Blackpool v Huddersfield Official Matchnight Thread 07.02.23

First 25 minutes without creating much we were at a higher tempo & winning on points only, then the poor ball up in the air that fell kindly to be poked in. The stupid antics of Madine probably cost us a chance of winning. As he divides opinion we'll see if we can adapt to life without him for the next 4 games I believe, if we manage ok he might find it hard to get back in. The second half we just about did enough to stay in the game & when Rogers came on he was all over the place in a good way & probably trying a bit too hard with a few misplaced passes. He grew into the game. Lyons continues to impress & although Bowler had few runs he did make a difference especially being in the right place for the second equaliser, that will do his confidence no end of good. Speaking of Goode not another hamstring Jesus wept! I went away quite happy at the end. We didn't get 3 points but we also didn't lose ground to them. Players all battled very hard & should be proud having salvaged a point with 10 men. 👍

I thought Rogers was absolutely shocking until that brilliant pice of skill for the second goal. He looked unfit and incapable of passing a ball to a tangerine shirt.

Yep I honestly don't understand the line up or tactics

We need to get at the 2 on yellow cards for them

Poveda and Bowler to run at them is our only chance
McCarthy knew tonight was going to be a scrap, which of our players would you have picked?
Bowler Rogers and Poveda are nullified when the ball is in the air most of the time.
Also Bowler and Rogers not fit Enough yet.

If I were MM I would make the players watch their first goal 100 times tomorrow until they explain how a ball lumped 100 feet in the air could end up in our net. That doesn't even happen in children's football.
Yep, it was a poor clearance but that doesn't excuse what followed. Either Madine or Connolly had plenty of time whilst the ball was in the air for one of them to get goalside of the scorer.

I'm not blaming the clearance. As you say, it's everything that happened after that, including Maxwell not coming for it, Madine completely missing it and everyone else ignoring it.

Yep. Hopefully we can revert back to playing out a little more now rather than lumping it forward, we have the skilled players to do it as well. Bowler, Poveda.. play to our strengths

This. ^

We knew it. Why the feck didn’t Mick?!
Is anybody at the club advising him?
It’s like he picked that team at random and drew all the short straws.
Also thought Poveda was looking good a few weeks ago- now he appears to be not in the reckoning following his failed lob at Southampton

Next change should be Grimshaw for Maxwell IMO - Maxwell too hesitant and doesn't control the space in front of him IMO
Maxwell isn't good enough. Crosses were coming into the six yard box and he just leaves them? He waits until the last second to come out when he obviously has to. He's not tall enough and can't command his area because of that. Grimshaw also isn't tall enough. Something to address in the summer.

Get lost gloomsters and doomsters
Worst this, worst that, leaving at HT etc
It wasn't pretty but MM got then fired up for the second half and we showed some fight
Lyons will be good but has a mistake in him
Great to have Bowler back

No no no no. It was ** diabolical. Worst football I’ve ever seen at this level and don’t you even dare try to pretend otherwise. We need to be beating dogshit like Huddersfield put out if we want to stay up.

Leaving 4/5 of your best players on the bench is unacceptable.

I'll say it again.

Dreadful team selection. What was he thinking? Everyone I know said the same. Even our decent players looked crap in that format.

Shocking performance. We fail to do the simple things and constantly either lump the ball long or just give it to them. We were so bad we were actually laughing watching it at times.

Huddersfield were rank. We managed (somehow) to be worse.

Madine. Well he shouldn't be near the side again after that.

I have to agree Im afraid. I want the lad to do well. You can't knock his effort. But like you said he did absolutely nothing until the goal. CJ to play for me all day long.

Just watched the highlights and Their first goal was a bit unlucky but I thought Maxwell had caught it so surprised it ended up in the net. Their second goal was a good strike but our players didn’t make an effort to close him down. MM has to sort out the defense as we arnt going to survive if we can’t stop giving away avoidable goals and obviously give our strikers more confidence. A lot to do but MM has years of experience

Everyone I spoke to said, at last, two central midfielders to allow the 4 going forward some leeway. It worked too. They created very little aside of the two goals we absolutely gifted them.

Going down to 10 wasn't part of the game plan, but second half I thought we set up to keep it at one, then give it a go for the last 15 while still in the game. That's exactly as it panned out.

The first 45 mins was laughably bad. As bad as I have ever seen, and that's going some. Two awful sides. Zero creativity in us. Misplaced passes, ballooned headers direct to the opposition and hoofball. Truly awful.

Udders were better the second half, as were we ironically when the players who should have started the game came on. Bowler. Lyons. Rogers.

He is a good shot stopper but doesn't command his area. Grimshaw is a good shot stopper who does command his area more IMO
Not much between Maxwell and Grimshaw as shot stoppers. Maxwell more vocal whilst Grimshaw is slightly better on high balls and distribution but significantly better as a 'sweeper'. That long ball over the top last night that Maxie didn't come for and their guy ran onto nearly cost us a goal but for Nelson getting across - Grimshaw would have dealt with easily.

Time to bring Grimshaw back.

Grimshaw is the better keeper, better distribution and commands his area much better. There's balls going in the box that he should be dealing with and he either doesn't come out or comes halfway and changes his mind.

Connelly decided to sequence jump with Madine rather than watch the ball, if he had he would of easily cleared it.
