Blackpool v Charlton Official Matchday Thread 27.01.24

Bullshit. Look at today or any other game where the opponents have scored. Our inability to defend or score on a more regular basis thin is on the manager. What do youk his job is? On creating and better finishing what do you think training is for? Should have , could have, is the lackadaisical approach and mindset that got us relegated and wallowing in mid table mediocrity this season. Have some fire, passion and confidence. Reflect, adapt or pivot but don’t go through the motions.

Nothing like a game situation, and how can you blame the manager for players missing chances, you can train all week but games are different

I thought we were very good today, Norburn, Morgan, Joseph, Casey, outstanding - if we could play like that every game to the end of the season we’d make the playoffs.

Norburn was slow again ….. we need to sign a centre mid in my opinion or search our squad for one

some absolute shiite being spouted on this thread. Marv won every aerial duel, his passing was very good, nor one pass didn't make it to a team mate and some cunts on here want to pile into him because the ball hit him and went in.
Spot on ! Glad someone attended the same game as me

OK, I've calmed down a bit now. Not sharp enough in the finishing and allowed them back into it. On the player front I wasn't keen on Norburn's performance. For most of the game we harried and pressed Charlton. Norburn slowed things down and too often played the sideways ball. The new lad on the left played OK, without pulling up ant trees and Dembele was everywhere. Oh well. We need to make up for it against Stevenage.
Got to say your comment about Norburn is so wrong. Did you have a few beers before the game. If not then you know zero about football.
Support the players you numpty.

We all see the game differently, Norburn did ok seen him play better but i didn't have a beer to say that

He isn’t. Good player who gets unfair criticism from people who don’t understand the game
As someone who doesn't understand the game could you explain why when there is a throw in on his side of the pitch, if he can't take it he turns his back on the ball and walks as slowly as possible away. To me it looks like he doesn't want the ball, but what do I know

Just one of those days when chances weren't taken, strikers have days like that but onto the next one
Neither Joseph or Lavery are prolific goalscorers so it shouldn't come as a surprise that they failed to notch.
Rhodes looks a victim of age, too many games and injury issues.

I don't think he has injury issues, he works his stones off and there will be no one more disappointed today than him but he will be back

Critch has a better managerial record than Ian Evatt so why was it crazy to appoint him instead ?
Errm when Critchley was first appointed with no club managerial experience at all. Evatt had just achieved promotion to league 2 in his first job at Barrow who had been out of the league for many years that was when we should appointed him. When he did not get the job with us he went to a badly run down Bolton whom he has since transformed with one promotion already and looking warm favourites to achieve another this season.

Meanwhile Critchley did achieve a promotion with us and then left suddenly for Aston Villa after we ended 17th in the Championship from where he was soon sacked and even sooner sacked after a string of successive defeats at QPR.. We are currently well behind Bolton who were a division below us when he first started at Bolton and Critchley started with us.

I am fascinated how you assess managers records?

He is poor in that role too slow .. my opinion or are you one of those knobs who only allows their own opinion .. sounds like it

You can justifiably blame the manager because he's the one responsible for selecting the players guilty of missing the chances.

I dont get this Norburn dislike. He puts himself about and wins a lot of the ball. He plays good passes , tries to get forward and I thought he had a good game today. I did think that he noticeably tired in the second which is presumably why he was substituted.

Marv could do nothing about the goal, but CJ s lack of defending ability will cost us time and time again. His ability going forward masks his faults in some games but not in all. Today he did not realise we wear tangerine.
Nah, CJ made several interceptions when Charlton were looking to break or were breaking. He's not the best defender in the world but he's nowhere near as bad as some suggest. Id point more issues with Norburn as a "defensive" midfielder who provides no defensive cover at all, he's never in the right place to provide defensive cover and rarely makes interceptions.

I thought Coulson looked very tidy today. Got up the pitch well, looked for the ball, did something with it and defended well. A massive step up from Thompson. He was my man of the match before he went off
I know he's settling in to the team, he didn't have a bad game but was caught out defensively a few times, and going forward tries to do a bit too much, often missing the simple pass and his crosses were really off the mark rarely getting past the first man. There's a player in there certainly, but for me yesterday and the other times he's played seems a bit off the pace.

Oh yeah don't get me wrong. Weak as piss not being able to finish that game off. The general performance though for the first 70 minutes was very good.

I'd give him a spell on the bench. He could do with a rest.
20 or 30 min cameos, coming on to get a winner until he's ready to go the full distance again.

Missing chances is unlucky. But when Charlton scored We stopped playing football. Kaddy was tiring, and probably should have been replaced, Norburn cannot drive the team forward when we need goals, why sub him on 87 minutes? I still get the feeling that critchley's subs are simply to give minutes to players, as a player / squad development tactic rather than a game management or game changing tactic.

Its pretty simple a promotion to the championship in your first full season is a greater achievement than a promotion from league 2 to league 1.

Surprised at the reaction to yesterday tbh. We were clearly the better side for much of the game, and had enough chances to win three times over. It just wasn't our day and even the best sides have those. I'd be much more annoyed/worried if we'd put in another Northampton type performance.

In the last four games we've won more points than all those above us bar Peterborough. Barnsley just lost at home to a team we comfortably beat at home two weeks ago. Oxford just lost away to a team we beat away last week. I'm of the opinion we should be higher in the league, but we're coming in to form at a good time and we're within a couple of games of getting in to the top six. There are two places up for grabs in my view - only the top four have shown any kind of consistency, and nothing about Barnsley, Oxford or Stevenage suggests to me that they're better than us. We've already beaten two of them and drawn with the other away from home. We are very capable of doing this if we have the right mindset.

Personally i think you are wrong with Norburn, and i don't think his subs are just done to keep people/players happy they are done to hopefully win the game, the only thing i could say would be he could possibly do them a bit earlier

That is a silly comment IMO , every player will miss chances but how can you blame the manager for that, i have never known a player score every chance he gets, so hypothetically is it Klopp's fault when Salah misses a chance.

I`m afraid I disagree .Evatt has had nothing but success unlike Critchley who had a much more mixed experience and Bolton under Evatt are poised for another promotion. Critchley to any unbiased judge has a much less impressive overall record than Evatt and looks likely to be a division below him come next season but clearly you need to remove your tangerine spectacles before you can see that.

As you`ve made it clear you are unlikely to do that I will leave it there

Good point similar to Mitch Cooks left foot.
Having Dale on the bench might have given us another attacking option later in the game. Reluctant to sub CJ , who in any case isnt a proper defender. I think we need an experienced central defender , a younger Richard Keogh maybe, so we can be a bit more clever at the back.Sometimes we are easily caught out by lax marking etc.
