Carey's the one player who breaks lines with his off the ball runs atm. Wright has a similar intent but is even less effective without the ball...
I think Carey had improved a lot in terms of his general work. He and Patino have battled hard in a role that is really quite odd for them. I thought they've both put real shifts in without playing especially well of late if that makes sense. I think both of them are shafted by having to do legwork they're not designed for - Patino less so than Carey.
For lack of anyone else, I really would want to see Connolly in the middle to assert a bit of presence and make the odd second of space and time that Patino and Carey could make something from. Dougall is an honest pro, would never slate him, but he's not really enforcer. Connolly is more box to box but he's got presence at least.
I really think a huge thing we're lacking in the 433 is any sort of of overlapping threat from full back.
We seem to be playing so deep it's physically painful and it's that lack of attacking guile at full back that pins us in. I actually still don't mind the idea of three forwards but with Garbutt and Connolly as the full backs I don't get how we can physically make the 433 work effectively. They're about as far from Alexander Arnold and the Scottish left back I forgot as you could imagine.
For all Thommo's faults (and the fact he's almost permanently pulled inside of where he should be defensively is a pretty big fault) he's pretty good at those driving runs from full back that take the pressure off.
It's like shifting deck chairs on the titanic tho until we can get some kind of quality in.
