Had six months to bring in some really good additions to the squad, George Byers, Hayden Coulson, Dan Sassi and Ryan Finnigan. Hardly a huge success. Byers will be OK. but in terms of the strengthening we needed it really scratched the surface. Love a job like his if that's all you have to do to earn your corn!

There are plenty of people to criticise at the club at the moment, but he isn't one of them.

Stupid post. Utterly pathetic

The point is we should have strengthened in the January window

And we didn't
I think January highlighted our ambitions for this season.

Oxford went and got Goodwin.
Bolton splashed the cash on Collins.
Pompey went and got a few notably Lang.

We brought in George Byers on loan and have started him twice in 5 games.

I’m not even going to discuss Coulson bar for saying they must have put “left footed” “LWB” in the database search because he’s below average.

I do wonder though if NC isn’t that arsed about making signings… he’s alluded to “what’s already in the building” and “within the group” a lot which I thought was hinting at Gary Madine. He’s loyal to too many as proven last night. Makes it easier to select his teams and look after what he’s got.

But we have only signed up two of our out of contract players, so he isn't that bothered with what is already in the building!

Far too early to judge fully, but lots of the summer signings have been very good.

Jan is always a hard window and tbh is it worth paying more of the limited budget when we didn't look likely to catch up to the teams above...

That money gets you more in the summer.

Saying that we still did some decent business and some for the future and the club always look to improve, but whoknows what sort of a go we might have had if we were higher up.

Big pressure on this man now. The starting XI yesterday were all our own players and half of them are not good enough. The loans will go back and then we will be left with the likes of Jake Beesley, Sonny Carey and Norburn. Mediocre League One football will soon start to set in. This reminds me of the era after Owen went to prison and we went from challenging to existing and we know how that ended.

If Critchley is here and we all now know he is a 3-5-2 merchant, let's hope we actually sign players to play that system.
This season he has played that system stubbornly, players shoehorned into uncomfortable positions or made to take possession of the ball in areas of the pitch they aren't comfortable in.
CJ right back, Connolly/Dale left back and Marv ( great defender but Bobby Moore he isn't) being just the ones that spring immediately to mind.

The squad is easily good enough to be top six. Should be top two in my opinion. The manager is the one to blame. System and tactics.
I agree on the tactics point however I disagree that our squad is good enough for top six. There are a number players, who for me, are bottom league one at the very best, more league two. But saying that, if we played a tactic that works, 4-4-2 or my preference of 4-3-3, which has a defensive midfielder two attacking wingers and a striker we would probably be in the top 6. Or even having a plan b as it appears we don’t change anything when chasing a game, other than like for like subs.

As bad as last season was, I enjoyed it more than this as it’s bored the life out of me!!

In danger of putting the cart before the horse here with David Downes.

Priority no.1 should be getting rid of Critchley.

Priority no.2 should be getting a new manager, who is willing and able to play entertaining, exciting football.

Then it’s over to David Downes and new manager to work to bring in the right type of player, coupled with a Thames Water style clearout of the cräp.

Thames Water style at the moment seems to be withholding any investment...

Which begs the question who's really to blame Critchley or Sadler for the lack of investment in the team.

NCs third season with us:
1 Promotion
2 Comfortably safe in the championship,
3 Top 8

Win % is 43.

Can only work with what you have / get in.

Oxford - Paying Brannagan £15k/week
Pompey, Horwich Posh will all be in considerably more debt as a club compared to us.

££ gaps widening next season between Championship and Div 3,
and this league wont be anywhere near as easy as this season.
£4m team investment would have romped this league this season.

To an extent its not too disimilar to when the Os ran the show in that reluctance to speculate to accumulate.

System and tactics are little to do with strikers that can't put away chances or shoot properly on target. Joseph, Lavery, Kouassi, CJ have all been poor and Beesley not much better. With the exception of Dembele (sometimes) and Morgan our passing, set pieces and movement have been woeful. People moan about Norburn passing sideways to keep possession, but there are rarely players moving into space going forward. And Grimshaw's distribution to the forwards is poor and slow when players like Lavery do move for the ball. Most of the team lack quality and there is not enough creativity and goals in the team, which is nowhere near a top 2 side.

What's wrong with Kouassi? He was another who did more in 15 minutes than others in 90.
Doesn't look like he has many goals in him, not the only thing to judge a centre forward on but probably the biggest thing. I am not sure if he is good enough, leaning towards not good enough but hope to be proved wrong.

I actually think Kouassi and Beesley have come out this season ok. Beesley looks more likely to score than Lavery or Joseph. Kouassi had barely played before he joined us.

I think Kouassi has great potential. Not being used well IMO.
But, when you're a specialist - as Critch clearly is - in attempting to 'shoe-horn' individuals into positions they clearly aren't suited to, what else should we be expecting? A question certain players (for example, Kouassi) have doubtless been asking themselves throughout the course of the current campaign ...
