Cheltenham - The Right to Play

Having thought about the game last night and given the knee jerk reaction time to settle, what are the issues as I see them.

We arrived at Cheltenham last night knowing it is a small, tight ground and the approach they were going to take was to launch the ball into our area at every opportunity and get physically stuck in all over the pitch. No surprise really because recent away matches make it clear that works against Blackpool.

It seems obvious that it works against us for several reasons.

1. The centre of our defence is vulnerable because we lack the defenders who totally dominate in the air. The percentage of our headed clearance the go up rather than out is far too high and there is a lack of pace to recover. With what we had available last and both Casey and Ekepteta need to be out there. There was also a good case for playing a deep midfielder like Connolly to shield the back three.
2. Against teams like Cheltenham it is hard to justify the presence of Hamilton, Dembele and Lyons because they just don’t cut it physically especially when the referees have collectively declared an open season of hacking down Dembele.
3. Our midfield lacks the aggression and legs to compete with the physical effort put in by teams that play in the style of the opposition last night. The goals came last night because we simply didn’t close the opposition down when the long ball dropped in the area. In scrappy games you have to physically earn the right to play and we simply don’t too often
4. To play a possession based game you need a creative midfield with players off the ball continually moving into space. We are short in both of those, especially when Rhodes is missing. For various reasons Morgan, Norburn nor Carey are currently providing this.
5. Probably because of this lack of movement we are reduced to playing balls longer and the retention of of kuoassi, Lavery and Joseph is not great. Kuoassi is a big unit and has potential but is not quick or experienced enough to make the right runs, Lavery is quick but small and lacks awareness of the players around him and Joseph is talented but lacking the creative player to slide the ball through to him at the moment.
6. We need more pace added throughout the team and a more aggressive approach against teams willing to battle. Many things can be coached but some are inherent and down to character.

Unlike many on here I don't think sacking the manager is the answer and Critchley should be given more time to develop a stronger squad with a definite identity. At the moment our squad is what it is but consistentl calls to change the manager has not worked for us in the past and sometimes a long term view and patience is required.

We would all like to see free flowing football but first you need to win the physical battles.

Of course all this is my opinion and others might not agree

Some good points there. We are far too static.

Good post Stan ,but do you not think that by this stage of the season ,Critchley should have worked out a system to collect points away from home ?

Sometimes you have to be practical and it seems logical that in league one you will come across a number of teams who need to be physically more aggressive to get the results they need so we should develop a strategy to cope with them but the long term goal should to be a quality footballing side.

However if the long term plan is to develop our own style of possession football then you have to be patient and slowly bring in or develop the type of players to play that system effectively enough to win games

The question is are the customers being kept informed of the long term plan and can they see it developing on the pitch. On crowds of just over 10k I believe some of our fan base have very high expectations of what can be achieved instantly. To get in the championship and stay competitive in the longer term we need to show patience and grow slowly. Otherwise you have to rely on the luck of getting the right group of players at the right time and that tends not to last.

The constant changing of managers won’t lead to sustained long term success so I think it is time to give continuity the chance. I also worry that the constant sniping at the management will brass off Simon Sadler and make him wonder if it is worth it. You don’t realise what you had till you lose it.

We need to remember where we were not so long ago and realise what is being achieved.

Some sound comments Stan. And think most of us can see we're far too passive, we have no obvious 'style' and it would be a struggle to say what our Plan A is in terms of creating chances and scoring goals. There are periods of games where we lose control and lose second balls consistently. A lot of that can be rectified by tactical changes that get players into positions on the pitch to regain some control and 'get a foot on the ball.'
Part of that is also about digging in and earning the right to play. As you say, the team lacks character and the squad, aside from a couple, show very little in terms of spite and being right up for the fight. We're too easy to bully, we don't bully refs or try to gain an advantage through the dark arts and we're generally too much of a soft touch. The squad looks disjointed and uninterested in what they're being asked to do week in week out. They're either collectively not good enough or they don't believe that the coach is worth supporting.

The problem with all that, is how much of it is a reflection of Critchley and why has nothing been done to rectify it?

There's patience in the process and the long game and there's futility in doing the same thing again and again and getting nowhere fast.

Good assessment although disagree about keeping him... without a good no2 he is useless

For likes of you poor sods who went last night, for him not to make any changes at HT is diabolical but we all knew he wouldn't as waits for 70+ mins... which most games is OK but last night certainly wasn't

Never known us play so boring football... that corner 1st half totally summed us up.

Some good points around the squad, we definitely lack physicality all over the pitch for these sort of games.
But the manager needs to see in-game that we lacked numbers in central midfield and weren't picking up 2nd balls - answer put Virtue on. The centre backs were miles apart and we struggled to win headers as you said - put Marv on and go to a tighter back 4. The pitch was narrow and small - take CJ off as he's ineffective in those games. Ball wasn't sticking upfront - go 2 upfront rather than play with wide strikers. The list goes on and it all falls on Critchley.

Yes I agree about the short term answers to last nights match but still think the long term answer is to give the manager and recruitment staff the time to bring in or develop the players to play the system that will be able to come more effectively with any sort of opposition.

For that patience and continuity is needed

I am no fan of Marvin but last night was made for him . They lump it he heads it, not hard is it. Husband reminded me last night of Steve Harrison. Kicked it down line and out all night. Expected Wade Dooley and Martin Johnson to come on for a line out . No heart anywhere and the likes of CJ will never have one.
