Did you ever go to the pub in Christmas Day?

Have done for the last 20 odd years or so. Usually go with the father in law and a few other male family members for just a couple of pints. Probably not this year though.

Why not?

Christmas is all about traditions; What's changed this year? People just getting older and it being harder?

As a youth I used to work Xmas day so always went to the pub for a couple or three. They were indeed busy.

Don't think many people do it anymore. Not many people go to the pub full stop.

I used to do the same Wiz, but to the Golden Ball. I'd give anything to go for a pint on Christmas Day with my Dad again.
Happy days.
In the 80's, I'd meet up with my Dad and my brother for a Christmas gallon in The Dunes, which opened for 2 hours at lunchtime
The place was always rammed, and it was very enjoyable.

Nowadays I enjoy a beer at home with the wife and kids, I don't even look to see if any pubs are open. Different times as Wiz says.

I had a couple of pubs, not at the same time, in Bradford in the early eightees, and we always opened Christmas day Lunchtime, always a great atmosphere and plenty of spirits sold as well as beer.

One year I decided to try a Christmas day night opening, and it was a mistake. I got every drunken idiot in the area in the pub, a couple of fights, a number of items stolen and I closed after about one and a half hours of mayhem. The clean up took ages.

Used to be a great session! Everyone in a good mood and a silly jumper, downing as much ale as they could in the time available ‘cos it was only open for two hours.

Had a great night 1988 in my local boozer. Got the family stuff out the way and met up with some mates at 8pm got a lock in and got home 3am. Back into the pub at 12 noon for boxing day, the joys of youth!

Going to do exactly that this year in Lancaster. We got let down when Holbeck Ghyll cancelled the 4 day Xmas stay last minute and closed.

So my friend invite us over to do a Christmas pub crawl in Lancaster, followed by curry and then guitars coming out later on 😁

It’s a first!

thanks for all your well wishes. I'm fine. I don't like to post too much personal stuff but I got myself in to this mess with my first post so a bit of an explanation and then leave it at that. Wifes Dad who is 88 and who i usually take to the pub on Xmas day had a stroke earlier in the year. Physically he's ok but mentally he's lost it a bit. Then his wife, my wifes mum [85] was told her cancer treatment wasn't working and she's been bedridden since March with my wife and her sister pretty much providing round the clock care. She died a couple of weeks ago. So yep it's been a shit year. But to top it off we did manage to get away to the Cotswolds for a weeks holiday. Well, i thought we did til she badly broke her arm on the first day and has to come home. Told she needed an operation within a week to reset the break. That was at the end of september and the op is now scheduled for January. It's giving her a fair bit of pain and discomfort.

There's one other major horror story too but that's not family related so I'll pass on that one. Roll on 2024. .

Sorry to hear all that. Hope 2024 improves for you.

Yep been a tradition since I was 18 and still do it now. It has gone from about 8 of us to 2 of us now. Venue has had to change down the years too. Used to be the Windmill now it's the Castle Gardens.

It sounds like a case of keep smiling and going as well as you can. I hope the coming Christmas and 2024 will be better for you and your family.

Sounds stressful and sad 20’s. Hope you and your wife are ok and wishing you a better year for 2024 ❤️

Newton Arms for us years ago. 12 until 2pm then leg it to the Dinmore which was 1pm to 3pm. Never used to drink at home then which has been a game changer.

Used to go to our local in the Yorkshire dales lovely atmosphere and guys used to do the round of three local pubs as a tradition. One year our Irish son in law came and rang his brother in Ireland who was really pissed off as their pubs didn’t open on Christmas Day

Squirrel, the Devi Arms then Thatched over the years with my dad and my late bro. Highlight of xmas and one of the best pub visits of the year 🍻

Iv gone in The Shovels for the last 30 years and will be doing so again this year,it’s a big tradition, usually about 10 of us.We have 2/3 pints before going to father in laws for the rest of the day
