Blackpool v Plymouth Argyle Official Matchday Thread 27.03.21

I don't think he's as good as many think, like I said, Stewart is a far better defensive midfielder.

I would change it with Gretarrson on and Turton going to right back, Gabriel as right midfield, take off Dougall so Embleton and Ward can do the central midfield and take off Kaikai who isn't in the game today and put Simms on to play alongside Yates.
I prefer Dougall to Stewart personally, but he had a torrid first half and I'd agree with taking him off.

I'm not accepting all this they're tired crap, these lads are athletes. Plymouth are just playing far better than is at the moment. Let's see what the second half brings.

The main problem is Embleton, it’s a key position in this formation and he’s non-existent. Just keep seeing him jogging in / out of shot. Because he’s not showing, Jerry has no support and we’re also easy to play through.

May as well go 442, unless Robson on with Ward forward in 451

We can only get better. Get 1 and we’ll get 3.

Outplayed for most of that half. We get the ball, it goes slowly across the back, and back again.
Plymouth get the ball and their intention is to get it into our PA and attack it.
We could easily lose this one, unless changes are made.

If Gretarrson is fit he needs to replace Thorniley as he's being torn apart for pace. Kai Kai needs to up his game similar to Burton as he's been pretty woeful today, weak on the ball and generally seems uninterested. Mitchell has been terrible too, can't control the ball and makes the wrong decision time after time. He's never in position to support Gabriel and doesn't seem to be tracking back either which for a player who can also play as a defender just isn't good enough. Dougall and Embleton look completely knackered too.

Gretarsson in at LCB, Ward on the right, Mitchell switched with Robson to beef up the midfield and Embleton switched with Simms so we can play a more direct 442. Is what i'd do. Lets hope we see a Critch masterclass here though.

Bloody hell, I'm stunned someone has taken offence to that.

We've all been saying Dougall was clearly suffering from long covid as he was no way near the level we've seen from him, he's recently picked back up to his usual standard but today he looks like he's reverted.
I'm not sure he has, because they wouldn't have played him if he wasn't fit and long Covid would mean he wouldn't be physically able to play. I just think he isn't as good as some were making him out to be. He stated off well, but went off before he had Covid.

Finally get into a playoff position they produce that shite.

How many times was the first touch a bad one and the ball still bouncing around, we have no clue but to pass backwards. Throw in in forward position, go backwards. Beat a player to create an opening, go backwards.

Pass it across the back and kick it forward to nobody.

Absolutely shite, can't go up if you have these performances in the locker.

No excuse today, fatigue or not you shouldn't be playing this badly.

Rubs it in that we have missed strikers with quality all season yet Hardy not given a chance shows he can score. Very bizarre decision. Outside of madine and Yates who did we have at the time?

Woeful so far, if this lot think they are good enough to be up there and challenge they better start showing it second half, as that was ridiculously bad. All the hard work done against 2 good sides to get 2 wins in danger of being somewhat undone.

👎

We look tired
We're 2nd to every ball
They're winning every loose ball (and there are a lot) and getting joy out of the ball in our LB position.
442 please Critch, because as The Stranglers said, something better change

Long hard first half that, we need a substantial improve net in the second half . What the answer is I don’t know !

Dougall and Thorniley won't get a game next season, both awful. Need to get Robson and/or Antwi on.

Absolute nonsense and completely reactionary, especially concerning Dougall. At times he has been the best player on the park this season and has clearly found it difficult to get back into the rhythm of it after his layoff. Plus, as you've shown on this board, 90% of your opinions and predictions re: players are complete garbage.

The guy had COVID this year and this is his fourth game in eleven days. Not having the best time of it currently, but to write him off for this season AND next is crackers.

I'm not sure he has, because they wouldn't have played him if he wasn't fit and long Covid would mean he wouldn't be physically able to play. I just think he isn't as good as some were making him out to be. He stated off well, but went off before he had Covid.
Just something that portions of the fan base have been musing over, maybe "long covid" is an over the top term but he just looked a yard behind his usual self and that could be a result of a small amount of fatigue from having covid. Obviously if he was suffering from severe post-covid symptoms he'd no way near the squad.

Fair enough if you don't rate him, I personally think he's a class act on his day but he's having a bad day at the office today.

would consider taking emleton off, bring on robson in the middle, ward out to the right mitchell on the left and move kaikai into the middle as a second striker

we could have been 3 down to be honest but its still only 1-0 so everything to play for

No reason we can't come out and have a blinder of a 2nd half and win this.

Need to come out with an absolute rocket up our arse, a Burton-esque 2nd half. COME ON POOL!

I prefer Dougall to Stewart personally, but he had a torrid first half and I'd agree with taking him off.
I can't agree with that. Stewart breaks up play and finds players with ease, if you watched the games he played in he was the outlet all the time and he did it really well. I also didn't think playing Stewart and Dougall together worked at all.

Bloody hell, I'm stunned someone has taken offence to that.

Ok I'll bite.
I'll tell you now if Dougall had long covid he wouldn't even be able to put his kit on.
Let me know when someone you know has it and I'll make time to have a laugh about it.

Awful half.

Against stronger opposition we play on the edge 100%. All those recent home daws against mid and lower table teams were not too similar to today. We've stopped running, Yates isn't dropping, he's at least a yard too slow as are the supporting players from deep. Embleton looks well short of energy. Garbutts got to be more consistent with dead balls, he won't get a better position than that fee kick. Kaikai from that well worked corner has to put his foot through it, what a tame effort that was.

Yes to lots of posters' ideas: 442, Gretarsson for Thorniley, Robson for Dougall, Simms for Embleton. Ward to range forward whenever possible.

I was surprised to see an unchanged side. I can see Ellis Simms making an impact if introduced. Gaffer needs to work out how to get the ball into areas where we can hurt them.. so far we’ve not looked even close to hurting them.

Agreed
He has to be fair, he's been bench warming for Plymouth this season and had only scored 4 goals I believe. When I saw him starting you just knew he was gonna have a blinder and score! Bloody typical
Agreed I wasn't too fussed when he went. But he's given our defence a torrid time. Shows how vital Ballard is to the team

Silly question that has probably been asked before, but why do we have a metal fence only 2 metres from the touch line?

Hope your right but atm not looking likely, at least 2 goals needed and with pushing maybe need 3. We have struggle to score and today have looked toothless.

2nd half will show us if we really have playoff credentials.

So will be very interesting really lets see what we are actually made of.

As good as we was tue we are poor today need players to up their game in next 10 to 15 mins or make changes , plymouth are playing us and getting to the ball a lot better than we are

I can't agree with that. Stewart breaks up play and finds players with ease, if you watched the games he played in he was the outlet all the time and he did it really well. I also didn't think playing Stewart and Dougall together worked at all.
I'd agree we should never pair Dougall and Stewart, I'll also agree to the fact that he breaks play up well. As for finding players with ease, I'd disagree with that in the regard of going forward - he is a very negative player (I don't mean that in a disrespectful way), his passes are often sideways and backwards.

When we've been crying out for more attacking player in the midfield I don't think he is the answer, I think he can work contextually within a squad and he could fit within this new system - just not alongside Dougall as having two negative minded players is obviously great defensively, but not going forward.
