Blackpool v Bristol Rovers Official Matchday Thread 23.12.23

Yep, there are some real entitled bell ends at the moment, 3-1 home win and all they can do is moan about Connolly and the club ‘not being honest with them’. Boo hoo hoo.
Connolly always puts in a shift, being an excellent utility player is important to the team and I would be happy for him to sign a new contract. He is presently holding down a place on merit regardless of the flak he gets on here.

Beesley 8? Get a grip man, him and Lyon’s are the weak links in the team although in Lyon’s defence he’s that out of position it’s not fair on the guy. CJ left and Gabriel right would be miles better but suppose that’s too obvious. If he’s adamant about playing CJ on the right actually Thompson would be the better bet left wing back. And yes I am aware Beesley scored but Joseph or Lavery are twice the player Beesley is.
A nonsense post again. Beesley lacks first touch finesse granted but he wins a decent amount of headers , intercepts and lays off the ball pretty well.
Oh yes and he does actually score pretty regularly as well which , as a striker , is his job. I like the look of Joseph and Lavery is great to watch when on song but , in my book, big Jake is doing alright and proving a lot of folk wrong

So shall I lie and say it was a brilliant atmosphere. Bristol Rovers fans were singing football in a library and they were right.

Shall we just lie and pretend otherwise?
That means you must of sat in the south because i couldn't hear them from the north side of the ground, so was the football up to your high standard please give me your expert analysis

Do you come on here just to wind people up? Hopefully you will get a visit from Christmas future.
I think the answer to your question is "yes" as he hijacks every match thread with his nonsense. Think it's time to start ignoring him. That's what I intend to do anyway.

Great win today, we beat a good team by just being a bit better than them. Encouraging!

Beesley leads the line. Lavery and to date Joseph do not. 8 very much deserved for Jake.

Not the best performance, but job done.

Not much quality until we scored that great goal and what a goal.

But then very soft to allow them to score from a corner, all too easy.

It wasn't really a particularly impressive 2nd half, quite wasteful in possession, but we had a few moments of real quality and took them well.

The atmosphere was of a usual standard for much of the 1st but 2nd it actually got going again a bit like it can, was good to hear.

Positive. The January transfer window could be interesting, but presumably wed have to let some players go to bring more in. Hopefully we can keep Rhodes. I doubt he will be keen to go back. The atmosphere sounds bad there.

That was a typical home performance. Some very good attacking play. The challenge is that will probably most likely follow that up with an away defeat. Some dodgy moments at the back but deserved the win.

Fans couldn't be arsed in the first half. Bristol Rovers were right singing football in a library. Second half much improved.

Grimshaw 8 - Some important saves.
Lyons 6 - Not his best game and looks very out of position. He was up against a decent player (Blondie) for them.
CJ 8 - Very good and did some good defensive work.
Pennington 7 - Solid enough
Connolly 8 - Gets stick but thought he did very well.
Husband 7 - Defensively sound but wasteful in possession at times.
Norburn 8 - Great goal and performance
Carey 7 - Solid game
Dembele 9 - Incredible
Rhodes 8 - Great finish after good vision from Joseph
Beesley 8 - Worked his socks off and deserved his goal.

Thought they were a decent side but dodgy in defence.
Thats not a bad summary to be honest

Really good result, thats the sort of game we could have easilt thrown away like we have done a few times this season. If we can sort out our away form then we will be right up there. Off to do the Christmas food shop now, this should be decidedly less fun than the game was.
Only just got home, people have lost their minds, but I do get the TV to watch football on boxing day now. Sacrifice and rewards 😅

Good game.
Plenty to pick at though…. Connelly is the utility player in the squad. Should not be starting infront of Casey or Marvin. Husband occasionally still showing the error waiting to happen mentality.
Lyons offensively on the left is blunt (was today) got roasted by their wingback Luke Thomas a few times on the first but improved second half. Gabriel offers more pace there for the inverted wing back role.
Norburn, wonder goal aside, still in the jury’s still out category. Tidy on the ball but suspect in the defensive position infront of Connelly.
Grimshaw, 2 great saves but what on earth was he doing for their corner & the cross in the second half that hit the post ?
Pennington in great form recently. Dembele class. Front 2 put themselves about.

Grimshaw 7
Pennington 8
Connelly 5
Husband 5.5
Hamilton 6.5
Lyons 6
Norburn 7
Carey 6
Dembele 9
Beesley 7
Rhodes 7

Very unfair on Beesley. He was decent today and put in a good shift. Our best player in the air!

Grimshaw 3/10 for me again!

Possibly one of the dodgiest keepers we’ve ever had at Blackpool imho.

He’s cost us a good 12 points this season 👎

So it was all positive then ? !

That’s harsh.
I know he was at fault for their goal but the wind was causing all sorts of chaos. Just like the build up to our second goal.
He produced at least 2 outstanding saves too.

It’s not the first time… He’s a dodgy keeper.. has cost us goals and points all season. He’d be first on my list to replace in January…

Thought we won without ever really getting going.
First the good points:
- At least two great saves from Grimmy (who also features in the bad points)
- Pennington continues to impress. A good signing for us.
- Dembele is a cut above this league, a joy to watch and lasted 87 mins, so stamina is improving.
- Kyle Joseph - notice for the third goal the run he makes and he looks across a few moments before delivering an inch perfect pass for Rhodes to score. I think he's a quality player who will go from strength to strength, and getting him back from injury is a big boost for us.

Bad points:
- Grimmy - what was that for the Rovers goal? Deary me. Needs to be far more commanding for set pieces.
- Speaking of set pieces, we continue to be terrible at them, both offensively and defensively. This is imo one of the main reasons we may not challenge the auto spots. Set pieces can give you an extra dozen points a season if you really master them, and we've been woeful at them for years.
- Lyons had a bad one. I rate him highly, but he never got in the game.
- We continue to be very shaky defensively. More than once they sliced through with just a simple pass. We need to be much tighter defensively as a unit if we're to get that consistency we need. Last time in league one we finished with the best defensive record in the league, so it's a mystery why we've ditched the formation that gave us that, and gave us so much success.

Overall, it was an excellent three points against a side who'd beaten Bolton away recently. We absolutely must improve away though. We haven't yet beaten any of the teams below us away from home, which is dreadful really and if that isn't put right we won't be challenging the play offs. Hopefully start that run at Burton in a couple of days.
