Blackpool v Exeter Official Matchday Thread 14.09.24

Although on paper we should be putting Exeter away Saturday, it certainly won't be easy.

They did well on the road last season.

Had the 10th best away record, gaining 16 points from a possible 21 in their last 7 away games in the league, including an impressive 2-0 win at Bolton last weekend.

Looking at the highlights on Saturday nights I dont think theres going to be many easy games.

We are going to have to be consistently good to get into the playoffs.

Watched them and thought Barnsley were very dominant and didn’t realise how much they had improved since their home game against Mansfield.

Then watched highlights of Bradford v Carlisle and thought Christ, the quality between league 1 and league 2 is getting as big as the championship and league 1.

Tyrer

Gabriel
Pennington
Hubby

Apter
Evans
Norburn
Coulson

Joseph
Rhodes
Ballard

Our best XI IMO, Apter has been SO much better with Gabriel at RCB.
That looks decent but if he goes 4 at the back it will change it quite a lot

I think the key man in the middle is more likely to be Evans. For me Carey is way too inconsistent.
Let’s just hope he n Evans can link well together and progress into a sort of telepathic partnership.
S Carey and O Norburn look the two for me in the middle of the park.
Maybe L Evans to replace O Norburn if things aren’t going to plan later in the second half.

I'd like to think Bruce isn't that daft. Might as well get Critchley back. How many more games, managers, etc do we need before we realise that three at the back is crap?

yep, have to say it's a good while since i last looked forward to a game as much as this. A new start, with a new manager who has plenty of experience. Hope he can get us well organised at the back which really is a top priority and then get us attacking with intent and fluidity. Think Keogh in his two games in charge set out the blueprint of what we want to be and it now just needs tuning and putting into place.

The team i think Bruce will pick

O'Donnell
Gabriel Pennington Husband Coulson
Apter Evans Norburn Hamilton
Ballard Joseph

Tyrer
Gabriel, Offiah, Casey , Coulson
Evans, Norburn
Apter, Embleton , Joseph
Beesley .

3 at the back isn't the problem, it's how 3 at the back is coached.

Keogh showed it can be very entertaining.
I am sure Bruce will be delighted conceding an average of 3 goals as long as it's entertaining.

We haven't got the players for a back three and never have done.

Unlike most on here, I've enjoyed the break from our tribulations and am not looking forward to this game.
Have learned not to get too excited about change bringing positivity, especially as a Blackpool supporter.
Exeter will be confident after winning in Horwich and I don't see us turning things around any time soon.
In the last couple of years, we've been buoyed by "elite" loan acquisitions :-
Patino
Fiorini
Demebele- now a Championship player. What a coup for League 1 (thanks Neil)
Byers
This time around, it's been underwhelming to say the least.
Huddersfield knew JR is past his best, otherwise they'd have kept him to get out of League 1. Who do we have to ignite a promotion push?
Grimmy's departure is worrying and we seem to be uninspired in our ambitions, so much so that many are wondering if our new manager should recruit a couple of non-contracted players to bolster our average squad.
Last year we felt we should have made the playoffs and we were, indeed, in contention on the last day of the campaign.
What's happened?
We're no longer the club our peers fear in this division and are seen as a vulnerable, weak, ordinary outfit. We're nowhere near looking like a contender as I write.
It might be a while before we get that first win and I believe we're in for a long scrap to keep our heads above water.
Is SB the progressive, forward-thinking, empathic manager we need to offer stability and hope?
I really, really want to be wrong, but fear a hundred steps back before we " progress".

Don't give a f*** about League Cup or Bristol /Sherpa thingy BTW; it's the League that matters and we've begun the season horribly.
Hope I'm wrong, but wouldn't be surprised at a Forum meltdown, come five o'clock clock Saturday.
I won't be adding fuel to the fire, as I've agreed to escort the much " better half" to an art exhibition. She'll be schooling me in the works and perceptions of Monet on Saturday afternoon.
Somewhat ironic; whilst I'm learning about impressionism, my absence from Bloomfield Road, as a ST holder, will not, it seems, be reflected in the match attendance figures quoted.

I'm really looking forward to tomorrow, and glad that Richard Keogh and Stephen Dobbie have been added to the first team trainers. Generally the squad is better than last season and we should start climbing up the table now. I really hope the appalling system of having three at the back is consigned to Neil Critchley and the past. Onwards and upwards.

Roll on death 🙄

Be interesting to see what we get out of Joseph in a front 2, he's looked like a decent player in a 3 never really impressed in a 2.
Coulson and Embleton possible subs for Hamilton and Apter later on.
Not much back up for the middle 2 if we got an early injury.
I don't know how Exeter line up but i hope we dont get outgunned in centre midfield, looks a bit old fashioned to me, hopefully I'm wrong.

Don't mind old fashioned!

There'll come a time soon where everyone else is overthinking it so much that a straightforward 442 will run riot, and everyone will start to drift back to it.

By 2030, BFC will be hailed a revolutionary geniuses.

Maybe we should've got McCarthy back.
