Critchley v1 vs v2

The side that won promotion lined up in a 4-5-1, mainly due to the last minute injury to Simms, otherwise it would have most likely been the preferred 4-4-2. Question is, which of our current crop would you swap? I've tried to match them up as close as possible and here's my view:

Maxwell - Grimshaw, it's easy to pick Grimmy but in truth, Maxwell was excellent in our promotion season. I'll give the nod to Grimshaw, just.

Turton - Gabriel, no question I'd pick Jordan, as much as Turton was a decent player, he was limited.

Ballard - Ekpiteta, as much as Marv had a great game last night, Ballard wins by a distance.

Husband - Husband, I'll take v1 Husband over the current player we have.

Garbutt - Coulson, Luke by a distance because he actually contributed goals and assists. Neither can defend.

Mitchell - Hamilton, CJ wins this battle, both quick but Hamilton scored and assist more.

Stewart - Norburn, he may have turned into a sicknote towards the end of his time with us but Stewart was in a different league to Norburn.

Dougall - Morgan, Dougall again takes this one, Albie is too inconsistent although has ability he just doesn't always produce.

Anderson - Dembele, love them both, Keshi was awesome when fully fit, as is Kaddy. I'll call it a tie.

Yates - Rhodes, both prolific in L1. Jerry had youth and an incredible work ethic. Rhodes just oozes class but is in his twilight years as a professional footballer. Another that is too close to call.

Simms - Joseph, an easy decision, Ellis scored goals, Kyle doesn't. Both have great potential but it has to be the former Everton man.

V1 6.5 - V2 4.5

V1 take it but it is quite close. What I would say isn't close is how V1 setup and played, it was a far more entertaining brand of football than we see now. That's not to say there hasn't been some good stuff but I'd imagine V1 would run out easy winners if there was a hypothetical game.

Dembele is better than Anderson.

Yates all round game and goals he got too probably brings a fraction more than Rhodes, who is an expert finisher/poacher, although Rhodes does have intelligent link up play too.

Just no pace at all and the pressing game is nowhere near.

The thread titled says Critchley v1 vs v2, yet that comparison isn't fully analysed.

He's come back different and isn't as good tactically at changing things or setting up a style with as much effectiveness.

Maybe that was his assistants that helped with that, but whenever he's tried to play football, like early season in his first spell, or here early this season, we dominated but have zero cutting edge. Or when pressed, we pass around aimlessly and then have to go long.

Is not having the players for it a factor? Maybe, but unlike other managers he's never been able to set us up to play effective passing football, the way he said we would play.

The last paragraph references the style of play. We could easily go with a 4-4-2 with the squad we have. The Villa and QPR experiences have made him a far more cautious coach and he has had 2 transfer windows to improve things, I don't think either have been close to good enough in terms of transfer dealings. Things rarely work out when returning to a club, I don't see anything other than things getting a little toxic and him going in the summer.

The main issue here is that v1. Had balance and players playing in their actual positions.
Barring Coulson who is neither a defender or a winger from what I've seen so far, I'm unsure who is out of position. The system doesn't work but what system would when we have midfielders who can't get close to opposition or pass the ball in any other direction than backwards.

There is no chance Hamilton is a right wing back.

In all honesty, there's no chance he's a footballer, I think he's some form of experiment to test us.

leave out Husband and go with Ballard and Ekpiteta.

Anderson wasn't awesome at all.
Compared to what we have now, he was very good. He didn't look out of place in the Championship, let alone L1. Obviously his injury record was a problem but a fully fit Keshi would walk into our current team.
