Brothers In Arms

well football;

I know a few who have played professional football at the same time but can’t recall many, who are they?

I’ll start;

The Charlton brothers.

There were the twins in the Hotspur who fooled everyone into thinking they were super athletes by secretly replacing each other at half-time and having storming games.

The idea was later accepted by many League clubs where the players only ever put in one half of a performance but forgot to replace themselves as seen by a few of us during the Worthington years!

Great album, as long as one doesn't have to indulge Walk of Life.

Not professional, but the thread reminded me of my Grandad and his twin brother Harry. Born 1900 they both played for Fleetwood in the early 20s. Grandad was the better player apparently, and was offered a trial with Bolton at the time. Don't know if he turned it down or it wasn't successful, but I suppose had he gone he might have been part of the 1923 Cup winning team.

Some great stories about them. I knew them as old men and while very similar, it was obvious who was who. I've seen photos of them as kids - there was an excellent book made in the 70s or 80s by the reverend at one of PLF's churches (think his name was Mr Wiseman?) who got local folk to send him their pictures and he collated them into a book. They appear in a shot of Poulton CofE from the late 1900s and they were inseparable appearance wise as kids. Caused mayhem at school, the teacher had to sit them apart in the same places every day.

They also played cricket together for Fylde. One time an umpire sent the second one back coming out to bat, told him he was only allowed one go. Another, one was fielding at third man, the other at long off. An opposition player was heard to remark - that poor sod's getting through some running.

I genuinely never knew that about them playing for Fleetwood, always thought they were just cricketers. At least now I know where we get our footballing pedigree from 😀

The registration of John Butler, or the lack of it led to us getting docked a point and having to apply for Re-Election in 1983. The Football League HQ was only in Lytham as well, but we were late getting it in.
Didn't someone in the office steal the stamps and throw away the post?
