COBWEB Records

I used to like thumbing through the ex jukebox singles at the stall in abingdon Street Market. With the centres punched out. All the old glam stuff in the early 70s.
Me too Mark, all my first singles were ex jukebox. Wasn't there another market hall other than Abingdon Street, just across the road from/near to the bus station?
Or am I confusing that with Abingdon Street, wasn't it just behind the main GPO buildings?
Bloody hell it's a long time ago! My wife used to work at Anne Gerald's hairdressers as a junior, I think that was just across from the back doors to Abingdon Street Market.

Hi Guys, this is 'Record Dave' from Cobweb, sorry for the late reply, but I'm currently in the (stressful) process of selling my late Mother's house in Cleveleys. Many thanks for all your kind words whilst reminiscing about the past, it's much appreciated!
I'm still watching the Pool at every home game, plus (occasionally) away and praying for a miracle in the next two weekend's fixtures!

Cobweb was first established in late 1971 in a small shop on Victoria Rd Cleveleys (which used to be a Chiropodists), in between where KFC is now and Mr.Nitros Ice Cream (which used to be an old hardware store). I started working there as a weekend job at the age of 12 with free records as my payment. We then expanded into the corner shop and then later moved into larger premises down the road, which is now BP Insurance (formerly Swinton). I became the Cleveleys shop manager after leaving Baines Grammar School in Poulton.

Cobweb Poulton opened in 1974 as part of the original Teanlowe Shopping Centre, on the outside facing the car park, next to the public loos! Myself and Geoff (the original business partner to the recently deceased Derek Kirk) took over the Poulton Cobweb in 1985 and successfully ran it until 2007, when nobody wanted to buy music anymore (only download). We then sold our lease to Lloyds Chemist next door, who knocked through into a double unit and the rest is history!

Take care, keep the faith (whichever division we are in next season) and UTMP! 🧡

alrite pal good to hear from you. you will know me by sight, we used to go on Oz’s coaches everywhere! I went with “big ken”. Do u still see the dad and son who went with you, from Fleetwood i think ?

edit to add; we just knew you as “Cobweb” in the early days 😜

Hi mate, good to hear from you too, how is 'Big Ken' doing? I still go home and away with 'Young Paul' (in his mid forties now), we have season tickets together in the South Stand. Unfortunately his Dad 'Old Paul' (my best mate) died suddenly a few years ago, aged just 60, which was a massive shock to us all! RIP Paul 🧡

Cheers matey, we go in the Tyldesley Club on Palmer Avenue near Bloomfield Rd before the home games for an hour or so, Ozzie goes in there too and lots of other familiar faces. Will be in there on Friday from about 6.45pm-ish if you fancy a pint? 🍻

I used to cycle into Poulton and buy the latest CD’s and singles from Dave. And talk about BFC.
Used to order all my obscure American stuff from their extensive catalogues. Then I’d pop into a cafe for a coffee and teacake before cycling back. Fond memories. Hope you’re well Dave. Was gutted when you closed up. I’m still buying obscure CD’s, lol.

thanks mate. i’m in the Armfield on Friday meeting some mates being the last home game etc but i will do next season, it be good to have a pint or two. Are u doing Norwich?

The Jeff Smith, in the photo, was a school pal of mine and worked at Cobweb part-time whilst at school.

He is now controller of BBC Radio 2 and Radio 6!

He`s probably the person to blame for messing around with the radio 6 evening format and reducing the hours of Mark Riley and Gideon Coe....🤬
I just heard Mark Riley say something about this last night, WTAF😡😡

Dave I am also in the south are you the one they call the pieman at the back of block v
Cheers for that Milo, I do like the odd pie but hopefully not known as the pieman! 😂 The guy I think you're referring to, with the bald head (I've still got hair) who likes a couple of pies and/or hotdogs per game, sits near to us on the opposite side of the steps towards the East! 🥧😉

Still debating the Norwich decision, will see what happens tomorrow night?🤞

Hi Steve mate, good to hear from you and long time no see, UTMP! 🍊🍻

I used to get my record's from a shop on Coronation St , part of the Winter Gardens, proper old school were you went into a booth to listen to your record ..... no idea what it was called with my memory !!!
Starpic, or was it Starpic Studio.

Later on, around 75 or 76 it became Musicmania, which then moved to Dickson Road, sort of opposite the Odeon.

I’ve traded a few of my own purchases vinyls over the years in shops but would never throw one away. I’ve still got my great grandmothers old 78s down to original American vinyl Elvis releases that my grandfather brought directly over form the USA in the early days of his career and everything in between that have been passed down the inheritance line and my own collection of decades up to £45 a pop at HMV

there’s something special about vinyl and also the records are a snapshot and remind you of people’s own personalities even when long gone. Sad that Cobweb survived so long and then close just before things started turning around again for vinyl which is the only way to make money from physical music these days.

Oasis released What's the story? on the same day they played the Express Ballroom. I got the train from Stoke, jumped off at Poulton, got a cassette from Cobweb and had about 1 listen before heading to town for a few beers pre-gig.

i attended regularly in the 60s when Jimmy Armfield was captain. I recall George Best coming and scoring 3
I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
