Does it matter who scores for Pool?

Always thought it was a team games and as long as we win I do not care who scores, in fact I think it is a strength that many of our players are capable of scoring at least 5 goals a season.
The fact that Yates at present has not scored in open play does not mean he is playing badly and I think the team would suffer if he was dropped. Also I was pleased with Madine attitude when he came on even though he did not score.

Agreed.Just posted this reply on another thread..

We’re obviously not Liverpool.....
but Bobby Firminio’s main job as a number 9 isn’t to score the goals - They come from Salah & Mane. Besides the slight (!) difference in skill levels - what’s the difference to us having CJ and one other providing the goals from either side of the hard working Yates?
Yates may end up not being at the level we need but isn’t NC using him in a similar way?

Yes of course it does, if you wear the number nine on your shirt and don’t score goals, it means your crap ! 😜

You want your number 9 to score goals but you won't succeed unless other players chip in.
You only had to look at last season Gnado scored 18 the next best was Fonz on 7 you ain't going anywhere with that.

Seriously though, it doesn’t matter who scores the goals as long as you score enough, if goals are coming from everywhere else the pressure will be off Yates which in turn should help him relax and find it easier to score .

It's an interesting point. Last year, the was an undercurrent that Gnands wasn't good enough because all he did was score goals. I don't agree with that tbh, but it was there none the less.

This year there's an undercurrent that Yates isn't good enough cos he does all the stuff that people said Gnando didn't do and hasnt scored. He needs to be variously better/more selfish/greedy etc.

Clearly Armand Yates or Jerry Gnanduillet is the only answer.

Yates has a slight touch of Chris Long about him from recent players. Long worked really hard and made all the right runs but he just didn't seem to be clinical. He's been exactly the same at Motherwell. That odd kind of striker who seems to be there for the work. Heskey was like that, that ex arsenal lad who went to Watford who I've forgotten his name was like that too.

Fwiw I think Yates will score soon and they'll flow from there.

I think Yates will get goals too. We are still working out what to do in the final third, and we didn't actually create many chances yesterday. Yates only really had one. The patterns in the build up play are still in development, it's a bit chaotic still.

Proper old school thinking where your number 9 has to score all the goals... it’s the same people moaning about him saying we’re playing like Liverpool, but tell me the last time Firmino was the golden boot winner?

Might seem like he’s running round like a headless chicken, but people that know football will realise he’s occupying the centre halves to give our wingers one on ones with the full backs...

He had two in quick succession, both Bez crosses from left. Both crosses weren't *quite* right and I don't think he missed either really, more they just weren't the right ball. In fact, in some ways his energy in going for them made them seem more of a chance than perhaps they were.

I only saw one. 🤓 🤣

Everyone in the team will
Score this season bar maybe Maxwell.

Kevin Campbell?

Kevin Campbell?

No, more recent. Got it. Wellbeck! Was at United as well. Just worked his arse off but never scored much.

Campbell was decent. Brilliant at Everton before his legs went. Interesting fella to listen to as well.

Yes of course it matters. You as a fan might not care as long as we score and win but try telling that to a player who wears the number nine shirt and is in the team to get goals. It's not all about goals but he's expected to contribute and I'm sure he will do. The Golden Boot comment is just plain nonsense too.

I'd have Yates in my team everyday of the week over Gnando.

We will play a more attractive style of play. Faster flowing and interchangable

With Gnando we'd be having Feeney back and route one

Give the kid a break FFS. It wasn't long ago we were getting all giddy as to how pissed off Swindon were that we snaffled him and we were purring over the video footage of his goals

Let's face it. He also a damm site better than all of us supporters or else we'd be playing alongside him !!

Wellbeck got England caps as well. I never had any time for him because of his loan spell at Preston. Think he was playing when Wes chipped the penalty?

Strikers want to score but otherwise it barely matters at all. If the goals keep coming and Yates only really "chips in" no one will care.

He could so easily have scored yesterday had Mitchell not gone for glory. He is a different player from Gnando (who I would still like to see playing for us) but Yates is well deserving of his place in the starting line-up, works a lot harder than our last expensive pre-season signing ever did and will get on the score sheet before much longer methinks.

Grumpy today?
Did not expect you to bite on this thread but thought you would be all over the Spearing one, telling the Tranmere fan he doesn't understand football

Seems about right that. I honestly can't remember.

Thing I like about this team is we’re not relying on one person for goals, they’re gonna come from all over the pitch and different types of players.

Yates will bag a few but I can see him maybe doing the Firmino role at Liverpool. Unselfish striker who brings the wingers into the game

It probably doesn’t matter to the fans...
But to the guy whose playing centre forward it matters....
All a striker dreams about is scoring goals..
The elation that comes from the ball hitting the net....
He’s judged on scoring goals...
His confidence will be sky high if he’s banging em In....
Imagine how Gary Birtles felt not scoring In his first 26 for United....

Give Gnando a break FFS! They are very different players. Gnando would bring a lot to the current set-up, IMO.

The Yates/Firmino comparisons are understandable but pretty tenuous tbh. Firmino is a world class striker who plays for Brazil, and is technically brilliant, and quick. Yates is a battler, a good one, but not the same kind of player.

It doesn't matter IF you are winning.

However, when things are sticky and chances at a premium you want your best finisher (striker) to get that one chance, so in that respect you want him scoring regularly and in confident form.

Divided opinion Voyeur

I never took to him. For me the lad had one good season in his whole career (granted we needed him to have it last season), but I just don't fancy him much.

That said I've egg on my face currently as he's scored more than Yates so far this season 😂

He kept improving, he did pretty well the season before last too. He was a known bugger to defend against, powerful, knows where the net is, a big presence on the pitch. I've always admired technically gifted players most myself, and struggled with Gnando for a while, but I grew to like him, he had something different. Variety is good, characters are important. He was a centre stage character. That late goal at Doncaster where Feeney bombed up the right and Gnu bombed down the middle and the ending was inevitable. It was like the stampede of the wildebeest, a fantastic goal, and great theatre.

Have I ever pointed out that the players of League One voted him into the team of the season for League One last season?! It's not easy to get into that side.

We are still a work in progress & really we should have won our first 2 games, barring injuries & playing together more I believe we will improve. Hopefully goals will come from different players & our main strikeforce too. It won't take long for teams to try & mark CJ out of the game (if they can catch him) which is where others can capitalise on the space it creates. Exciting times ahead, if this virus doesn't screw things up again.

He's only scored one more than me also this season 🤣

They will have to at least double up on CJ which will leave spaces for others to exploit.
The fact he scored by going outside for 1 goal and cutting in for the other will have them having palpitations. People were comparing him to Ince but he was very one footed so easier to defend against.
I know many do not rate Turton but he is looking for the killer ball to play in CJ and has been quite successful

It’s like Big Ben Burgess.....
It’s good to have a plan B....
Madine provides that option...
With his experience good at running the clock down.....
