I've been going over some of the YouTube videos this week from our season so far and loving how CJ would just run at defenders and scare the hell out of them. It's such a shame that he isn't fit as I believe on the Wembley pitch he could have been so devastating for us. His speed and his crosses would have been a wonderful asset too and him in full flow would have given the likes of Yates and Simms plenty of space to attack. Hopefully Mitchell carry on in a similar vein, he's put in some great performances so far. It's wonderful to see so many of our players can slot in to our team with little or no disruption.

Indeed. We all probably thought the loss of CJ was really going to make us suffer. In reality it just allowed others their chance to shine. And boy did they. Whether it be Gabriel, Embleton, Mitchell and even Turton they all played their part on that right side of the pitch.

I’ve seen plenty of fast players over the years for Pool - well they weren’t that fast, just that there have been more slow players making them look fast!
Lol. I think it’s the number in the same squad. We’ve always had 1 or 2 but I don’t remember having so many at the same time

Your right of course Chunky, these days they are more athletes who are good at football than footballer who are also athletes!

Back in the day of course they were “good” at football, but most of them thought training was just playing football again in the morning then off to the cafe for pie and chips then golf course or snooker hall, few fags and swift halves in the afternoon twice a week.

Very few will have had special diets and training that didn’t involve a football - speedwork, weights, core strength etc. Few exceptions of course Sir Stan!

I mean, who didn’t dream of one day turning up to the match to watch and the manager coming over and whispering in your ear “fancy a game lad? Charnley’s banged his knee and you’ve got ears just like him”

These days you would struggle to outrun a player who’s just run 12k in a game and done 30 mins extra time! It’s all about how fast you are over 100M

Cant understand why Mitchell hasnt started more, especially since CJ injured. Tried many there but Mitchell natural replacement.
Has to start Sunday.... surely??

We have so many ways of playing at the moment but CJ is that player who can really add a whole dimension on his own, and I'd back him to grow quicker and the game suit him more at Championship level.

Excited to see how Critch utilises him next season (whichever league) now that, as someone else mentioned, we are a more complete team that when he was featuring.

CJ is probably our only player which affects how the opposition set up.

It's a shame he's going to be injured regularly, probably due to the speed he operates at. Got to put muscles under additional strain when you can run 100m in boots in less than 11 seconds.

Look forward to seeing him again next season. Hopefully we can keep him injury free.
Mitchell has been a revelation and he was a free agent 😬.

I think, early doors, he disappointed. Latterly Critchley's worked out how to use him well and he's responded

Early season he scared the sh** out of opposition defenders. It's difficult to deal with pure pace. I can't wait to see CJ next season whichever league we're in.

For me it's consistency. Until recently Mitchell's final ball and decision making has been poor. His confidence has improved greatly and he's played brilliantly recently. Really starting to see what he's all about and it's exciting.

Was singled out by many managers and players as 'one to watch' this season after some brilliant performances - in the end, what was his injury and where was he up to with it?

Mitchell arrived crocked and it has been a build him up slowly process. CJ is a superstar in the making such a shame he has missed so much of the season.

CJ certainly has terrific pace that allows him to beat players and get in some good goal scoring positions. His close ball control, passing, crossing and shooting are less well developed and often let him down. He would be great to have on the bench on Sunday. What is the latest state on his injury and his return?

We don't have another player with the kind of pace to unlock defences. IMO, anyone who can't see what a dangerous and valuable player CJ is doesn't understand football.

I think with his pace, if he consistently produced a killer final ball or got a shot away on target, he wouldn't be playing in the first division.

I agree about CJ, however, we've had our best spells without him.
Just hope he's fit for next season.
He'll worry most defences in the Championship. 👍

The great thing about CJ was he was another problem for a manager to worry about and that is what you need in these sorts of games.

I think he'd definitely benefit now we are an overall better unit. He was a victim of our over-reliance on him to some degree, just as it was detrimental to the squad overall.
great post. In a way, CJ from being the early season star has become the forgotten man with the rise and form of Yates. Next season irrespective of division we are in will present it's own problems for Critchley to harness getting the best of CJ without any detriment to the team. Certainly at the start of the season we were probably over reliant on CJ.
