Blackpool Airport

The developments were mentioned in a liveblackpool.info article on the 5 July and were in the context of the Enterprise Zone investment. The new terminal building was an offshore helicopter development, not an airline passenger terminal.

You need to read August-September issue of the voice magazine (link mentioned above) it explains it all in there and there is a brand new (small) terminal building being built which has nothing at all to do with the helicopter terminal.
There’s lot of other stuff covered as well it’s well worth a read trust me there’s lot going on and even more planned for the future.
Obviously a lot of work is going on behind the scenes so nothing is clear just yet but as I’ve said previously if it all comes off it’ll put Blackpool airport back on the map and could well produce 120 new jobs in aircraft maintenance alone.
But to repeat myself that terminal in being built now it was starting this week and will be completed by January 2024.

should be big enough to accommodate passengers waiting to fly to the IoM and beyond which is a start.

Carlisle has been closed for over 2 years.

Doncaster has the same owners who closed Blackpool airport in 2014 after they found out they couldn’t build a housing estate on it coincidence?

Who says Southend airport is closing apart from you? It’s up for sale that’s all.

Who says the tax payer is going to pay for the airport? The funding for now is coming out of the enterprise zone pot which has already been set aside by government future growth will be from the private sector in investment.
The tax payer is paying already. I really couldn't give a monkeys but lets not pretend that Blackpool airport is going to be anything other than a subsidised money pit. Peel Holdings owned (own) Doncaster - not aware that they had anything to do with Blackpool. They own all the land around the airport and its allocated for housing so they had no need for the land at the airport to be turned over to housing, It simply was not economic. The Council allocated £18m for new infrastructure but they left. Please correct me on that. Its a disaster waiting to happen and it will mean closed community facilities; pot holed roads etc.

Peel holdings tried to purchase the airport land for housing but the council fuc*ed them off.
Peel holdings also tried to take away all the GA traffic at Blackpool and relocate it to Liverpool but again it failed.

I don’t understand your continuous charade of negative comments regarding Blackpool airport I really don’t no one has has ever said it’s going to become either a subsidised money pit or a roaring success.

All I’ve ever commented on is telling people what’s happening at the airport if you don’t like what I’m saying fair enough but please stop being so negative when you respond.

Oh and Prestwick airport does not handle just 4 flights a day as you mentioned earlier as today there were 8 arrivals alone and Southend airport is not closing as it looks like a buyer has been found who has the airports interest at heart.

I don’t know where you get your information from I really don’t but I’d suggest a new source before you comment next time.

I hope its a great success, but regional airports are generally struggling, and the green agenda isn't going to help unless some alternative method of propulsion comes to fruition soon.

How much do these normally cost?
I’m not sure mate I’ve never priced them up to be honest.
What you have to take into consideration is the flight is only one way so you would have to book either and outbound or inbound flight separately (or other travel arrangements)
But don’t forget these aircraft are currently flying one leg empty so I’m sure this would reflect in the price so I’m guessing they would be very reasonably priced.

I looked online and most seem to offer only the full aircraft and not just a single seat like they do in the US.

If you were flying a group to fill the plane business class it would be ok, but for one of you it would be astronomical!

Just keeping the interest people in the loop as I promised.

Yesterday plans were submitted to Blackpool council for the next phase of the Blackpool Airport and airport enterprise zone covering 355 acres of airport land.

These plans include the building of 3 x 20,000 square feet hangars and 2 x 60,000 square feet hangers as well as a brand new access road linking Amy Johnson way to the B5261.

The 3 smaller hangers will house smaller aircraft while the 2 larger ones will be capable of housing aircraft up to Boeing 737 and Airbus 319/320 size.

These will be constructed (if planning permission is granted) nearer to the main runway on currently open land and subject to planning permission these could start in the spring of 2025.

£7.5m of government funding has been injected into this application.

Further phases include a planning application to move the existing air traffic control tower also nearer to this new location and the building of a brand new administration building housing an arrivals/departure hall.

Now before anyone goes off on one saying it’s not going to happen blah blah I’m just telling you what’s so far been submitted and what’s going to be submitted in the very near future.

Norwich FC flying in this evening if anyone interested ETA 18:58 on a Loganair jet their game is tomorrow at Burnley.

Wow, sounds fantastic, why would they build hangars for 737s and airbus if they don’t expect them to fly from there.

Loganair would be the ideal operator for the airport. Their Emb 145's would have no problem getting in and out, and they have vast experience in flying to the smaller UK and European destinations

An empty 737 or a similar Airbus can land and take off safely - hence maintenance.

A full one would need a bigger runway.
We’ve been though this already why do you keep bringing it up? 🤷‍♂️

Both types of aircraft can operate with a full load of passengers from Blackpool with MTOW restrictions usually reduced fuel loads.

Being 737’s operated for years when Ryanair and jet 2 were in town even much bigger Boeing 757’s used to fly in on a regular basis when Air 2000 and first Choice used to operate holiday flights.

Because it is correct…

They cannot operate at full load from Blackpool Airport, of course they can operate at a lower load - but not full….and Ryan Air are known for wanting to operate half empty planes!

The old 737s that Jet2 and Ryanair used to use are much smaller than the new ish 737s that the locos now operate - hence the difference.

