Danny Drinkwater

I had looked through before putting mine on, but didn 't see his name on any heading. So if there is another independent post there could be some truth in it!
There isn’t another independent thread on it. Went back a page and a half in threads and someone mentioned Drinkwater in a thread discussing available free agents. So well worthy of a thread on its own 👍

Someone tried to be cryptic with the name it's the one with emoji things as the subject header.

He's certainly had his demons but was fucked over by Chelsea and apparently he was pretty gash at Reading for the first half of his loan but got a grip and was decent in the second half of the season. Has undoubted pedigree and if we sign him then if he has got his head together he will have a point to prove, he's only 32.

Drinkwater could be to us what Bridcutt was to Lincoln. We can't simply sign entirely 18-22 year olds with no experience and with Keogh gone, Gaz's influence probably more for the bench, that leaves Marvin and Kenny as leader types and they're not enough.

It's a very logical thing to do - what am I missing here?
It's logical to get experience in but surely there's question marks over the player. He's not really done anything since leaving Leicester and his reputation is poor. Are we really the club to change that in him? Another Lee Hendrie maybe ? Who knows.

Of course there'd be question marks but you can see how Appleton is thinking if there's anything in this.

He's not had the backing to get his 'number 6' in for his 4-1-2-3 this summer. And the inherited players probably don't cut it for him so he's got to get creative and influence his board. If they expect him to work in the way he wants to as their choice of head coach. It's clear with how it's gone that they don't sign the players for him to pick and he's took the lead on most of the movement in and out.

A fit Kevin Stewart and then maybe this isn't a rumour but he's never fit. It'll be one or the other and then I think coming into January a few more decisions might be made.

Appy will know him from his Leicester days l assume but going to Chelsea probably didn’t help him.

Every time I see us linked with a name I’ve actually heard of, I think: ‘great... but, oh crap, what about their wage demands?’

That's where Big Ben earns his £300k a year getting the club a deal but not in a way that puts the player off.

What player without question marks are we going to get tho? We're only able to compete for as yet unfulfilled potential and potentially bust players. How many 32 year olds are knocking about with England Caps, Champions' League experience, willing to play at our level and for a cost we can afford?

There can't be many...

Obviously he might be shite, but any signing might be shite.

I always thought surnames were often based on what you did. I'm "Smith" so presumedly someone down the line knocked up some armor or something. Just saying drinking water is hardly an achievement.

Eh if he's cheap we could give him a go, why not.

yep, similar background to appleton. he has made enough dough to make a smart decision for himself now. proximity to family and little pressure on himself are all in our favour i think. if it's a goer, i'd take a punt.

.....apparently he was pretty gash at Reading for the first half of his loan but got a grip and was decent in the second half of the season.
Maybe he took time to get going at Reading because he was exceptionally ring rusty.
In the three previous seasons he made a grand total of 16 league appearances for Chelsea & Kasımpaşa (Turkey, on loan).
But he poses the same question as for any player over 30 - has he still got the hunger?

He was born in Manchester, so could be an opportunity to be closer to home.

Plus he has made his fortune, so could be more interested now in playing regularly.

I've read before that he had an element of regret about his move to Chelsea, so would be hungry to kick on.

Wouldn't mind him as think he could give some needed experience to the squad, but I just can't see it happening.

He is set for life from his time at Chelsea and Leicester so the only incentive he would have to play is if he truly wants to prove that he is still capable of playing at a high (ish) level?

If he truly loves the game and just wants to play then fair, but I just can't see it.

Wouldn't mind to be proven wrong.

Always thought he was hugely overrated, but that was when he was playing for England and Chelsea splurged £35m on him.

I trust Appleton won't sign him if his heart's not in it. If he has the legs to play as a #6 for us and he fancies it, why not? It'll be an interesting one if it happens.

Imagine a midfield of Drinkwater and Stewart in the centre with Patino right and Poveda on the left......now THAT would be a midfield.

His ancestors might have provided drinking water for many which is a worthy achievement!

By the way...Madine is an anglicized form of the Gaelic O Madaidhin which means 'the descendant of Madaidhin' - a personal name from the diminutive of 'mada' or 'madra' meaning a hound or dog. (if I remember correctly 🤣)

Plenty moaning we have no experience then moaning because we're linked with an experienced midfielder.
I'm not against signing him because of his experience, he wouldn't be my choice based on the fact he has been terrible for the best part of 5 seasons.

Not all of those work-related surnames are so obvious. So, 'drink' may be refreshment and 'water could be a river. Got it! He comes from a family of publicans who owned Riverside pubs. Works for me.

From the north so maybe fancies being close to home. The guy was an instrumental cog in a side that won the premier league. Chelsea signed him for a lot of money for a reason. He’s obviously had a poor couple or years, but if we get him and his heads in it, what a signing it’d be.

He ain't nothin but a hound dog. 👍

In the Middle Ages, when our surnames were developed, drinking water was very dangerous because of the parasites and bacteria it contained. Instead, people drank "small beer" (containing less alcohol) to kill the bugs.

So anyone who drank water (and survived) was super tough and not be messed with. They took the name Drinkwater to prove how hard they were.

The first para is true. The second I made up, but it might be true. Who needs facts when we're allowed opinions? 😂

Leicester won the league 6 years ago, that's more than a couple of seasons. I have several friends who support Reading and they were less than impressed with him, albeit they weren't overly impressed with many of their squad last season. We have seen players who haven't done well elsewhere flourish here, so if Appleton thinks he's worth a deal, it will do for me. Personally I'd go for Dale Stephens though.

It depends what version of him rocks up. He's won the Premier League title with Leicester and played a significant part in that. He's had 5 largely wasted years. For various reasons. He's 32 and very likely wants to make up for lost time. Grown up a bit hopefully. From his recent interview:

"The midfielder spent last season in the Sky Bet Championship with Reading where he played 32 games, and it was a loan spell that helped Drinkwater regain his confidence and start to enjoy his football again.

"I joined Reading, and I expected to be flying after eight games, but after 20 games, I was like - what's happening here? I still didn't feel properly fit and I can't get my sharpness. I felt like I wasn't really benefitting the team…and I was like 'Wow, has it gone? What's happened?'.

"Then you get a feeling back. The last part of last season, it was good. A new gaffer came in, and it was good. He helped me, and I felt I was helping the team. That's probably the first time I'd enjoyed football for years."
