Blackpool v Cheltenham Official Matchnight Thread 25.10.23

Let’s be honest, first 15 of the second half we could have had another 3. Clearly Critch didn’t say at half time to sit back, as we did the complete opposite. The issue for me is 6 of our players forgot how to control a ball, or even pass it.

Grimmy was beaten far too easily for their two goals (pretty sure Maxwell would have got pelters for both last season) and I know the first was a mile offside but he just watched the ball go past him, and I have no idea how that second one ended up in the back of the net. Other then that one save in the first half, he had sod all to do.

First half an hour was brilliant, last half an hour was poor, which I hope Critch mentions in the interview.

That’s what worries me he’s such a dull bloke I struggle to see how he motivates the team I just don’t understand that second half and last ten minutes of the first we were second best for most of that match and we didn’t even play anyone decent
Then again you had him out of a job in September and the squad he has compiled and developed is now in the play offs.
You only need to read what Maxi and Madine said about him to realise what you see in public isn’t what goes on in the changing rooms.

Gary Bowyer is exactly the same.

Should have won that far easier, shows me that Connolly, Carey and Weir aren't good enough and Lavery has 45 minutes in his legs.

3 points is 3 points and we are in the play off places. We deserved the win but well done to Cheltenham and their manager for giving it a really good go as our midfield disappeared and Connolly was a liability, the rest played really well.
Sums it up perfectly for me 👍

It’s comical that people think he would 😂

I wouldn’t give up on Weir just yet 🤔

No chance of winning those playoffs though have we we struggled past Cheltenham at home we got dominated by Oxford we are riding our luck not a cat in hells chance we go up this season

Very good first half. Thought the subs were a bit random. Dembele was still firing, might have been interesting to give kouassi and Shayne a run together, lavery was still giving their CHs a torrid time. Three points,
Absolutely atrocious officiating again, just how bad can they get

It was nice to sit back and relax in my chair when we went 3-0 up.
Usually it’s squeaky bum time watching Pool for 90 minutes.
This time it was ok until the 86th minute!

Should really have buried them tonight but getting the points was the most important thing.

Yes their goal was offside and Grimshaw was at fault for their second bug Dembele hit the bar and Connolly had two golden chances which all should have been in.
We are pretty poor at playing out time and holding a result which nearly bit us on the bum like at Charlton but we survived.

Cheltenham are poor and tried to bully us and I don’t understand why Marvin wasn’t introduced late on.

We move on and we are handily placed.

Good 1st half, I thought Morgan sitting in that anchor position moving the ball about quicker was a big improvement, Dougall also played well. Dembele was good and so we're both wing backs too.
2nd half after the changes the formation was tweaked in the midfield and we went back to 1 holding with Carey and Weir in front and for me it didn't work. Thompson looked knackered too which isn't a shock as he hadn't had any full games really and we stuttered to the finish.
Hopefully it will all click together for a full 90 soon.

Looks to be a well balanced, talented squad of players to me, so I’m quite hopeful! 🤞

Yes, and the season hasn't ended yet. Pompey drew with them. We beat them.
Aye, and they haven't lost a game all season whereas we've lost 3.
What exactly are you trying to say?
Because we beat Cheltenham and Pompy didn't we're a better team😉👍🏻

I'm saying it's a long old season. So, because we've lost 3 after 15 and Pompey haven't lost any, are they better than us? Oxford weren't!
Let's wait and see what happens. Second half was poor and we won.

Jeez!
If we had won 6-2 people would moan on here.
Many we’re hoping for a scabby1-0 win.
We ended up with an entertaining 3-2 win
Cheltenham will climb up that table.
I honestly think people are moaning because of the Jekyll and Hyde performance.
Please explain how a team that looked like they were going to get a hatfull upto half time suddenly ended up with their backs to the wall defending for the best part of 30 minutes.

Personally I was hoping for a convincing 5-0 win and there was nothing entertaining about the latter stages of that match.

Just reading this thread on the train home after the game. I'm open minded still about Critch but there seems to be a fair bit of let's just blame Critch for the 2nd half "What the hell did Critch say at half time " etc. Is it not possible that the players just didn't execute the game plan as well in the 2nd half? The normal narrative is Critch keeps the handbrake on too long before going for it - the opposite this game but obviously it's still his fault!

Not Critchley's fault. He has to use his squad but sadly the depth in quality isn't great. That's expected at League One level though.

Poor 2nd half and we won, good teams do that, 3 points in the bag, but for Rhodes last min goal we would of been 11 points behind Oxford coming into this game, we are only 5 behind now, we are a better team than Portsmouth. We are a better team than Oxford. We are going up as feckin champions.

Just watched the goals back & Casey was at fault for the first offside or not Grimshaw didn't cover himself in glory either. Second I'm not sure what Connolly was doing or not doing. Happy we won but Jesus we made them look good from about the 44th minute.

Critchley will not change his tactics, formations, system, style of play for anything its like for like all the time even substitutions are like for like, personally i think its a system they are getting used to and will only improve as time goes on, personally i think at half time he will of said same again but things don't always work out as everyone would like ( like they made 4 subs at half time and changed the way they played). Listen it's three points and puts into the play-offs football is a winning business and sometimes you have to win ugly as they say.

Dominated by Oxford? They were lucky to escape with a draw! We are progressing nicely, the way we brought in Thompson and he stepped up was very reminiscent of Critchley part 1. The top 6 as it stands is very competitive and teams like Derby, Lincoln and Wycombe will also expect to be in the mix. Don't forget we have Norburn, Husband, Gabriel, Joseph and Lyons in reserve so every reason to be optimistic.

Connolly was the bigger issue for the 2nd goal we conceded, lost his man at the back post.
