Blackpool v Blackburn Official Matchnight Thread 31.08.22

We’ve needed a midfield general for the past two years but neither Critchley nor now Appleton seem to think so.
That’s an utterly ridiculous thing to say. I mean it’s literally been bid after bid for central midfielders all summer. So yeah apart from identifying players and then bidding for them, I can see why you’d say the manager doesn’t think we need a new CM.

Until we get the midfielders back we have to sort out our quality issues as best we can. Play Husband at LB and move DomThom to left mid. Lavery to the bench. Madine must become an impact sub - lacks mobility and impact when starting. Passing must improve and we've gotta pack the midfield and get on the ball.

Other teams, like Rovers, have a cat 1 academy and so can bring in a much better quality of youngster to their youth system. Which is why SS is prioritising his funds for it, because that kind of player is what it can give you.
I am not comparing our facilities with most others in the championship. Just saying ours won’t learn anything in National League or lower.

My thoughts for what they're worth..
Defence - had me shutting my eyes in fright at times. Looked like they only met for the first time a couple of days ago. Williams looked better up front in the last few minutes than in defence.
Midfield - what midfield?
Up front - Madine does his best but is an old fashioned target man. They had Diaz, a quality modern striker who also runs and runs all over the park.
I'm not always convinced about Yates at this level. Hope he proves me wrong. I did think his chance after 80 minutes came to him unexpectedly and he did well to get the shot away.
Lavery I thought did OK. There's a lot of criticism on here about him but there were times last night when I thought he was the only one really running and trying to win the ball, even if he didn't do a lot with it.
We deserved nothing last night. Blackburn looked on another level, even their youngsters. We need a natural classy striker from somewhere. And of course the midfield back from injury. Hopefully the defence may gel as the season progresses. They need to because we can't rely on getting points just by scoring more goals than we concede.

Re Madine, the way I saw it the cheer was for Jerry staying on after 9 was held up first by mistake and it looked like he was coming off - then 14 held up and Gaz came off instead. I can see how it looked like the cheer was for Gaz coming off as it was at the same time. Unfortunate timing of 4th officials mistake I reckon, he would have got the usual clap otherwise
Think you're right, me and the old man were talking about it after the game and he said the same as you. I hope Madine saw it that way as well.

As others have said, our midfield was ineffective. I don't know what squad formation Appleton intended, but the team were playing 4-2-4, which led to Rovers domination of midfield and increased pressure on our defence.

Corbeanu should have started instead of Gary Madine - he has ten times the energy, and "knows where the goal is" as football pundits say.

Poveda was lively when he came on and created scoring chances.

Apart from inexplicably not starting Corbeanu, this was a one-off game caused by our depleted squad. With our convalescent home soon to be discharging some of its patients I'm not worried about the future.

I would have left Lavery out rather than Madine. Corbs top left.

Connolly and Dougall played like additional defenders. We didn't have a midfield. We couldn't play out and we couldn't play through and they throttled Josh with numbers so we couldn't create anything.
