Blackpool - Horrible Place

Same fans were singing the same song at Preston train station according to a fellow Seasider who was on the train they travelled on.
blackpool council courts bad press/reports on Blackpool being the worse this and that. How else does the town get access to all the grants from different pots. Ask a resident of any other Lancashire town if they have; any newly built schools, any total refurbs to the rest of their schools, any new big medical centreS built, if all of their roads need replacing, if they have had multiple new investments to their towns and infrastructureS, if there are multiple investments to new businesses and buildingS, if their local buses have been totally replaced with new modern electric buses, if their trams have been replaced and the tram tracks totally replaced, if their council has built hundreds of new houses for its residents and upgraded many others, if their council has bought their local historic buildings and spent millions in refurbishment of them. parks, enterprise hubs etc etc. We are fine thanks, carry on with your singing.

At least the rest of the world is catching up, we've got huge tent cities here on the west coast of America. People going to the bathroom on the pavement, I can't go downtown without being screamed at by a drug zombie.

There's areas of Blackpool that are rough, of course, but there's beauty, charm and hope in our town and if you know where to go and where to avoid, it's a great place to live, I miss it everyday.

If you look at nationwide statistics blackpool is one of the most deprived settlements in the country. I'm pretty sure that in 2019 it was considered MOST deprived in the whole country. Blackpool also has the lowest life expectancy in the country for both males and females, the highest rates of mortality before the age of 75 and also over the age of 75. Highest rates of deaths due to CHD, also the highest proportion of the population smoke than anywhere else, and the highest proportion of maternal smokers at time of delivery.

But there's a pub near the ground! And a tower! ** mint!

BBC brakfast news have just done a feature of the Tower Ballroom which has just re-opened following a 1.5 million facelift.

I guess not too many of the knuckle-dragging neanderthals from East London got to see it at the weekend.

Probably too busy searching the Golden Mile for jellied eels? 😣

Africa would be good, anywhere but in Blackpool, most of them are not due to poverty, they’re on drugs and benefits because that’s what they want. If you offered them a job at £25k collecting litter on Aldi car park, they’d turn it down
Spot on. For every worthwhile case (and there are plenty), there are also many who are idle and just sponge off society.

I feel sorry for the homeless and want to contribute, but am guarded about this, as ive seen plenty using the money for beer and drugs and even others, returning to their flats at the end of the days begging.

Its these people who drag our towns down, and metaphorically spit in the face of decent folk.

Review from 24 Jan 2022
Night away
Eleven of us booked to attend the Millwall away fixture. We arrived at about half past eleven some rooms ready and a couple not but no problem.Rooms are basic but good for £30 a night, very comfy bed.We all went to the bar for a drink and had such a laugh we came back straight after the game and didnt bother going out again as prices and range of drinks are fantastic.Good jukebox and pool table. The break fast in the morning set us up for the journey home. Thanks to all the staff who served us.

I've had a good read through this thread and it's clear - apart from the moron football chant - that there are serious structural and social issues to address, both in Blackpool and the rest of the country. The UK's economy has been structured to benefit the wealthy at the expense of the poor; the South-East at the expense of everywhere else, and those with property at the expense of those without.
The country needs a new and very different outlook. One in which the crumbling town centres are rejuvenated away from commercial enterprises that are increasingly moving on-line.
It should matter to all of us that towns and cities like Luton, Bermondsey, Stoke and, yes, Blackpool, have failed areas that shouldn't be like they are in the 21st Century.
As for the moronic football chant, it's a sad reflection on people who want the opposition's town to be a bigger shithole than their own shithole.

😻I'm an exile and love going back to Blackpool. Yes, it has its deprived areas, but so does every sizeable town in the UK. Moreover, how many towns have what Blackpool has? Three piers, a theme park, one of the most famous towers in the country, a golden coast, trams and the home of the playoff kings 😀. In comparison, Preston for example has a big bus station!
ME TOO WELL SAID👍.

