Blackpool v Luton Town Official Matchday Thread 04.12.21

It will be important to do at least a couple of signings in January, if we can get a midfielder half as good at Charlie Adam that would do.

Oh wind it in won't ya ya whinging Ginge. Its been a shocker right across the team today. Shocking weather, and a shocking result. We need to steady the ship over the next game or so. Not at the races today and the bigger, stronger, better team on the day wanted it more and deserved to get it. Sometimes that's just how it goes
Fair enough, but Mitchell has never been at the races.....
I genuinely do not see a championship level player there.
On the other hand I see Sonny Carey, who just gets odd minutes here and there as a real player. It's all about opinions.
I'll wager Mitchell does not start v Derby.

Another bad day at the office. If we had scored the first today we would probably have won one nil. As soon as we concede it’s now game over every match. Critch needs a new plan for when we concede and go a goal down.

Piss poor result this.
Wintle shot, great save from their keeper.
Mitchell's deflected shot goes in instead of hitting the post then it's a different game.
Those are the fine lines in this division.
Blackpool MUST take 4 points from the next 2 matches or we will be seriously looking over our shoulders.
Scoring goals is a major concern but the help they are given gives me more of a concern.

I can't see us getting anything at Derby

I think of next 6 games, 4 are against bottom 6. We need to get a decent number of points from those games.

We are on target for staying up which is No1 priority this season. We have more than half the points needed and not yet at the halfway point of the season. All is well. UTMP 🍊
All is far from well. 3 points from 18 and a team that can't score goals and concedes soft goals is a major worry going forward.

We were always going to hit sticky patches as we made the step up to the championship, this league is unforgiving at times. Still in a healthy position coming up to the half way point of the season. Onward and upward. UTMP 🍊
Agreed we are near to where I expected us to be be .Like others got giddy with run of good form and league position . Not going to be too downcast about today .
We were fkn shit in the second half and six games without a win us not good .Tbf their goalie made great save from Wintle.
Back home and still thawing out .
Credit to Luton they came and did a job on us

The other teams have sussed us out. We are too easy to contain, don’t score goals and let soft ones in. Some changes in tactics and players needed in January, Critchley doesn’t seem to know how to respond when things aren’t going for us during the game. He waits too long , then usually makes the same changes, we need some fresh ideas. That isn’t the criticism of Critchley that it sounds, he needs a strong assistant who can put his ideas across, not another yes man.

11 points ahead of Peterborough who finished last season 7 points ahead of us, 5 points ahead of Hull who finished 9 points ahead last year, considering we finished 3rd that should put things into some perspective.
Last season has been and gone, I don’t give a monkey’s where any other teams are in the league or where they finish. I’m concerned with us and where we finish this season not what happened last.

It is a relevant comparison of where we are at and what a step up the championship is. In being so far ahead of those two would suggest we are doing well.

It feels like we've slipped back in the last couple of games to where we were in August against Cardiff and Coventry, losing games we 'could have won' to teams that are more robust and clinical when it matters.

Fine margins. Three good chances first half but their goalie played a blinder in difficult conditions. All teams go thro a bad patch. This is ours. Keep the faith.

So if , for arguments sake Hull finished bottom, Peterborough next to bottom and us third but 12 points in front of the other 2 you would consider that success?

Their goalie played a blinder, as you say, and ours who some couldn’t wait to get back had a stinker.

Its true that we had been going better than expected before hitting this poor run in the last six games but in the first 4 of those 6 we lost one 1-0 and drew the other 3.In our last 2 games we have lost to a very poor Birmingham City and then a bad 3-0 home defeat to a team that was below us, a worrying trend. We were very short of goals but our defence which had been our strong point let 3 in today another worrying trend.

All this at the time when our manager has just been given a much longer and improved contract ,slightly concerning for our owner perhaps.

Agreed with all his substitutions, but we are too lightweight and no one apart from Luton were surprised when they scored the first which was against the run of play. We probably won the game on all stats bar the scoreline, but we only created half chances and do not possess a killer instinct

The passing and crosses in the final third were woeful today. Maxwell had a nightmare and I cant see why Gabriel isn't in the starting line up. Also the match ups at set pieces seem wrong re the first goal especially. Im happy with our league position but the form at home is a major worry.

