Blackpool v Leyton Orient Official Matchday Thread 19.08.23

We want to play Possession football!… 48 vs 52% what a prick!
Possession football? We give up at the first sign of a team pressing us and resort gladly to hoofball.

If we are wanting and trying to play it, it's a failure of either tactics or players nowhere near good enough to play it, which I don't see as the case, as we know what can be done with the right encouragement, messaging etc.

We are good enough to play that way and if we stuck with it we'd improve, but we seem to take the easy option and go long far too often.

If the players aren't doing what Critchley is telling them then he needs to sort it, but has anyone seen him shouting at them when the keep going long or does he look happy?

We should be well drilled in playing out, you mix it up occasionally yes, draw them out and at time pop one over the top, but generally you should be able to pass out and around teams, keep the ball, even if it at times is a little boring, the more you keep the ball the better chance we have of them not scoring and us completely dominating. If they have less of it they tend to be a bit more panicked when on it and take more time to settle with less touches.

Eventually our dominance would pay off in games as we advance up the pitch if were being that good on the ball.

No, I'm not seeing possession based football at all.

Look at the squad and who comes in to improve that starting 11 ?
No alternatives upfront, no left back other than Thompson, the creative players in the middle of the park are non creative.
Five at the back should mean your full backs bombing forward and getting behind them.
On the evidence of the last three league games, we are a million miles off a promotion push. Quality needed and fast, stop having " productive meetings " and make some productive signings.

I am convinced that Critchley is sacrificing everything to the formation. When he replaces someone it's always like for like. Nearly every one of those players (can't speak for Weir), is better than they're playing and that includes Marvin.

First half there was no midfield. Why?! Andy Lyons can be great but he's being left to do nothing, standing around on the left wing. CJ holding back?....that must be under instruction. Again, why?

4-3-**-3. That way we entice the opposition out - Orient wanted to be expansive - and play through them.

I was watching Richie Wellens. He gets involved, I like it. Give him a good team and I think he could make waves in this league.

Are you listening Mr Critchley?

“First half there was no midfield. Why? “ Mainly because we played the long ball over their heads, it was like watching MM’s team! It’ll come good just give him time and one or two quality signings or loans.
Dont forget all our quality players from last year have gone back to their clubs, been transferred or are out injured!

The definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Long balls over the top, mostly diagonal and it didn’t work, but we kept on with it. I feel sorry for Shane, he tried everything, but the tactics are all wrong.

I was hoping the manager would have understood by now, what needs doing, but he doesn’t. Unless there’s a significant Change in formation and or personnel, SS has a huge decision to make.

Nah, it's early days, he wanted him back badly, we're not losing games, just look poor.

It certainly needs to improve if we want to get to where we want to be.

But nowhere near any big decisions being made lol.

System isn't working. Marv is always the spare man and he doesn't have a clue what to do with it. It's not getting the most out of Lyons or CJ.

Bench looks very weak and doesn't allow us to change it up. No striker on the bench. If we wanted to go 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 then the only wingers that we have are CJ and Dale.
Thats because we don't have another striker to put on the bench. There is this obsession with buying midfielders, whilst we are crying out for two more strikers and a wide player!

We’ve not won in three, but are still only three points from the top. I’d say we’ve been bloody lucky. We ought to be much further down the table.

Just arrived back in West Cumbria after a 5 hour round trip realising just why I didn't renew my season ticket. Hoofball and scrappy play for most of the ninety minutes.
270 minutes of play without a goal.

They get awarded a penalty and it could have really gone from boring to balls up.

Critchley needs to build on what could be a good platform for success but not with these tactics at home.

We're being too cautious, but the fact is we've sold Yates, sold Bowler, and released Keshi - basically every single bit of our attacking flair and cutting edge, and so far have replaced them with Beesley and Joseph who continues to be out of action.

We have no attacking threat in the squad whatsoever, which is why our only attacking tactic is to hit it long to Beesley.

Critchley has no real options. The board must bring in at least a couple of forwards with some on-the-ball quality otherwise I can't see us scoring anywhere near enough to trouble the top six.

It's early days, yes, but I'll be concerned if we don't do any more transfer business. January will be too late, if we want to give ourselves a chance.

In League games it is 335 minutes since we scored the 2nd against Burton. Fair play on that journey.

The last few transfer windows were diabolical and last season we had eleventh million wingers and no midfielders, this season we have eleventy million midfyand no wingers and no strikers, for me the recruiting has been all to cock, why are we so hopeless at getting a balanced squad?

It's been poor the last few games, but we can look on our chances too. If Virtue sticks that away vs Exeter, if Lavery put that one at the end in...

If's work both ways.

But it should hardly have been deserved but sometimes wins aren't deserves just teams are clinical.

Either way we weren't.

I’d say the likes of Norburn are so far, the epitomy of the word ‘balanced’.

Also, the transfer window hasn’t closed. Let’s see if we can get something out of it before it does.

Congratulations on your foresight.

But still patronising Critchley's garbage?

It resembles a diner complaining about the poor food - and the small portions.

It’s times like these I remember I pay to watch

Probably the most flair starved squad in the whole league

Sadler if you’re reading just force Critch to sign a few tricky lads and we’ll be quiet
