Blackpool v Port Vale Official Matchnight Thread 15.08.23

Looking forward to my first evening game this season. Wonder what time it will finish? Weather forecast for tomorrow looks good. Glad it wasn’t today! Hope the players can re-energise after the long weekend trip. I’m sure we will see some squad rotation, though expect Lavery and Beesley to start. Will Weir feature? Connelly back in?

Four points from the next two home games would keep the good start to the season vibe going. Would prefer six which is doable, but we are still a bit short up front.
🤞

Neil Critchley provides squad update- and discusses when Jensen Weir could make his debut

Neil Critchley is hopeful he can welcome two players back to the Blackpool matchday squad for the game against Port Vale.

The Seasiders take on Andy Crosby’s side at Bloomfield Road on Tuesday night, in their third outing of the new League One season.
For Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Exeter City, the Tangerines were without both Matthew Pennington and Callum Connolly in defence.
"We’re hopeful Matty will be available (for Port Vale),” Critchley said.
"He trained yesterday so hopefully he’ll be in contention for the squad.
"Callum’s partner gave birth to a baby girl on Saturday, so congratulations to them.
"He’s had quite a hectic 72 hours, but was in with us yesterday and did a little bit of work.
"We’ll see how he is, but physically, he’s not injured- he’s fine.
"His partner has had more of a hectic time than him.”
Critchley also provided an update on Kyle Joseph, who was absent as well for the game at St James Park.
"He’ll get assessed today,” he added.
"We gave him the weekend to let his injury settle down.
"Sometimes you need 48 hours to see.
"We’ll assess today and then make a decision on where we go.
"I believe everyone else is okay- there’s a few tired bodies aching but nothing serious.”
New signing Jensen Weir could also be in contention for his debut in the next few games after joining the Seasiders from Brighton & Hove Albion on a season-long loan.
"We’re in the process of getting all the information that we need on him to formulate a plan for him,” Critchley stated.
"We obviously want him included as quickly as possible but we also need to understand he’s not been with us for six weeks in pre-season.
"Until we get all that information off Brighton, we need to know how many training sessions he’s done, the type of intensity it’s been, and the game time he’s had.
"There’s also the learning process of being in a new team- and that will happen in the next few days and weeks.
"We have a way of playing in and out of possession that can take some time to get used to.
"There’s new information and we ask different things of the players.
"We like to have a process where they are constantly learning and evolving against different opposition and styles.
"We see Jensen who can provide goals and assists for us from midfielder. He’s a good footballer who can control games.
"He’s good at running forward, getting into the box- he’s a good finisher.
"He can also link the game as well and connect the play, so we think he can add both sides to our midfield.”
Critchley admits further work could be done in the transfer market by Blackpool.
“There’s obvious places on the pitch where we’re still short,” he explained.
"We are doing work every day to try and bring those players into the club.
"We only want people who will improve the squad- which isn’t easy.
"We’ve still got a little bit to do.”

Trouble is we’re going expecting and expected to win - and we all know how that usually ends up! Vale no pushovers and they have some decent strikers who shoot on sight and often score from outside the box - including Ben Garitty. Their support will be loud - unless we do a Barnsley to keep them quiet. UTMP!

So it looks like the goal impetus that we need is not going to be coming in the short term from Weir/Joseph….we will have to make do with what we have and grind some results out…

I know we're a bunch of impatient buggers but how reassuring is it to hear we're doing the right things these days.

mates a Vale fan, says that once Any Carroll missed the pen after 12 minutes, Vale bossed Reading and he’s feeling confident about tomorrow night.

Good job we're not playing tonight. Let's just say no need to turn the sprinklers on at the moment...

I've no doubt we'll have to earn it and Vale will be considerably higher in confidence than a week ago, but I'd like to think we'll provide them with a somewhat sterner test than Reading did and I do not expect them to boss it against us, regardless of how the result works out.

I'm going 3-1 Blackpool.

Will be there tomorrow . Sons birthday . lads and dads twenty five years or maybe longer . my memory is fading. fancy us tomorrow / 2.0

Can’t beat a night match, I particularly like ones in August and April when it’s still light for a bit of it. Shame I can’t be there - come on the pool.

I don't like midweek evening matches, pain in the arse for me and we seem to lose most of them, but I hope everyone else enjoys it!

To me, it’s all about who gets the first goal

We score first and we will probably win — another clean sheet would be welcome but we also need goals

Get behind the Team from the off as their fans will

Oh, and I think, reading a few reports on their first 2 matches, they were Klicks to beat Reading and 7—1 flattered Barnsley on day 1 (took every chance and many break away goals)

The win against Reading though will have settled them and they are probably playing 3 of the better teams in League 1 first up

That exactly my thoughts

Yep, gotta take our chances - so important.
Look at Wolves last night - far and away the better side, didn't capitalise on it, and lost 1-0 to Utd.

To me getting a win is all about scoring more goals than the opposition and if they get none then one's enough. Of course if they do score then two goals are going to be needed, which is twice as hard as one goal and that's a huge percentage increase in the ask.

I think that sums it up nicely. I could be the new @Graves

Give this man a job!

When people are buying their match pass what are people putting as their address?

Their UK address?

Probs being over para but just wanted to ask

That's a great number for a mid-week game.

Self belief. I can do it. I can do it. I can do it, I can do it, I can really move from my head right down to my blue suede shoes. Isn't it? Rubettes, 1973 ? Marvellous.

Sure the Boss knows best and coaching staff have researched Vale's strengths and weaknesses, but would have liked a bolder statement of intent by starting two up front, at home, so early in the season
