It's not the FA cup game where we played 3 times to settle the tie. That was in 1990.Its the FA Cup game 0-0 i think got beat 5-1 in the replay on the plastic pitch
Did you smoke some of it behind the bike sheds at playtime?Three things I remember from that game. It was my first proper season going, and so that was the biggest crowd I'd been in at the time. I was loving it, turned to my dad who'd not been regularly for years - brilliant this isn't it. Dad smiled patiently - this wasn't even a reserve gate 20 years ago. OK sorry dad.
QPR had a shot from the kick off! No idea who, but one tapped to another who blasted from the halfway line just to see if Iain Hesford was awake. Missed by about 10-15 yards.
And next morning at school after the replay, someone wrote on the blackboard - at least we've got grass.
The replay was 5-1, I think Clive Allen scored 4, I was in the Navy based in Portsmouth and made the trip by train, big mistake during a rail strike as my train back to Pompey was cancelled and it cost me £75 in a taxi to get back, a fair amount 40 years ago for a young sailorFA Cup 4th Round. I was in the South Stand just above the tunnel. I remember watching it the day after and seeing myself .
I hadn't seen it again in 40 yrs until a few weeks ago when ITV 4 showed it.
That was the year of massive snow in early December and there was a big fixture pile up, I think we only beat Barnsley away in Round 3 on the Monday night before it, then got beat in the Replay at Loftus Rd on the plastic pitch 5-0 on the Wednesday. That pretty much ended our season, no play offs in those days and our first season in Division 4, with crowds under 2,000. Started well, unbeaten in the first 10 games including 5-0 and 7-1 home wins against Crewe and Halifax.
You are right, about Rotherham but that was the season before under Alan Ball . Early 81/2 we were getting good crowds, anything from 4,500-5 or 6k, even a 7k against Bury but they went seriously down hill after Xmas. There was a few big crowds late on against Wigan and Sheff Utd but they brought thousands, and had way more fans there than we did.PMG, yes but the crowds were good early in the year. I'm sure we got 10k for an early league game, maybe Rotherham?
Hadn't realised they dropped off so much in that first year.
