Cosgrove

He scored 8 goals in League 1 last season for Plymouth, not sure if everyone knows but Plymouth won the League, League 1 that it is.

Scored another 4 in cups so 12 goals.

If he’s 1 of our 4 strikers then he looks like a decent option.

Any signing we make needs to be an upgrade on what we have… if he contributed to Plymouth going up, I would say he’s an upgrade on 1 of our current 3 strikers & as another 1 of them hasn’t played a minute yet in the League he looks a decent option.

He's the type of striker we lack. Plus he's only 26 so neither over the hill or wet behind the ears.

I also note Nixon has a story on Reading looking at a Blackpool player available on a free? I assume that could be Trybull.

Cosgrove seems a bit of an enigma.

Plymouth fans were raving about him at first, his goals/mins ratio was up with Haaland's, but he tailed off as the season went on.
Some thought it was a confidence thing, others that he lost interest.

But he's quick for a big lad, very useful defensively and a good finisher - Schumacher said he was the best at the club.
Plymouth often used him as a substitute, battering tiring defences.

Where's Pasty Muncher when you need him? 😉

Apparently that's Joe Strawn, released by us.

Reading can't afford Trybull's wage, surely?

Andy Carroll plays for them, so I suspect they could. But as said above it is Jack Strawn who they are interested in.
The fact they could sign Carroll a year ago doesn’t reflect what they can spend now

But to emphasise, yes it is Strawn they’re after! Before Trybull to Reading becomes ‘factamundo’

This guy wouldn’t be bad at all IMO, 8 goals and 2 assists in 33 appearances for Plymouth last year, but only 13 of those 33 appearances were starts (he was a sub player mostly but did well with the minutes given to him).

He averaged a goal every 166 minutes in L1 last year which was a better record than Colby Bishop and Alfie May, think he could be decent if given a run of games.

Good afternoon, just back from a lovely walk along the east coast of Scotland on my hols in Elie. Makes a change to walking the pooches at St Ann's (which is lovely too).
Cosgrove was signed by Birmingham from Aberdeen for £2M , he was then loaned out to Wimbledon where apparently he was an utter donkey.
Argyle signed him on loan & we were pleasantly surprised how good he was. Schumacher mainly used him if plan A was going pear shaped (i.e. when Hardie & Ennis two small nippy strikers weren't hitting it off). This resulted in Argyle turning round a number of games in their favour. Cosgrove scored two at Derby when Argyle were two nil down resulting in an ultimate win & a cracking header against The Massive to turn the game round. He was very much a part of Argyle's Championship winning season.
For a big guy he's got surprisingly good ball control & is good for holding the ball up front & is great for defending set pieces.
He'd be a great addition to your squad but I wouldn't rely on him being your sole striker to depend on. Schumacher managed to get the best out of him , I reckon Critchley could do the same.
One negative ; he committed a horror tackle on a Bolton player in the Pizza final, how he only got a yellow God only knows but that was out of character ( probably due to frustration on Argyle being totally outplayed) but I suppose a horror tackle on a Bolton player would go down well up here ....back to my hols...

Thanks for a very articulate, and knowledgeable, summary.

I imagine the very fact that we know about this means he will end up elsewhere.

Sounds like he is what we need, but the bit about him losing interest last season is a red flag. I think we have had enough of that?

Correct, Banks....gone out on loan after reports we were signing him
Moxon......all gone quiet since Carlisle upped the anti
Waghorn.......obviously ended up at Derby despite being linked with us.

Ta dah, Weir......out of nowhere. No reports, no rumours, nowt. Our player for the season. And whether we like it or not, that's how Sadler and the recruitment team work🤷

Saw a lot of him last year - my missus is Argyle and, as we live overseas, our Saturday afternoons involve having Plymouth on one screen and Pool on the other (the bigger of the two screens naturally). To be honest, I wasn't that impressed with him - probably one of the worst big men I've ever seen in the air. Granted he is strong and holds the ball up well and the brace against Derby was a thing of beauty. I believe he was on mega-bucks - top earner at the club after Bali Mumba - is that right, Pasty Muncher?

It was a guess because I'm unsure who else we'd let go on a free? I suspect we would allow him to leave as he will be on big wages and if Critchley doesn't want him and we didn't pay a fee, he seems the most likely.
Joe Strawn apparently. He's available on a free because we've released him!

I didn't think he was that bad in the air though, see at 1 min 45 secs...

Are we sure he's not Gary Madine? 😂

Good luck to him if he signs. Won't be long til he's getting slagged off for not being fast and silky as well as being 6'4".
Doesn't have to be fast, he's s big lad, but getting into the penalty area on the same day that the cross was delivered would be an improvement on the last big centre forward!
