Blackpool v Hibs Official Matchday Thread 29.07.23

Optimism slipping away a tiny bit
Solid in midfield and at the back,
Lavery good up front but Beesley did not cause them any issues, so hopefully Joseph will be good. I think Dale and Apter will support strikers and they did well.
Triallist looked OK but another midfielder.
We looked by and large solid but not very creative, but goals from set pieces finally

The average age of our back 4 at the end of the game was less than 19 years old.

The average age of the XI that finished the game was 20 with Jeggo (31) and Wollacott (26) the only players over 20 years old.

As far as then game went it was a bit pointless. Thought Blackpool were poor and our first team would have comfortably competed.

So Boyle ... first 45 minutes in 9 months ... and Jeggo were the only 1st team regulars, with the rest made up of kids and fringe players. If Blackpool don't record this in their official records as Blackpool versus Hibs XI they should be embarrassed.

None of them received a hero's welcome...
Well they're 1st team got humped by a bunch of postmen and waiters from Andorra so we would probably beat them as well!

Well, I enjoyed that, it gave me some optimism for the coming season , although Connolly at left wing back makes me cringe. Nobody had a bad game, Sonny Carey did himself no harm whatsoever, Norburn is different class, Lavery’s on fire. Great finish from Owen Dale , Beesley worked hard but in my opinion he needs to seriously bulk up, he didn’t do anything wrong but just looks a little lightweight. Encouraging performance, can’t wait for Saturday. #UTMP
Just reading through the posts and came to yours. Totally agree. Decent game and overall a good performance by both Blackpool teams out out. Very encouraging and they all seem to know what their responsibilities are. Organisation by Critchley. All the new boys were excellent as was Marvin. Agree about Beesley, Dale having scored the goal gave him huge confidence and he saw our the game very well with good effort and impressive skill. Also a big shout for CJ. I thought he was excellent today. Great cover for Pennington at the back, good passing and a few good runs going forward. Apter also was quite impressive playing out of position but really good on the ball. He looks the quality player we all believe he is. All we need now is a couple of good strikers to back up Lavery.

One striker will be Joseph
I was impressed by both Dale and Apter playing up front, but would like to see them playing there against better opposition.

I very much doubt that was a strong line up from Hibs as we were physically stronger, quicker, bigger from the start even though we didn't score in the first half. Good to see us with a proper midfield as last season ours was no better than National League. That will make us a much more competitive side next time round. Good to see the players mixing it up with long and short passes. Previous Critchley sides tied themselves in knots playing triangles and ending up where they started.

BTW There seems to be a trend on here for personal slagging of our players. Thompson has been getting pelters, then Husband now Connolly. Out of order IMO.

Criticising players is part and parcel of following football. However, I agree that insults are not called for.

We're not far away from being a decent side, but as everyone knows we NEED to sign another striker!
Don't care if it's Nombe, Langstaff, Clarke-Harris, whoever, but we MUST sign another striker or we'll come up short.

Lavery was excellent today and took his goal well.

Big shout out to Marv who didn’t put a foot wrong today. There was a few minutes where he was a one man show blocking/tackling everything.

Strange seeing connelly at LWB today but he played well.

New signings all looked good.

Gives some optimism going into the new season.

Beesley is like bloody bambi on ice dread seeing him up against big defenders plus his finishing is a lot to be desired !! Don’t rate dale what so ever how ever he scored after hardly touching the ball all game !! Didn’t rate apter today either I find he goes if boil rather quick still feel he needs more experience has the odd burst of class and tricky passes but does not last and certainly cannot finish

Only on AVFTT can some get so excited and proclaim us League 1 champions after a leisurely friendly win vs Hibs 19 year olds. Sums the site up to a T, loads of over the top reactions to what's just happened. Lose against The Brewers and we will be the shittest team ever, scab a win away at Derby in the cup and we are 80s Ajax.
1970's Ajax were better

just watched the game on TTV, first half was a bit meh, but we look organised defensively and dangerous on the break. we seem a lot more comfortable on the ball in defence than we ever have before, there always seems to be an outlet. The inverted wing backs is a weird thing, could have had a lot more down the left if we had played a proper lefty there, it seemed an odd thing to do when Connolly is right footed. I know it was only hibs reserves and deveopment team but we were very comfortable and the few times we got caught marv was there doing what Marv does best.

The two open play goals were both well worked and we seem to finally be a bit more consistent in set pieces, delivering teh ball into dangerous areas.

theres some ability in this squad, and it would nt surpise me if Shayne is the first pool player in a long time to hit thirty goals in a season - just looks really sharp.

are we gonna run riot in this league - who knows - but i wouldnt bet against it.
