Blackpool v Portsmouth Official MatchNight Thread 01.12.20

I just dont see us moving the ball fast enough and without Garbutt we lose a lot of the set piece threat. Kai Kai needs to put a shift in here as there is no room for passengers. I like Keshi but he needs to start having an impact in the league matches. I hope Husband and Turton can cope but I still genuinely dont understand why we dont try 3 at the back for a game and play the wing backs...hopefully one day we will and it will work a treat ...I really hope this gamble pays off for the manager and I will be the first to acknowledge it if it does but I do have reservations against a strong Pompey side.

I can't. It's a really poor selection for me. Hopefully we win but the way Turton and Husband played last week should have meant they are lucky to get on the bench.
Don't get me wrong, I think Gabriel has now shown enough to warrant a place in the side, but I can understand Critch's decision to go with Turton even if I don't agree with it.
I said on Saturday I don’t want to see Husband anywhere near the first team ever again, sadly it would appear Critch disagrees with me about this too 😂

Re Madine, I can only imagine he is either carrying a knock or absolutely knackered. Of late he would be one of the first names on my team sheet, and I will hold my hands up and admit I was one of the ones who wrote him off at the start of the season. I'm more than happy he has proved me wrong.

I can't say I'm overly confident about tonight.

It's a defensive line-up but I'm not sure Robson deserves to get in after Doncaster. Ward must wonder what he has to do to keep his place. I can understand Anderson staying in and presumably Critchley thinks passing and pace are more useful than a target man. Will be interesting to see which of Kaikai or Anderson are more central - think I'd prefer Kaikai. We seem to be developing two teams depending on quality of the opposition.

Interesting lineup. I think we may have to get used to a few changes like this regularly with the busy schedule over the next few weeks.
I'm not comfortable with the full backs or the central striker role but those have been positions we've struggled with all season, and I suspect will be until at least January and possibly next summer.

We need to play to our strengths, and that might mean sitting back and hitting them on the counter with Hamiltons pace.

Think Critchley just likes rotating the squad but for me I don't like his tinkering. Should be if we win you keep your place, if we lose you won't play the next game. Has us set up 4 3 3 so our midfield will get squeezed by Portsmouth 4 4 2.
Have not seen us play well yet as 4 3 3. Hope he proves me wrong

Hmm, Not what I would have picked, but what I expected. NC seems to like the experience and defensive qualities of Husband and Turton.

I am most shocked at the exclusion of Madine, unless Portsmouth are more likely to struggle against a strike force without a natural centre Forward? Glad Ballard is back in and I think Anderson did enough to get a place after Saturday. I think Ward is unlucky so Robson needs to step up tonight. In fact the pressure is on a number of players to try and hold onto the shirt.

NC & CC see them in training every day and will have analysed the opposition so lets hope they have got it right. So many decent players, they can't all play every game.

I've been one of Ward's harshest critics but he has definitely been improving of late, dropping him entirely seems a little harsh. Surely it must be injury related.

Looks like I might be one of the few on this thread that quite likes this. 4-2-3-1, Keshi tucked in behind Yates. Ward dropped presumably because he wants his two in DM more defensively capable.

We don't have the big man up top but we do need another option about us. We have nine games in December, too, so need to be able to start rotating well.

Of course, if we get hammered I'll eat my words!

I like his selections and think this is a decent team against Pompey.
They like to get crosses into the box from wide positions Sullay and CJ might neutralize that.
UP THE POOL !!!

Critchley's put his neck on the block with that selection. Lack of trust in Gabriel and Garbutt defensively? Also, no Madine with Yates! Just hope it works out.

Yates has looked twice the player alongside Madine. I just hope the fact he's now got a few on the board will give him that extra confidence.

I get that Madine will need to be rested at points, but why not do that on Saturday instead of today. I just hope Yates isn't isolated again and we take a step back.

If this is a 442 we have a chance if for some bizarre reason we’ve changed back to 443 I think we know the result now.

It can work but the players have to realise Yates is not Madine. Start knocking balls up to him in the air and their centre halves will be all over him. He's just not got the physical attributes of Madine. Get the balls into his feet or knocking it into the channels and then he has a chance.

Maybe this is another attempt at trying to force these players in to a 433.
Because u21/non league opposition aside, how much success have we had with it?

Going to be a tough game this one. After last Tuesdays 2nd half meltdown it appears we either win or lose games so we need to start turning all these narrow defeats into draws if that makes sense.

I’d be happy with a draw and impressed with a win tonight.
Don't think we do, i know what you mean if we are winning a lot then the odd draw fine, but in the past a lot of draws have killed us.
