Critchley's Breach of Contract

Critchley signs a 5 year extension to his contract last year. Presumably under no duress to do so. In his view, a better offer comes along less than 12 months later and he beggars off! Okay, we then receive compensation from Aston Villa, but he walks away from a legal contract scott free!
This doesn't seem right to me. He has breached his contract!
The same situation applies for all managers and players. I am no great expert on contract law, but it seems to me to be fairer that if someone breaks their legal agreements, they should be held personally responsible and be penalised financially.

There is no breach of contract, the club could have held him to the contract and refused his permission to speak with or move to Villa. That however would have been pointless as you don’t want to keep an employee who does not want to be there. So, we agree to release him from his contract and in return we get X amount of compensation for the value of the remainder of his contract.

The contract will have incorporated provisions for either party opting to terminate the contract for whatever reason. If the compo has been paid by Villa, then the contract hasn't been breached. Think of it as buying your way out of a mobile phone contract early, just with bigger numbers.
Be interesting to know if the club/CEO were aware of the alleged rovers thing

The point of compensation is that the club, Villa in this instance, buy Critchley out of his contract. So no breach other than Villa (Gerrard) speaking to him before making an official approach via the club.

I appreciate what you all say, but that seems to be the law as it presently stands. Many of the comments on here at the time of the announcement of his departure, referred to the fact that money is always the determining factor. Money and greed go hand in hand in football.
Maybe the law could be changed so that a player or manager who walks out on a previously agreed contract could be made personally responsible to pay their employer compensation just as in the same way that if a club sacks a manager, the club pays out the contract.

Don't worry we'd have been well compensated. It could turn out to be a good bit of business yet.

Except we are now left lumbered with Critchleys backroom staff, who will either have to be paid off, or work with the new manager.
This could be a big stumbling block in landing the desired manager, who will want to bring in his own trusted team.

I thought the 5 year contract was also to protect Blackpool in case another club came sniffing around meaning we'd get more compensation.
Signing a long contract is perhaps the only decent thing that Ditchy did. It obviously protects the Club and the buy out clause probably wouldn't be so big it would inhibit Ditch when he decided that ditch us was what he was going to do.

I think that they ARE personally liable, it's just that the new club always pays it either in the form of transfer fee or compensation

In Ben mansfords interview he said that he had a call from critchley saying that Gerrard had called him asking him to join him at villa, is that not seen as tapping up as the club had no idea at this point? I always thought this wasn't allowed?
Agree. I think because of this tapping up and ditchley wanting out , the club had no choice but to let him go as a protracted argument over it being an illegal approach would have done the club no good at all. Consequently ditchleys decision to go will have been a massive breach of trust with the club who have given him everything he needed didn't end amicably, hence ditchley not making a comment. Personally I hope the told the test to f,*#ck off

So when he left Liverpool to come to us did we have to pay compo to them ? Or was he out of contract / no longer required by them ?

No need to fret as managers are like Ships in The Night.

Bollocks to Slippy and traitor anyway. Villa fans seem to think they're qualifying for Europe next season so they could both be out of a job by Christmas.

That is why clubs pay compensation. Job sorted…

Its a good point as to whether Aston Villa asked permission to speak to Critch? sound like they just tapped him up direct. Football, esp Premier League and the useless EFL are just bothered about money and have simply no class at all and need to be careful that Football doesn't start to lose its attraction and Sky turn against it. Real fans are treated like shit!!

This is what Sadler does as his day job to cover all the bases …. long and short term

The compensation will have been very decent so don’t worry about breach of contract.

e interesting to know if the club/CEO were aware of the alleged rovers thing

I know for a fact (know someone who works at Rovers, that Critchley was interviewed for the Rovers job and so it was interesting when Mansford said that Critch's decision came completely out of the blue. Would be interesting to know if the club knew about that interview.

How can you possibly ‘know for a fact?’
