Blackpool Airport

Cannot be much unless the taxpayer is finding a way to shovel money to prop up anything new.

Really? go on then prove its a pointless thread? I’ll give you a couple of hours before I respond which is going to make those comments look foolish.
Looking forward to this Jaffa as you know I’m interested in events at the airport especially if l can jet off to sunnier climes and being only 5 minutes away 👍

We were actually on the last scheduled passenger flight arriving at Blackpool Airport some years ago.
It was from Tenerife, arriving at about 20.30.

I am going to guess at the usuals….

Prop job….
to Dublin probably via IOM
to that down south somewhere

I would love a connection to LHR and/or LGW, but that I am guessing is a pipe dream!

Our early flight to Tenerife was the first one that was cancelled in September 2014.

Your couple of hours passed a while back.
Yer my teasing is over just wanted to give time to Lewis_Winthorpe to retract his statement obviously he thinks he knows better.

Was at a meeting yesterday at the airport with the airports MD and a few others and the news is very encouraging indeed.

A new air terminal is being built starts next week and it will be complete by end of year or Jan 2024.
It’s only a small single story building (for now) but considering the airport hasn’t had a terminal for over 8 years years it’s a 100% improvement.

An airline (nameless for now) is onboard to start up scheduled services next year and although to be finalised yet routes to Isle of Man/Belfast and possibly Dublin will be the priority and “if” successful the airline would consider other routes including European ones.

3 x new 20,000 square feet hangars are going to be built for a new business enterprise which includes aircraft maintenance/overhaul and aircraft salvage an American company (nameless for now) is looking at Blackpool airport as a future European hub for such work.

New control tower going up as is a new fire station and a new fuel facility will be built also a brand new aircraft training college is going to be built alongside the existing energy college.

There are no current plans for holiday flights returning for the foreseeable as it’s all based on cost and Blackpool airport was loosing £2-£3m on these flights even though they were pretty much full on every flight.

It’s a 10 year plan in 3 development phases but like I said things are starting as early as next week with the new air terminal building starting.

A brand new access road will be going in off squires gate lane.

If it all goes to plan up to 120 jobs could be created in the aircraft maintenance/repair sector alone.

Thanks for info Jaffa. 👍🤞🏼🤞🏼

Would be great for the town. Not sure how I feel about aircraft salvage ! In my head it means the airport ends up like the one in Con-Air 🤣

Tictoc have the gypsy king interested in buying the airport. Could it become the biggest traveller site or his private airport.

Recently the control tower was upgraded, or plans were approved to upgrade it ?, so it could stay compliant with international flight standards.

Also I heard they’d been constructing large servicing hangars for the the size of aircraft used for the holiday flights.

In other words, moves have been made to enable and future proof international flights.

Having said all that, I do hope those getting very excited are being consistent with their comments on other threads such as those to do with global warming and green energy.

Surely we won’t have avftt members spouting green platitudes, whilst flying around the globe a few times a year?

They might build the hangers, but for a 737 they need a longer runway.

No they don't.... Utter nonsense. 757s were regular visitors before the airport closed to commercial flights.
The new versions of all the planes that used to land are bigger and need a longer runway.

The low cost airlines (and the higher cost ones) operate these, these days as they are more efficient, carry more people and hence make more money.

Sorry if you don’t get it 👍

Boeing 737 and 757 have both used Blackpool airport in the past for holiday flights.

Agree max total weights can be an issue these days with the newer stretched Boeing 737 so they don’t operate at max take off weights they usually take on less fuel to reduce weight.

I’ve got pictures from the 90’s of a Boeing 707 visiting Blackpool airport but was a privately owned one (Saudi Prince) so max take off weight wasn’t an issue.

It's not just take off weight, it's minimum landing distance in wet conditions, so the larger versions of the 737 can't, in practice, land there, so the airport is limited to the 737-700 and Max 7 variants only.

Airbus A220 and A320 families would be more viable, the latter with reduced MTOW.
