Government ministers in charge of leveling up have announced £40 millilion for new Blackpool multiversity to go ahead. Part of a £200 million package for the North West Region.
 
My roof is leaking; the foundations are crumbling; I can't afford to heat the house; I have to use Food Banks; I've had to sell my car as I can't afford to run it.

But the Government has bought me a new pair of curtains for the Living Room window.

Should I be grateful, or should I be cynical and see this as window dressing?

Be as cynical as you like. It's not earth shattering and it's not a huge amount. But it's going to do some good for the town so in my opinion it's good news. Unless it doesn't fit your gloomy, agenda driven opinion. In your case it obviously doesn't.
 
I’ve know idea what a multiversity is but it sounds like good news.
 
Always said Blackpool should have a proper university. Could transform all those run down hotels and b&bs into decent student accommodation.

I have no idea what a multiversity is mind you!!

Will be the leader in education, new degree's have been planned for harry potter, love island, big brother degree's for future students. More will be introduced to accommodate future gender tastes. Revoe is up in arms over this.
 
Well done Scott Benton for working tirelessly in getting this over the line.

Done more for Blackpool in 2 years than Gordon Marsden did in 3 decades.

Oh and I’ve been a Labour supporter for over 40 years but sometimes you just have to except it.

... doesn't the word 'university' already imply lots of different disciplines in one place? Multiversity surely would mean lots of different campuses across a large area

It will be a uni that also does all of the voacational stuff still, too... Apprentiships, trades etc. Is my understanding. Anyway, it's good news.

Correct ,the site is in the Talbot Gateway regeneration area , back of Sainsburys . Cookson St , George St , Charles St , Middle of that area .
Massive redevelopment of an area that needs regeneration.

Upgrade maybe, but it’s new money apparently. So I don’t get your point. Apart from the fact this particular good news for the town hasn’t been overseen by a Labour government

Because its smoke and mirrors. This should be paid by local council money but its all been stripped by central Govt. They have literally taken billions away, then give back a few million, for which we're supposed to be grateful.

Never mind the money wasted in actually bidding for this against every other council, the vast majority of whom got nothing.

It's a sham. Anyway, see what @Seasider1887 has to say.

most universities tend to have multiple campuses. i have to admit this tendency to weird/new nomenclature particularly when its something already understood drives me nuts. the only reason for me that its not called a university is because it wont be one and it will end up being some sorry assed excuse for a further educational establishment.

Somebody mentioned it above, Blackpool would be a fantastic university town,

I don't doubt that, but you look where this round of funding has gone and there are some strange decisions. Good to see the PM's constituency got £20 million. I'm sure it's needed.

I think it reasonable to assume it is in the most deprived areas, wouldn't you agree?

The fact that the vast majority of this Levelling up / bribing the electorate money has gone to Tory constituencies is yet more evidence of the corruption at the heart of this non elected, non mandated, Government. Wizard is bob on, they have removed vast amounts from the Blackpool and Fylde councils budgets, and some of you are creaming your pants at a soupçon of it returning.

Richmond in Yorkshire needs levelling up? Yeh, right.

I think that Blackpool council turned down the chance to have a university in the 60's.
What is now Lancaster University could have been built in Blackpool, in fact that was the original plan. But council chiefs didn't want it - someone who was around at that time could perhaps enlighten us.
Given the contribution that students make to the local economy it would have made a big difference.

And the Blackpool and Fylde Councils and many other councils around the country have wasted millions upon millions of public money.
So perhaps if there hadn't been so much waste and councils had got their act together, maybe there wouldn't have been so many cuts to the budgets? Or maybe there would have been? Neither you nor I know the answer to that.
What I do know though is the way councils have wasted money, as I've witnessed it first hand.
I can give you numerous examples of it if you want.
There's fault on both sides here, local and central government. Always two sides to an argument.
 
From what I’ve read, multiversity is an American concept, and while it did well for a time, there are questions being asked now.

Agree 100%. And the biggest wasters of all have been the Tory Government in the last three years. It is literally in to the hundreds of billions. And they are still doing it, £20 million to affluent Richmond in Yorkshire?

Agreed. There's fault and waste on both sides.
I wouldn't know if the money allocated to Richmond is a waste or not. I'll have a look at exactly
what it's been awarded for before I make judgement on that.
 
£19M to regenerate Catterick Town Centre. Now, if it was £19M to regenerate Catterick Garrison, with decent housing and facilities, that I could get behind.
 
Lancaster are on the expansion at the moment. They’ve just opened a maths college in Preston. Ambitions of a ‘Oxford of the north’ stretching around the extended area.
