Blackpool v Barnsley Official Matchday Thread 20.04.24

70 minutes of very very very good football, three good goals. let them back into it a bit, and then for some inexplicable reason we bring on the walking (never actually running) liability that is Ollie effing Norburn. at which point we sit back we dont play with energy, and we instantly lose control of the midfield. please, pretty please, with cherries and chocolate drops on top mr critchley never ever ever put norburn in a tangerine shirt again.

apart from that - good win, dembele, carey, coulson, all in the zone, Hamilton had a very good game, bees and lavery worked their nuts off, Byers had control of the midfield. That first seventy minutes was how this team can play.

We all know that so why haven’t they done so on a consistent basis?

That was a brilliant game of football from the first whistle.Tempo, moving the ball quickly, intensity.Everything we haven’t been all season.

Carey’s goal another quality strike into the corner.I would just say I think their keeper should’ve saved that really.

For their goal Marvin somehow lost the challenge for the header. He is that tall and he crouched down?!what’s that about

Coulson outstanding today.Matt Pennington equally.Hamilton much better than last week.He has realised he can get the ball onto his left foot when he is out on that side and I thought he put some decent crosses into the back post we just lacked anyone in that area and they mostly went out of play.Beesley terrific aswell. His disallowed goal was a deft finish. He held the ball up well and won everything in the air.

Dan Grimshaw easily the best keeper we have had since Steve Banks. That double save was ridiculous.

Brilliant performance. What will be will be.UTP

dont we just do it the hard way. DONT care really . WE go to reading with everything to play for. our record down there is shocking apparently. but records are there to be broken. . . We played like we know we can. just getting the consistency has been our accilles heel this season. one game and if everything drops its game on.

Cannot fault that first half at all. Tremendous display of heart and desire.

Second half started same but just lacked that quality needed to control the game and ended up letting them back into it. How Byers didn’t score is beyond me! What a goal it would’ve been as well and they’d have been finished.

Bit worrying how we reverted back to walking pace as soon as the loan lads went off but after the work rate they all put in for 70 mins there was bound to be gaps and Barnsley haven’t been in that area of the table all season for no reason.

Still work to do but we’ve got a good base squad for next season. Experienced/proven goal scorer needed along with a wizard in midfield and we’ll be reet.

Gunna be an agonising last game even if we beat reading but I’m glad we’ve at least threatened playoffs after last seasons disaster.

Poor game management and let's not play Norburn again he really is slow and ponderous. Poor tactics from Critchley from the subs.
he cant defend, so what is the point of bringing on a defensive midfielder who cannot defend, WTF was going on at the freekick as well after he came on, and he was getting involved in the one where Kaddy got a booking.

I should be having a celebratory dry martini or seven but Norburn coming on just ruined my day.

shaken not stirred

I have been one of Hamiltons loudest detractors this season, I still don’t understand why he was given a new 3 year contract. Having said that, credit where it’s due, he had his best game of the season today by a country mile. Getting crosses in, using his pace, defending as if his life depended on it, well played that man.👏👏👏

A thoroughly enjoyable game and fully deserved win.

Critchley and all the players deserve plaudits for one of the most one-sided first halves we’ve seen all season. To be 2-0 up was the least we deserved.

We were bound to tire in the last 20 minutes after the effort that was put in beforehand, but thought we coped pretty well with what Barnsley had to throw at us.

Excellent performances from Dembele and Carey, and good to see CJ get back to somewhere near his brilliant best.

We’re still in with a shout which is all we could have hoped for at 3pm.

Good win and performance for much if it but let them back in unnecessarily.

Either they were shite and we were brilliant or a bit of both.

We could have had a few more goals.

But typically, like we do even against lesser sides, we often cede the momentum and it nearly cost us.

Some great football though and if we really had our shooting boots on we could have really battered them.

Need to sort the end of the games out a bit.

I thought our fans were a bit fickle, but I couldn't believe when after 30 minutes the Barnsley fans were booing their own team and calling for the managers head. There's hope for our lot yet.
Anyway, what a great game that was today. For most of it we were excellent but we just had to let them back into it. It seems that is the Blackpool way.

They're calling for the sack over on their board.

The players of Byers and Coulson quality won’t be first team ready otherwise they would be playing in the first team. They both got up to speed pretty quick.
I am talking about Sassi and Finnigan who both came in on deadline day. Byers I would consider as match ready and our third deadline day signing!

I wasn't sure they had a performance like that in them under Critchley but for 70 mins or so they were positive and bossed the game. The final minutes were worrying when our lesser players, and I include Norburn in that, came on. A vital win and 3 points.

Nothing wrong with my understanding of English. Oh,at least put a question mark (?) after your question. UTMP.
Well obviously there is, because every time I have said in other words, exactly what you have said, you feel the need to come back with a statement, which says exactly what I have said. The owner has other priorities than spending on the first team and good luck to him!

3-2 certainly flattered Barnsley. Quite a few of our players suddenly ran put of steam on about 70 minutes and our passing became ragged.
