Blackpool v Burnley Official Matchday Thread 04.03.23

Only really saw 10 mins of the first half and then at about 60 minutes ttv started working for me. A decent point and could have got something at the end. From the stats 22% possession it really seemed a rear guard action. We had a decent structure.

A reasonable afternoon now off to see the stranglers

I'll eat some humble pie, that was a terrific defensive performance and we gave it a real go in the last 15 minutes. However we have to try and take the initiative in other games, we can't soak up pressure for 75 minutes and hope to not concede. But today it was excellent and a point I never thought we would get.

Maxi and the back 4 were absolutely outstanding, all of them and for me it would be between those 5 for the man of the match, Maxi's 3 saves were like goals, so a hat trick which I guess means he pips it but the other 4 were a midge's behind.

2 defensive midfielders backed that up but I thought we lacked with the 4 further up. Josh was not on song at all and it was the right call to bring him off, Garbutt defended well but didn't do anything going forward and I thought Carey did okay, but that was all. Jerry gave his usual battling for anything display and never lets us dow, CJ and Rogers coming on changed the game in our favour, Rogers was excellent and needs to start and CJ caused them lots of problems and gets unfair abuse y many on here, he is just a scape goat I think but as an impact sub he is excellent. We may need him next season if we are in League 1.

MM got it 90% right today, we just lacked the attacking outlet and the supporting 3 Yates let him down.

The ref?? What a wanker he was, gave them everything gave us nothing. How their player stayed on the pitch I have no idea.

Anyway, as Raggy would say 5 wins 1 draw 5 losses

Everyone is going to get carried away now. It was a great performance but doesn’t increase our survival chances at all. Credit where due though. Nelson and Thorniley were superb.
You're right ATG, as Cardiff & Rotherham both won, so despite all the effort from our boys, sadly the gap has widened.
However, the draw will do wonders for morale in the camp & has moved us up 1 place

The Max critic will be grating their teeth 😄
103.9 Burnley summariser & BBC TV match commentator both gave Max MOM - well done Max.
I am one of the Maxwell critics, but I’m not grinding my teeth. I would still like us to get a better keeper, however credit where it’s due, he had a brilliant game today and gained us agreat point almost on his own. A special mention for Jud as well, some brill clearances.

QPR home game is massive now. They're in free fall and now only 7 points above us.

Under the lights, they won't bring many on a Tuesday night. Let's make it as intimidating as possible, shame Critchley is gone to give it that extra edge.

Get a grip on yourself

shocking from the refs, should’ve been 2 penalties for us smh
Wish we could sit down with the refs and show them the probably sub-conscious bias against us, presume we are a dirty team and we are far from it, presume we dive and we as honest a team as you will come across.

Moved up a place and took an extra 4 goal difference with Udders having played top of the league, maintain our position above Wigan and Udders then just any 1 team above to catch. confidence boost for the players and the fans to raise themselves for the fight. I think it has increased our survival chances, as Paul Daniels said not a lot, but small acorns …. Agree Nelson and Thorniley were immense, Nelson a great free purchase by Mick, he knows a CB when he sees one.

0-0 and we were lucky to score 0. No attacking intent from the off, Muric was a spectator . Not one shot on goal!
It’s paying dividends by employing MM not to lose games but drawing is simply not good enough even 0-0 with the league champions elect as great a point as it was.
I’m thinking we need to win 5 games out of 11 to survive yet we’ve only won 7 in 35 games.
Just not going to happen I’m afraid.

Agree with all of that apart from the Carey assessment - he’s been poor recently but I thought he was MOM contender today

We got an unexpected point but people getting giddy miss that good fortune was on our side. Without some great goalkeeping we were beaten. We need wins and where are the goals coming from?

How are we going to get wins when we have no shots on target?
We're not playing Burnley every week. You can't argue with MMs tactics today because we had to dig in and get something. My only gripe is not having Poveda to throw on in those last 10 mins as he's one player who shows some composure in the box.

Carey was really good today. Made Jerry's chance and got two penalty shouts, played 'in the hole' but got back in to the midfield and up with Jerry.
Fed up with this lad being described as 'ok' and 'not good enough yet' - we've spent a ** season tying to fit other players kids into our team and shifting him all over the shop to allow for it and he's ** better than them. We've pissed Carey about and he's the highest scoring midfielder, got as good a passing average as any of them, has more shots per game and key passes than any of them - today was probably the first time we've actually played him where he should be - but he doesn't sulk and require cuddles, love and understanding - he gets on with it and scraps and runs for everything - yeah, he's a bit raw and no, he's not been the right player for the job he's been asked to do so often, but he's a proper good lad with skill and vision and effort.

As you may be able to tell. Sonny is going to be my new Gary as Gary was the new Sullay. 🤣

Sonny has been one of my fave players since he signed and you could see the potential in him from day 1.

I think Carey always shows enough in every game he plays, but sticking him in as a mostly defensive mid is asking for trouble particularly when the other defensive mid is Patino

I saw him play in the first pre season when he'd just signed and I instantly thought 'this lad has a yard in his head' - he didn't look like a player from the 6th tier at all.

Southport away came on in the 2nd half 21/22 season he looked class on the ball.
