embleton can’t play tomorrow night

There won't be wholesale changes - we've one enforced with Embleton not being available.

I think replacing Thorniley wish Husband is an option as Husband imo is a better passer of the ball which may allow us to work the ball better from the back into midfield initially instead of playing it sideways for 5 minutes and then having a centre half launch it.

Mitchell to come in for Embleton and I'd drop Simms in favour of Robson, both Robson and Ward can rotate leaving Dougall to anchor. I think Turton will also come back in as he did a decent-ish job on McGeady last time out.

Maxi
Turton Ballard Husband Garbutt
Dougall Ward
Mitchell Robson Kaikai
Yates

id be tempted to give young Apter a run out, a complete unknown quantity for sunderland to deal with. I think Ward needs a rest as well. thought he had a really poor game on saturday. Robson in for ward, hes one of those players who can drive forward whilst still doing defensive duties.

Maxwell
Turton Ballard Husband Garbutt
dougall Robson
Apter Kaikai Mitchell
Yates

Not against Charlie Wyke you don't want to do that.

If you want to start Shaw, Antwi and Holmes against Sunderland on Tuesday you’re just mental. Absolutely mental.
