Connolly best position

If Connolly continues at right back with an actual right back available then the manager needs sacking on the spot. He’s awful at right back.
At Millwall Appleton played five at the back and had Connolly at RWB despite having Gabriel available who he put on the bench

I think he is a player who will get plenty of starts when there are injuries and suspensions but I see him as a sub in reality. A great player but a bit of a Jack of all trades, which is an important type of player to have in your squad.

I actually think he may start on Saturday at right back but if Lyons starts and has a good game then Connolly will have to bide his time

If they don't get a CB over the line, then I can see Lyons at LB with JH LCB. Not what I'd do.

If he's never played in his best position for us maybe it's unfair to call him a bench warming utility player?
What is his beast position, he can play right back, centre half and central midfield? I wouldn't have him in the side with the new players we have. Maybe right back as he has been steady there all season.

He's a beast in any position.

He hasn't played CB for us as far as I recall. Not in a two anyway.

Played right of a back three for Fleetwood. Played a mix of left back, centre half, right back and centre mid for other clubs he's been at as well. Started his career as a midfielder.

I think he comes back in at right back on Saturday. Not sure how Appleton sees Lyons yet. Whether he thinks he's fully ready for the championship. If he's a player he'd have signed himself or is a player that was signed for him to manage. We'll obviously know more at 2pm on Saturday if he keeps his place but I'm not expecting to see that.

He's a good Paul Madeley type of player (the whippersnappers can google him), and is of course young and still developing. He's a bench man at the moment when there's a full squad to choose from, and will get on in most games, but will become a starter in a season or two.

That's where AL has been playing for SR and been getting good reviews (FAI YPOTS).

Wouldn't surprise me. Not what I'd do....
Not as a left back. They had him as an attacking left wing back with a defender behind him in a team who won their league by 13 points so spent more time in the opposition half than his own.

Didn't see any domestic games, but in Europe he had to defend.

And they got a kicking in qualifying for the europa league and then finished bottom of their group in the conference league with the lowest points and worst goal diff, as you'd expect because of their domestic level and funding.

Fairy snuff.

He did play that side though and if MA wants to keep Conners in the team, then Lyons could only be selected LB or LWB in a 5.

I can't imagine many Championship clubs wouldn't want him in their squad. Think he's a Centre-half by trade but so versatile and always 6/10

If Appleton can play strikers on the wing, he is more than capable of not playing Lyons at right back.

To be fair, Appleton will know best if he is ready. If there is any doubt, Connolly might be the right call for Saturday. Hopefully Lyons can slot in and perform well. We can't afford anymore signings that don't make a positive impact otherwise we are definitely down.

Now we have Lyons as a right back, could displace Connolly, but I think he's a better midfielder than a right back.

I do think Connolly will continue in the right back position though
As Lyons is a natural RB, & as Jordan isn't yet fit, I hope MA thinks he's ready to start there on Saturday. Hopefully Jordan isn't far away from match fitness.
To complete the team, we still need to sign (permanently not another loan), a tall, grizzly, tough, mobile CH

I didn't warm to him for quite a while, but he certainly is another steady 100% player. Not a world-beater but cover for many positions. I feel he may quite harshly find himself on the bench, unless we suffer more injuries.

To answer the OP probably on the bench
Agree mate, he's another one like Kenny Dougall, done a decent job for us but we have to aspire to an overall better standard of specialists in every position if we want to keep progressing.

In terms of players like them I tend to think of which other teams in this division would these players get in, other than Rotherham and Wigan and possibly Huddersfield the answer is probably none

Seems to have played fairly evenly on both sides this season, but in earlier seasons was overwhelmingly a RB.

I don't know enough about how Shamrock's squad and how they play to be sure, but my guess is that he's been playing on the left for tactical/personnel reasons rather than any particular desire to play there, since we're far stronger at LB than at RB I can't see that continuing whilst he's here.

Based on Boxing Day, I reckon I could get a game at Hull.

No , Connolly definitely played centre back last season, away at Millwall & got sent off.
Ok I stand corrected.

But he's hardly been given a real opportunity there has he? And was filling in having trained to play elsewhere.

However the side at Millwall was:

C Maxwell, L Garbutt, C Connolly
red card
(s/o 14), R Keogh, Marvin Ekpiteta, K Dougall
yellow card
, R James, K Anderson
yellow card
, J Bowler (T John-Jules, 88), S Lavery (K Stewart, 67), J Yates
yellow card
(C Hamilton, 76)

So it would appear he was at RB with Marv and Keogh in the centre.

Let's stick to the truth folks!
