Blackpool Football Club can confirm the signing of promising young defender Douglas Tharme for an undisclosed fee from Southport.

The defender, 22, has signed a two-and-a-half year contract at Bloomfield Road, with the Seasiders holding an option for a further year.

Born in Birkenhead, Tharme has made 29 appearances to date for Southport, scoring two goals and claiming four assists.

As part of the deal, the centre-back will remain with the play-off sitting National League North side on loan until the end of the season.

I watched him 2 weeks ago against Gloucester. Don't remember him specifically but I remember them being very solid and comfortable on the ball at the back and a threat from set pieces.

Very random. Can he play CM?

Looks like we jumped in first 👍

Several EFL sides are tracking Southport defender Doug Tharme, Football League World has been told exclusively.

Sky Bet Championship pair Barnsley and Blackburn Rovers, as well as Sky Bet League One duo Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers are all keen on the player, who has done well for the National League North side this season.

Indeed, if he does leave the club, it appears he won’t have too far to travel with three of the four sides all based in the north-west of England, whilst Barnsley being in Yorkshire is far from the furthest trip he’d ever make.

Tharme, at the age of 22-years-old, only joined Southport in the summer transfer window but has quickly established himself as a first-team regular there, with the club currently 17th at the sixth tier of English football.

It’d be a big step up if he joined any of these four sides, then, but could represent a bargain if he proved a success.

Some snippets from when he signed for Southport last summer....

"Doug is a commanding 6 foot 4 inch centre back."

"Manager Liam Watson said “I have been aware of Doug for a couple of years and watched him develop. I thought he did well for Curzon Ashton last year and he is a good signing for Southport Football Club. He’s strong, athletic, very mobile and able to play with both feet. He’s very comfortable playing out from the back, but also dominant in the air and in the tackle."

Certainly sounds like the lad has the right attributes.

Southport are a winning machine at the moment. Think it is since Terry McPhillips became the assistant manager.

Saw him a couple of weeks ago v Charnock. Singled him out then as clearly destined for greater things/didn't really notice him particularly.

3 1 probably flattered Southport by the way.

I like this from when he signed for Southport, nice to see a 22 year old with a bit of application/get up and go (more than I had when I was 22 anyway!) :

"On signing Doug said ” Like everyone else I can’t wait to start playing football again and the move to Southport is perfect for me. I am still involved with coaching youngsters at Wrexham, I am doing an Open University Course through the PFA and work as a supply teacher in a Primary School and this will be a new challenge and one that I will relish”

In non-league, it looks like his career will have been somewhat Covid curtailed so far, so he may be a late developer hopefully.

Doug Tharme played for Southport, away to Chester, in the National League North yesterday. They got hammered 5-0, Rob Apter scored the 5th Chester goal.

I see Douglas Tharme scored twice for Southport in the 0-3 victory at Telford. I wonder if he's training with the first team players at Blackpool?

Will hopefully learn a lot from Marvin who made a similar move from National South to Championship in 3 seasons. If Tharme can become half the player of Marv and slot in at LCB then it’s a great piece of business. Good opportunity to work alongside a CB like Keogh too as well as a top coach in Critch. From the interviews he’s done it seems like the players gonna really appreciate the opportunity and he also sounds like an intelligent lad which always appears handy when it comes to developing players later in their career.

Notice Tharme came through the academy at Wrexham. They’ve always seemed to create players who had a good career in the EFL. There’s a midfielder called Jordan Davies at Wrexham atm I’d like to see step up, but I don’t know if Wrexham can have their best players poached anymore. I reckon they’ll be a Championship club too within 5 years.

Marv had got promoted from the Conference and been in League Two. Then League One with us, then Championship. Tharme will be attempting Conference North to Championship in one go. Bit of a difference in gap to bridge but who knows if he can make it?

Tharme played for Southport last night in the Lancashire Challenge Trophy Final against West Didsbury and Chorlton of the NW Counties League. Southport won 2-1. It's certainly a huge jump up to the Championship. I also wondered about Beesley though, he played most of his football outside the EFL before joining us, but he's looking like making the leap. And Tharme is a few years younger. In fact Tharme will be 23 in August, not quite as young as I thought.

Hence the ‘in 3 seasons’ bit. I reckon we’ll see Tharme given chance to train and play a bit pre-season and then a loan to League 2 or League 1 to test himself against better players in meaningful competition.