Is Owen Dale a naturally wide player then? Id never really heard of him before he came here but going off his highlights he does most damage in and around the edge of the 18 yard box for anything dropping out.He did admittedly look very good on the left side when he came on at Reading to be fair just be interested to know if he could be better used. Hes definitely good enough for this division in terms of ability.

Mitchell didnt have his best game but I still have him ahead of CJ and Bowler at the moment.

One of them today,im just going to blame the conditions and move onto the next one.We didnt look ourselves though and naive perhaps I do think the conditions played their part towards that.

Last season is irrelevant. What is relevant is that we've taken 3 points from the last 18, scored just 2 goals and slipped to 15th. Critchley and his squad need to get a grip and fast.

It can’t be against the run of play every game. Two goals in six games is pathetic in any league.

Ginge, your love for Bowler is obvious and today Mitchell had a poor one. However, on here you were straight on praising Bowler’s first run, but there is no balance in your posts. After that first run he reverted to type, no end product. Easy pass inside the box to overlapping player knocked out of play, poor shot, hitting a defender with every cross. I get excited when he gets the ball, but it’s like a cheap firework, all flash and no bang. I’d love him to do better, but he’s so frustrating.

So right Hazi... But we are footy fans and know how it goes. Win a few games and we're certain for promotion..... Lose a couple of games and the players ain't good enough and the manager has to go... And yes I'm the worst on a Saturday when I come home after a defeat and have had a few drinks. But you do get upset when you have followed the team for 50+ years supported the boycott and get excited about what you have seen over the last few years. On reflection it's fabulous to be upsett and cheesed off about being beat in the Championship, rather than putting up with a 1-0 win in league 2. UTMP.

Spot on. Frustrating player - why he never made it at Everton - just flatters to decieve.Hopefully being coached by NC will improve his obvious flaws as he has a great deal of talent.

Agree with majority of that S1, I get upset pal believe me! It’s the knee jerk doom mongers who can’t see the wood for the trees that get on my moobs.

Midfield provide the service to the forwards and there's been no real incisive passing really all season. I usually stick up for Dougal, not sure about Wintle ... but they both seem off the pace. And do Barnsley and Cardiff really let good players go? Grimshaw has been great - did CM deserve an immediate recall? Agree - weird to drop Gabriel. Mitchell - you've gotta be kidding - never impresses (just like Hanmilton) waste of time. Jerry, Lavery and Keshi decent players. And suddenly lady luck has moved somewhere else and our smash and grab tactics look like cup giant killers, not the genuine article. But lower mid table this year will be a great outcome. UTP.

Not a great performance but not as bad as the bed wetters would suggest.
A goal in the first half when we were in the ascendency, or even at 2-0 when we had a few half chances and it would have been a different game.
Plenty to more to come from this talented bunch of players.

chances are 40 points may do it this year. Derby are tracking towards about 27-28 points, Barnsley similar. Peterborough about 35 pts. Of course they could all have a massive improvement in form.

If we had scored in the first half of any of the last 6 games, they would have been different games .But the reality is we didn't, we have a big problem.
I know we were denied a perfectly good goal against QPR by the way.

Lavery's early season goals spared our blushes. The likes of Mitchell, Bowler, Dale and our midfield will be lucky to score 6 between them in a season. It might also be a step up too far for Yates, although the service to him is awful. Unfortunately, Critchley is a defensive coach so I expect more of the same at Derby.

On today's showing no one should think their place is safe. Maxwell will have to up his game considerably, Gabriel, Keogh to come back in. Keshi back to the left hand side of a 4, Bowler or CJ on the right and Madine, Lavery up top in a 442.
The 442 is one of the reasons we are struggling so badly, particularly at home.

We have no answer to teams playing a 532 (or variant thereof), especially when playing with inverted wide players and being over-run in central midfield.

Guess the poster.
Last time we won the match thread had 10 pages and 2 posts by one particular poster.
Today we played badly and the match thread is dominated by one poster with close on 20 posts.
Who could this be??

I can't get over why we only played one striker at home to Luton. Why was Critch so scared of them? Does Critch expect our non strikers to score the goals?
Maybe he thinks we haven't got the players capable of winning matches anymore and has now turned to the Sheffield Utd away smash and grab tactics even for home matches. I hope that's not the case.

UTMP!