Blackpool like most towns has its good side and its bad side. It has its problems with housing that can be very bad with rouge landlords and a definite lack of investment in housing. You get problems with drug/alcohol addiction in all towns especially seaside towns and yes perhaps more investment in that area could be better targeted. I pulled up at the match on Saturday with my better half on the car park outside the main entrance to the ground and thought just how lucky we were to have a car park so close. Not all grounds are to lucky. I went in the match and had a great time and 3 points and watched Milwall supporters going home beaten and dejected and obviously not happy. The fact they booed when players took the knee said a lot about them. They have no right to moan and winge about anything apart from their own football club. What they say is irrelevant and has no bearing on my life at all. The people in Blackpool who live here and care about Blackpool with take care of Blackpool and Milwall supporters should only be concerned with Milwall and as far as I can tell they are not doing a very good job of it.

Worked in Southwark years ago and Bermondsey was one of the worst areas along with Peckham. Nobody is going to Bermondsey for a fun weekend.

Surely when they sing the ‘shithole’ song we should reply using the same tune

‘So why did you come, so why did you come
If you don’t like it, why don’t you f*ck off!

It's just the usual cr@p from people who live in huge built-up areas.
Jealousy is a pathetic emotion.
They will wake up to pounding smog-bound traffic today.
We have our wonderful seaside and golden sands.
Is that a bit too vivid a reply for them?😛

Look at the life expectancy of Lytham-St Anne’s, Poulton and Thornton-Cleveleys. Amongst the highest in the land.
All the vagrants that come to Blackpool because they are the only happy childhood memories they have.

The main reason Blackpool often is top of these kinds of lists, as the more affluent suburbs are not counted. Lytham St Annes, Poulton, Thornton Cleveleys, Wrea Green etc etc. Most large towns or cities have increased their boundaries over the years. Where Blackpool still is and will always be the actual bounds of Blackpool. if it were to incorporate the most affluent suburbs, it would be not be at the top of these lists, every time they are produced.

Or more appropriate and easier to sing
”your havin a laugh
your havin a laugh
we know where your from
your havin a laugh”

Those places aren't blackpool

That goes for many people in many areas. I know one or two who would say it is too cold or too wet even for that money. 😂

The area near the ground is legitimately grim and there is no surprise some away fans come away with a bad perception of Blackpool.

But as others have mentioned, I doubt you could find a town in this country that offers more than Blackpool - we even compete with some cities. When you know where to go in Blackpool it is a fantastic place, I love it - I always tell the Mancs I work with: "its the ** gaffe"

If it’s such a shithole then why were the mass majority of fans in the championship last season hoping that we’d beat Lincoln on the P/O final ?
Cos they all wanted an away day on the Gold Coast !
Fecking hypocrites the lot of them !

Think about what match going fans see, they probably see Central Drive, the town end of Lytham Rd and Revoe. It's certainly not the highlights package of what Blackpool has to offer.

I can understand why people would think it's shithole, I could also explain why they are misguided.

just been on the Millwall forum and the usual shit hole, horrible place is being churned out by the aways who attended Saturdays game. This is the common theme from a lot (who comment) after their trip to the Seaside. Are we blinkered? Yes i see some deprived areas like most towns but as. an away football fan, what more do you want? Boozers galore, fun things to do, the Sea, the Tower, etc etc. Other places we visit are soulless, one or two pubs we can stop in and the grounds situated miles from anywhere. It’s a stigma we are stuck with and doubt it will ever change on the foreseeable but it doesn’t half piss me off.

It all depends on how you view the area. If you look tightly at the centre of Blackpool and South Shore, its clearly struggling. Property and public realm do look run down. However, some of the wider area is beautiful and hard to beat anywhere in the UK. Pre Peterborough game we had a few beers in Lytham (first ever visit and has a separate identity) but what a stunningly lovely place. Some parts of the tighter urban area of Blackpool are also really nice. Statistically, 9 of the 10 most deprived areas for deprivation on the Government's local neighbourhoods are in Blackpool, the other being Jaywick. Comments on here recognise that other places have their own problems and good areas. What Blackpool is - unique - its a very special place which is distinct and full of character - if you see a picture of Blackpool wherever you are in the world you know its Blackpool. To me that makes it a wonderful place, I would hate to live in suburban Berkshire with identikit towns.
