Blackpool v Rotherham Official Matchday Thread 11.02.23

On Tuesday the defence and midfield looked more organised and solid than it had done all season. The midfield didn’t get overrun (although struggled a bit more when down to 10 naturally) and that bodes well going forward.

Hopefully Lyons and Bowler have proven themselves to MM and get the start - that being said it’s important to remember JB hasn’t played much football and probably lacks match fitness and Lyons hasn’t played at this level before so neither may have 90 mins in them - same goes for Poveda and Rogers so if any of them are on the bench I wouldn’t be too suprised.

I just hope we keep 11 on the pitch and actually see a game plan come to fruition. I honestly believe that on Tuesday the plan was to become more attacking in the second half after grinding down a smaller squad in the first 45-60 minutes. BUT Rotherham are a more physical team than Huddersfield so I can’t see the same game plan in use even if Madine and Goode had been available.

Whatever the plan was for the first half Tuesday, it didn’t bloody work. I hope MM has realised if our defence had been at Rourkes Drift it would have been a completely different outcome. Put our best 11 out and let them worry about us, we are fine going forward. But can’t defend for toffee.

Rotherham have score 3rd highest number of goals at home but have worst goals scores away from home 9 !! I think they will be happy to stop us winning

The standard of the football served up on Tuesday night for the bulk of the game was nothing short of appalling. Gary Goals being suspended now and Goode being injured may turn out to be a blessing in disguise, we’re missing two giants so hopefully Mick will see the light and realise we’re a far better side when the ball’s on the deck. If he plays Kenny and Trybull again in front of a back 4 surely we can accommodate a bit more flair? Poveda starting behind Jerry and Josh and Rogers either side would be nice. Pool win 2-1 🙏🏻

Just purchased three tickets. Don’t know why as expecting another defeat. It’s a bad drug I can’t shake off.

Said before the Udders game we simply had to get 6 points from these next 2 games otherwise we’ve had it.

Obviously the way things went Tuesday night I thought one point was like a morale victory in the end but this game is simply 3 points for me or it’s curtains for sure as I just can’t see this team getting enough wins we need in the remaining games.

A loss tomorrow and Suddenly Rotherham are 8 points clear of us so another one would be out of the rat race for me.

100% nailed on we have to win tomorrow or it’s surely curtains - we can’t keep relying on poor form by Wigan / Cardiff/ Uddersfield to keep us “alive”. Need to keep as many teams as possible in the mire (Stoke & Rotherham for example).

Hoping MM gets the tactics right & we take the game to Rotherham. With a perceived lack of height in the team we have to keep the ball in their half as much as possible tomorrow.

Not expecting great things from this game. Important to win but not confident enough in mad Mick to get the team right. Hope to be pleasantly surprised. Low scoring draw or 1-0 either way. A 1-0 home win would be most acceptable.

Yes it's a must win game. A draw or defeat & we're down. 12 without a win & not beaten them since 1997 so now is a great time to end these awful runs. The 2nd half performance on Tuesday gives me hope. Lyons, Rodgers & Bowler must all start.

I think we can tell based on macarthys pre match interview that he's gonna just play the tallest, hardest blokes again and totally neglect our pacy attacking "flair" players. For fucksake. It's gonna be lavery and CJ on the wings you just know it.

Puzzling isn't it? I honestly don't know if Mick is right or not. My first attendance since mid-December (shirty virus), so I guess I'll see for myself.

A lot depends on MM and his selection, obviously, think Rotherham would be happy with a draw here and it could be even uglier than the Hudders game if we enter a battle of attrition with them.

That being said I have a feeling things will finally come good for us tomorrow, 4-1 pool.

I’ve just had a horrible thought. If we play the team when all (mainly) want to see and we win then Avftt will almost be empty. There’ll be no whining or negative comments.

If we play the team we all want and still lose then tonight will be full of wise sages saying MM tactics etc so it will be alive and kicking!

If Bowler doesn’t start, then the negativity will start before kick off.

Team picks itself today.

Maxwell (Should be Grimshaw)
Lyons-Nelson-Thorniley-Husband
Dougall-Trybull
Bower-Poveda-Rogers (or CJ)
Yates
Think Connolly will be preferred to Thorniley. Mccarthy was bigging him up saying how important it is when players shrug off an injury situation, and the magic sponge is enough to get him up and playing again. Players like Connolly allow players such as Josh to thrive.
I agree with him on this, not the best technically but his attitude lifts him to another level.

I’d like to see
Maxwell
Lyons Connolly Thornley husband
Trybull dougall
Bowler Poveda Yates Rogers
Bench
Grimshaw Nelson thompson cj lavery patino carey
But we Will probably see
Maxwell
Lyons Connolly nelson husband cj
Trybull dougall lavery carey
Yates
Bench
Grimshaw
Thornley patino Rogers Poveda bowler thompson
Hope it’s not the latter

I bet it's closer to the second one than the first!!

Yup that'll be me!!

So, Lyons, Thorniley & Husband in and Bowler too. Sticking with Carey and CJ.

It's a good back 4, defensive midfielders spot on, Carey can be great and I guess Poveda is being his own worst enemy, Yates in the middle and CJ left and I think he deserves to keep the shirt. Much more optimistic now, no cloggers at the back, Nelson dropped, phew!
