Blackpool Hamstring injuries

Played in a golf match today against Paul Showler who played against Pool in the Bradford play off when big Sam was our manager. Had a good career in the lower leagues and non league before becoming a widely acclaimed physio.

He’s working with a number of Premier League clubs and going into Newcastle United next week to try his methods in reducing their soft tissue injuries (50 last season) which he is confident in reducing by 2/3rds.

Spoke to him in length about all our hamstring injuries and he said he thought the modern sports physios and trainers are all being taught the wrong way.

He said hamstring injuries are caused by back and pelvic problems and all the gym work and weights are the main cause.
Thinking about it in the old days footballers quite often played 42+ games a season, had a few pints and ciggies and their training was a bit of running and sprinting but no weights in the gym.
Blackpool seemed to field the same team near enough every week in the good old days
I think he may have something?

Very interesting. Yep maybe something in it. As you say going back many years there were nowhere near as many hamstring injuries. That said, the pace of the game and the athleticism of the players is so much greater than it was and that must be a factor too.

The question really is what is different between say us and another team who doesn't have the same injuries.

It's worthy of investigation and I'd be surprised if at BFC players are doing more weights etc than anywhere else.

I think the answer is complicated but may be as simple as players stretching to reach shit passes, or making the most of crap ball being a part of it allied to the other factors.

It’s a point, but the game is massively faster and more physical than it was in those days. I’m not saying he’s wrong, he’s an expert and it’s probably worth investigating. Watching Man City today, and I can’t remember them having many hamstring injuries.

Interesting.

Well it is interesting how many times we’ve heard our managers say our players have been in the gym .. pretty sure bar a team room there was no gym at the old Squires Gate - maybe the new facilities are causing the problem!

I seem to remember one of the big reasons players were able to play virtually every week in the sixties and seventies was the use of steroid injections (presumably mainly for joint injuries?).
There was quite a big outcry about this later I think because so many players were so badly physically impaired after they retired.
