Blackpool v Reading Official Matchday Thread 30.07.22

Yes, I’ll take that, looked good in patches but like last season a very nervous 1-0 watch, I reckon a good start is imperative this season

Aged five years in that second half. Made heavy work of that after JB hit the post.

Good front-foot football at the start before they faded and tiredness crept in, a refreshing watch. Didn't expect Fiorini to be playing midfield pivot. Nice range of passing but needs some wing mirrors for that role.

Hopefully Dom Thompson going off was just fatigue as he looked like a rock solid full back on first show, exactly what you need in a 4-3-3.

Could be a huge three points that over the course of the season. Callum Connolly is the man 👍

Interesting that we made five subs and Reading could only manage one, they've got a very thin squad and I think it's going to be a long season for them.

It's all about results and 3 points will do very nicely. Tired legs and they will have to prove but defended brilliantly. I thought Williams, Thompson and Fiorini all had excellent debuts and Connolly was MOM for me. I thought Yates, Madine and Bowler were a good trio but I'm not sure about Virtue, that has to be Connolly's position unless we are bringing someone in.

I wonder if Anderson is on his way, I know they said injured but Huddersfield were sniffing around. 2 or 3 more decent signings and we'll have a decent Championship side.

Well done lads, that was a battling performance

I wasn't at the match, but it looks like we are going to have problems scoring again.
On another day we could have easily had 3 or 4 goals based on the chances we had and then we’d all be raving about the performance instead how we just scraped through today. But you’re right, goals win games and not every game will be won by us only scoring once

Get in.

Thought we looked good in patches and started well, while a little nervy in the second half. A little worried about midfield, though Gabriel coming back will allow Connolly to move up and hopefully we bring another in next week.

We've got to keep hold of Bowler. We don't have the means to replace him with someone of his quality IMO - yes, the end product needs work at times, but on another day he bags that chance that hit the post and Corbeanu scores the one he put across. Ran them ragged too.

Very meh performance, looked very dangerous at times in the first half, but never really got into our stride in the second.

Think that has a lot to do with the fact that the team haven't fully gel'd yet and the fact that Reading were more than happy to put 8 men behind the ball when we went forward in attack.

Can see what Appy is trying to do and am optimistic that with a few mores games under their belts we'll be putting better performances together than today.

Was worrying that 50' onward we just let Reading dominate the ball, because they could have punished us.

3 points is 3 points though and now we've got another week to adds bodies, continue to gel and improve. 🍊

Thompson was brilliant, don't think Garbutt will start again so long as he's here.

I thought Reading played okay but no end product, we had by far the better chances and I'd take a clean sheet every game for the other side.

Bowler signing a new contract would be the best signing of all and I thought Yates looked excellent on the left

I think it was good to get the win and the first half performance was great. However, continue to tire so quickly in the 2nd half and show the opposition that much of the ball and better teams will really punish us I fear. The defence looked really solid today but Reading are shite.

we hit the post once, Lumley had a couple of saves to make, Madine should have put a header away, couple of other chances went begging. we got into enough good positions to score. we should have probably put the game to bed in the first twenty five mins. the final ball was often a bit off.

defensively we were a bit slapdash in possession. The recovery pace of Thompson, Marv and Williams probably saved us a few times today.

Second half we werent making the runs from midfield, and the full backs were pressed back. Jerry probably did more work around our penalty area than he did around the opposing one.

im going to be the first one this season absolutely shit officiating again the whole game. David webb is always is always a useless **. and the liner running the west was absolutely hopeless

Listening to Radio Berkshire, they said Reading only had one sub who they could see coming on in Shane Long, who duly did.

They had Joao injured today and have bought a loanee in from Porto who can come in next week.

But if they are trying to run a Championship squad on 14 players, there’s no way they will stay up as games come quicker and injuries mount. They will become a banker win for most teams.

A very good win imo. All the friendlies were set up by Critchley and albeit they were high value, it's not how Appleton would have done it, he learned nothing about the team in terms of having possession. Today was his ' dress rehearsal ' and he brought home 3 points against a Reading side that will be a lower end championship side. First half was dynamite and second half , albeit not so pretty, we defended well and got the win. It's been a tough close season with loads on here spitting their dummies out, time to draw a line underneath all that bollocks and support the owner, the CEO, the manager and the team !

By the way, time to get rid of CJ. It's the first negative comment that I've posted on here since last season ! UTMP !!

Decent in the 1st half, ordinary in the 2nd.

Good to get a win but rather concerning how little we had of the ball in the 2nd half after Bowler hit the post.

That was a professional performance by the whole team , we had the better chances and fought well. In my honest opinion , I’m very happy with the way we tried to play. That midfield was rather young and inexperienced, however, they gave an admirable performance and will only get better as they develop an understanding, and the same goes for the rest of the team . Well done Pool .
