EFL TV rights: Clubs vote through record five-year coverage deal with Sky Sports

Am staggered L1 will get that many games - is that a big increase on the usual coverage?

Red button I presume for midweek games where it's normally just the Championship so yes a massive change.

So our last season in Lge 1 we could pay on Ifollow now it looks like it'll be free on Sky.

Since when is Sky free?

looking at their offers today, it seems to me that my choice would be whether I want to pay 20 per month for Sky Sports on top of broadband costs for to get access to say 8 Blackpool games a season.

And those games won’t be available on TTV.

I would normally only get Sky for the Ashes (20 a month streaming) and was planning to sack it off in early August. No interest in watching EPL.

Or is there something I am missing here…

One other point, Sky will cover 285 League 1 games in 24-25.

Massively expanded coverage but expect at least 3 games every weekend to kick off at 1230.

Will be interesting to see how the money is divided. Based on next year where 8m would become 10.8 in the c/ship and 1m becomes 1.35 in L1.

That creates obvious problems.
So that's under the current deal? This kicks in after that at a higher level?

Pendant should have said free with a Sky sports subscription which I currently have so what ever extra games are shown would be free to me.

More games could be a consequence of more on the red button rather than full individual match coverage?

Makes you laugh they want to keep the 3pm black out but value it that much they’ll move 10 games out of 36 away from it each weekend. Tossers.
And they're showing one tomorrow, Leeds v Man City on Coronation Day at 3.00pm. Why?

Just applying a 35% increase to next years payments.

Between the cship and L1 the difference next year is £7m. If applied as I stated the difference the following year the shortfall would be £9.45m.

Lower leagues will need a lot of sugar daddies to even hope to compete at cship level.

It's already 1.32m in league 1, from what I saw.

Is it?

Either way 35% (as I saw it, could be 50%) is a much lower increase at that level. The differential is widened, if it's distributed along the same percentages. And I think that would cause some problems.

Could the c/ship concede fairer sharing? Tricky and a question along the lines of PL clubs sharing income....the c/ship will want to keep as much as they can I think, just as the PL does.

A new elite.

"In League One, teams receive £677,000 per season from the EFL and £645,000 from the Premier League.

League One reward

Combining the two payments, clubs in League Two receive £902,000 per season, while League One clubs receive £1.32million per season.

That represents a £420,000 gain for promoted clubs, despite the fact there is no upfront prize money."

That was this time last year.

But yes it would get wider still.

I wonder whether Sky are preparing for the loss of PL rights. The PL are actively considering creating their own streaming platform, which takes all the broadcasters out of the market.

Manufacture an interest in the EFL now, market it as the most competitive League on earth etc etc thereby reducing the perceived impact of losing the PL.

It is future proofing the subscription model of Sky or at least hedging their bets.

They did it with "a whole new ball game" they can do it with the 72.

Prefer 12:30 to later ones tbh.
I prefer 12.30 as a kick off time anyway to be honest. Am not sure when players train in the morning why we continue to have to wait until 3pm for games to be played. 12.30 at least gives away fans a chance to get home before last pints!

That wouldn't surprise me either TS. All the main players on both sides are scrambling around trying to reposition / reinvent themselves.

The money here is at the top end of expert estimates. My worry, as ever, is that the match day attending fan - particularly the away fan - gets more and more marginalised. And the promises about giving adequate notice of fixture changes are fine - until they start routinely breaking them.

It's been ordained by His Royal Highness and is an intrinsic part of the all day coronation pageant. 👍

Special kits, cannons and beefeaters, and Grealish in a gold coach pulled by 8 horses in full Etihad livery.

"From 2024/25, the EFL has announced iFollow and Sky Sports' red button coverage will effectively come to an end as more matches will be available to stream. Sky has also committed itself to providing more cameras at games to improve the product for supporters."

What is that Kieran Maguire phrase ? "Blinded by the cheque".

I do wonder whether familiarity with the product will under this deal lead to a measure of contempt for it. I think the overseas market will be the key to its success.

The blackout doesn't apply today - only when there are a majority of EPL and Championship games kicking off at 3 p.m. on a Saturday. Neither applies this weekend.

If you are an exile just get a decent VPN (IPvanish for me) and sign up for a season pass and never miss a game.
Even when it's on sky or selected for international broadcast (won't be many of them this season coming).
