Blackpool v Sunderland Official Matchday Thread 01.01.23

Oh well. The familiar crushing inevitability of not being able to hold out and once again finishing a game with ten men.

At least the score didn't totally get away from us as Sunderland looked good for four or five there second half. Better a point than a full kick in the knackers.

They were attacking down the left to exploit Connerly. Clever and a soft yellow. Unlucky as Connerly got booked in the first half when the ref and assistant missed a blatant foul seconds earlier. Awful ref but one of the best we’ve had!

I don’t think that is deliberate. We just aren’t good enough so teams naturally get the upper hand. It doesn’t help with stupid subs like Beesley coming on a right wing.

Really do need a good January window otherwise it’s curtains and Fleetwood Town.
Apart from his involvement in the goal, CJ was shit and rightfully hooked. First player out of the door for me.

As soon as teams realize they can run straight through the middle with Patino and Carey it's game over, and we lose any control of the game.

That is the only positive. We got a point when Sunderland really should have got all three. It’s the same pattern every game. The opponents hammer us for a good 20-30 minute spell and always look like scoring. There is so much to do in a window that is very tough for clubs like ours.

Appleton has to go for me. Why on earth did he wait for them to equalise before making changes? Anyone watching that could see a goal coming 10 minutes before it did. So why did he just let it happen? No attempt to bolster the defence or midfield whatsoever.

If hed made changes to try and rectify the situation but we’d conceeded anyway then i’d say fair enough. The fact he did nothing until it was too late makes me think he’s incompetent.

You would still have him over Beesley. CJ, for all the shit he does, can produce and offers pace that is severely lacking in our team. Did Beesley even get a touch? It’s ** stupid playing him out wide.

Good selection by MA today given the options.

Decent point against a way superior side (second half only).

Only gripe for me is Maxwell.

It is, but why oh why do we always try to defend a 1-0 lead for most of the match
We didn't try to defend the lead.
If you watched the game you'd have seen that whatever Mowbry said to his players at half time worked wonders.
Yet again our midfield was paper thin therefore we were going to be on the backfoot once Sunlan got a foothold in the game.
It could have ended 2-1 to Pool, it could have ended 2-4 to Sunlan!!!
The state that we're in at the moment it was a great point but some will always be looking for the negatives.
We are now into the transfer window and if Sadler is to back Appleton then the next 4 weeks are really shit or bust.

Sunderland were never going to roll over they are in the playoff spots for a reason.
Hull, Sheff Utd and Sunderland gave us a return of 2 points that could quite easily have been 7. Transfers are going to make or break Blackpools season

The one thing that CJ used to have was pace. He no longer has it or does but chooses not to use it . Luxury player that we can ill afford.

Agree with all that.

Simple. I think Grimshaw is the better option. Maxwell's positioning is pretty ropey, and gets caught rooted to the spot.
Do you mean for the goal or just in general? I couldn't see what either could have done to react to Stewart's movement there for the equaliser and how he adjusted himself to make the header.

Sometimes I think you're just going to concede when the attacker gets the better of the situation.

In general.

I was focusing on him.

Good first half. Poveda, Lavery, Patino and Hamilton making good runs and forcing Sunderland into mistakes. So what went wrong in the second half? Certainly, Sunderland stepped up the pace but what else did they do to cause such a large turnaround in fortunes?

Or in Jaffa's case...... Fleetwood Town curtains!! 😉

Sunderland on a great run but couldn't beat us. Yet this board in meltdown. Now up to the board to get some signings in. I thought it a spirited performance.
Spirited performance yes, if we play like that, with the same result until the end of the season, we will be relegated.

Could easily have been 7
