Can McCarthy compromise?

After what he said about Bowler and clearly seeing last nights second half performance that not only Josh.but also the other players at his disposal will he realise that we don't have the players to successfully play neck ache lump it forward football. Will he have a rethink and adapt his philosophy and play the ball on the floor more?

I'd no problem with his appointment, I really hadn't but he's got to know what his players can and can't do! Clearly he doesn't know though if he thinks Bowler is anything other than an out and out winger who offers next to nothing defensive wise. As some-one else pointed out, sure, McCarthys got bags of experience in sorting teams out and how he wants to play but we as fans have got 18 months experience of seeing what Bowler can and can't do. If he wants to be pig headed and not realise that then he's a fool.

If he manages to keep us up I really don't care if it's shit or if he upsets anyone. Last night I did wonder where our goals would come from, but I was glad we had Madine & Jerry on & the strengthening of the midfield, it's what a lot have been suggesting for months. CJ was picked on merit & the only changes I could see would have been Carey & CJ or Just Jerry or Madine (he's not mobile enough in my book for the lone striker) There's not enough places in the team to accommodate 2 strikers & Bowler Proveda & Rodgers, so either JB or MR, since Madine's now out of the equation we can just play Jerry. Heaven forbid he gets a serious injury, as we've only got Lavery or the almost unknown Beesley if he's not injured.

Critchley had a similar back 4 plus two DMs and it worked pretty well for us. So MM has sussed that out, which is positive, and hopefully sticks with it. But it shoukd allow us to then use our 4 best attacking players to give the opposition defence plenty to deal with. Mick needs to suss that out quickly cos we need to beat Rotherham and they will be better than Huddersfield I reckon. Carey, CJ and Madine shouldn't be starting, imo. We do have better options.

Well Madine misses the next 4 games anyway so that has to mean Yates up top and then he has to play Bowler and Rogers either side and Poveda in the number 10 role as he was doing before MM dropped him! That means the rest of the team can break up play and defend with the attackers defending when they need to.

As long as Kenny D is in there behind them with Tommy T, I can live with that pal. 😉

The only question over the 2 DCMs, and I didn't address this in another post is whether they are capable of finding passes (KD isn't and I don't know about Tyebull yet) or do you need Patino or Poveda to do that. And does that make us lightweight.

Why has Poveda gone to not getting any game time? McCarthy was full of praise for him after Southampton game but then just dropped him. Has something happened off the field again or is it just all about his dogs of war team selection?

We have to have the 2 defensive midfielders if you are playing the likes of Poveda, Rogers and Bowler in front, I was watching Trybull closely last night and when he was't watching the ball go miles out of defence in the air he payed really well and he is a real organiser, he would make a good captain. Dougall has to play but when Bridcutt (if) returns I think he will replace him. But as it stands he has to play.

Patino or Poveda can do that but they need to do it from the number 10 position so only one can play and I'd pick Poveda over Patino. Kenny is league 1 and his passing is awful but he gives everything, as soon as Bridcutt (see other post) is back he will slot straight in there. We are too defensively weak if we don't play 2 defensive midfielders but it has to be balanced by putting our most dangerous and exciting 4 players in front of them, so that means no CJ or Lavery

It does make you wonder, I would guess Poveda is apt to say what he thinks and old duffer is the sort of manager who will deal with a player like that quite severely, of course that is bought to you by conspiracy theories.inc

yep, as Insy said six defensive minded player and then four creative ones in some sort of shape.

You don't replace one of the DMs with Poveda or Patino in my book, we aren't good enough defensively, especially with the CM pairing changing so much.

You play one of them in front of 2 DMs, selected from TT, KD, LM and KS. As long as we have two of those fit! I don't think we are good enough to play one DM.

Patino came here to get experience and add something, not to hold us together. And he is adept at playing attacking players in and getting into the box. Same with Poveda.

And to say TT and KD can't pass isnt really true. Its a sweeping, one context reading of the situation. The sirt of nonsense Herts comes out with! If we get set up right, and settled, with the right options in front and out wide, they will find team mates more often than not. Stability leads to better passing surely. Too many peiple judge individuals who are under performing in a side that's not set up well, and not settled enough to gel together.

Sorry. Didn't make myself clear. I mean with 2 DCM you'd need a Pat or a Pove to pick the ball up and find the pass (not sure Pov could do that from deeper). It's OK with a KS, but CP would get targeted doing the forward role of the 3.

I said I wasn't sure about Tyebull and passing, but I'm bloody sure KD is likely to give the ball away trying it, often.

He must be a fool then. In his interview on the club website, he clearly doesn’t rate Bowler and he said he will have to learn the ‘other side’ of the game.

Indeed he is, if he doesn't realise there isn't another side to his game. There wasn't last night but he still managed to get us a draw by doing what he does best and that's by going forward and taking players on. From the wing.