I would love Blackpool Airport to start flying passengers again, but as I think you said recently - it’s more Turbo prop than anything else. La in the near future - which hopefully starts other routes.

…and before you quote London City…..It has a smaller runway and manages to fly smaller jets - that’s the City of London and not Blackpool.

I would love Blackpool Airport to be successful for passengers who want to go abroad on holiday!!!!

My local Kerry airport has a runway length of 2000 metres, only slightly longer than Squires Gate's 1868 m and fully- loaded Max 8s use it daily. If needed Max 8s and A320neo could be used at SG with no difficulty at all.

Read my comments again no one has mentioned a full load have they?

Every comment I’ve said I’ve mentioned with MTOW restrictions.

And for the record Boeing 737-800’s have used Blackpool in the past yes with restrictions.

I think it’s miss leading people down the garden path if you think the locos will come to an airport that they cannot sell out the plane due to weight restrictions - that’s not their business model.

As you have said before, Turbo Jets are the way forward for Blackpool and you never know after that.

…but if you want the big locos here - the runway needs an extension!

Have you read what I’ve actually posted I mean seriously?

I’ve not even mentioned anything about flights starting up again so what’s this leading people down the garden path?

I’ve said planning permission has been submitted for 5 new hangers 2 of which can take Boeing 737 and Airbus 319/320 so who I’m I actually miss leading here because Im confused now? 🤷‍♂️

I thought the new terminal was opening in January 🙄
Same reason BFC have no east stand and new training ground yet it’s called Planning permission changes.
This is now in phase 2 to be submitted later this year the powers to be think the priority is getting these hangers up and running and to get new business in to generate cash flow.

You said ‘of course they can operate at lower loads’ - how many locos operate with that model?

The reality is they will not for commercial reasons, Turbo prop is the way forward as you have said previously and I agreed.

…so the reality is if Blackpool wants any chance of the locos who operate the newer jets back - they need a bigger runway.

What is wrong with what I have said?

They don’t need a bigger runway to open up flights to Spain again trust me you keep saying they do for some reason.

Lots of traffic at small airports operate with reduced fuel loads its often cheaper to buy it abroad when they go out with minimum fuel loads and fill up on return a lot of traffic simply don’t fill up to full especially on the shorter routes why would you?

The flights to Lanzarote/Tenerife we’re a classical example of getting onboard just enough fuel and how do I know? Well one year we headed to Tenerife and had to drop in to Porto for a fuel top up as we were fighting against very strong head winds travelling south over 100mph according to the pilot.

There are no current plans anywhere in the pipeline to extend Blackpools main runway for a reason that reason is they don’t need to for any future growth and that covers if holiday flights do ever return in the future.

Where exactly do the UK/Irish locos operate successfully with the current 737s and similar Airbus aircraft - where they can use runways that let them only land and take off on a runway of Blackpools size or less?

Please take into account altitude, temp etc for the comparison of the airport as we both know that matters??

Genuinely interested 👍👍

Southampton and Southend airports currently operate Airbus A320 scheduled flights without any restrictions both on slightly shorter runways than Blackpool.

London city operate Airbus 319’s on scheduled routes on a 5,000 foot runway which is 1,000 ft shorter than Blackpools yes I don’t doubt with restrictions.

Norwich up till about 4 years ago used to operate TUI Boeing 737’s holiday flights again it has a shorter runway than Blackpool.

And not forgetting our very own Blackpool airport which had 11 European destinations at its peak all operated by Boeing 737 aircraft and I’m not saying for one minute they the were the -800’s and bigger Max versions as they weren’t.

As a footnote BAE Systems operate a Boeing 737-8B5 cargo out of Warton on its weekly Cyprus/Saudi route if any plans are to fly out at weekends in operates out of Blackpool as Warton’s ATC is closed most weekends but it has a full load of cargo onboard and has to have enough fuel on board to get to Cyprus for the first leg.

B737 and A320 family aircraft can operate from Blackpool with full payload but with range limited. That is not an issue for airlines if the range is sufficient for the route you want to fly.

Personally can't see it being financially viable to re-open the airport for scheduled services but if you could build it up as a maintenance hub that it does become more vaible. The commercial aircraft maintenance market is very competitive however so will be a challenge to build up that capability without significant government investment in infrastructure/etc.

I think there’s a market out there for a domestic network Blackpool would benefit with flights to the Isle of Man, Belfast, Dublin, and possibly a Scottish or London link.

Making them profitable is the key.

There's a market but very difficult to make it financially viable.

Of course - and this was going to be my reply to @Jaffa_The_Hut

The limited range from Blackpool is down to weight due to less fuel and runway length - the examples he quoted are much closer to the popular holiday destinations, so not overly comparable with Blackpool.

The exception is London City, but in reality that’s London and it’s mostly flag carriers.

I have no doubt links around the UK may work using turbo probs - but the holiday locos are unlikely to come here due to the length of the runway due to the reasons above.

I would love to be proved wrong though.

Withdrew services from Teesside recently. However, so as not to offend Jaffa the expenditure represents extremely good value for money whilst so many people in Blackpool live in poverty.
Wrong again Cuthbert lad.
Loganair currently operate a daily service out of Teeside to Aberdeen. 😉
