England passing the ball across the pitchđŸ˜«

So frustrating to watch, one side to the other, then to the wingbacks, then back to the keeper for a big boot, or get caught out with a poor pass ! We don’t seem to be able to transition into midfield . None of the TV pundits seem to comment on it !
It's called being in control of a game, frustrating the opposition and not burning yourself out whilst in possession.

I love Andy Carroll. As Barney Roney put it...

"This is a footballer gifted a wonderful range of pre-industrial talents just as we entered the digital age; cursed by serious and repeated injury; and now left rusting like a cold-war destroyer"
Ouch!

I liked this one when he signed for Liverpool, "If Carroll reaches potential, then £30m is fair. Sadly, it’s more likely that he’ll wind up in a hot tub full of Blue WKD with Kerry Katona".

My original post started a good debate, a bit more adventure is required ! I can see the passes to make sat at home, if we lose the ball there is enough pace in the team to get behind the ball .

Out of touch would be the kindest way to sum this up...

There's ways of doing it though. Go back to Holloway, and especially Mk2 period, we were all about possession. We footballed West Ham into the ground at Wembley.

The last thing I would have called that team was boring. They were creative, still attacked minded with the fullbacks pushed on, and attacking width.

I think where England are getting the bad reaction is the pace they can drop to at times. In the opening game against Croatia I thought we looked pretty good really, solid and a lot of sharp passing. Scotland was the downside where we went back to how we normally look in friendlies, slow and ponderous. That's when possession retention comes across bad, IMHO.

Tonight’s game should give us some idea of how to pass , control and create opportunity’s ! Come on England ⚜

If you hadn't noticed Blackpool FC did exactly the same thing when in possession of the ball all season. Think they call it "recycling" the ball in which you simply keep possession until a player sees an opening.

It's not very entertaining but it certainly seems effective.
The problem is, although I still support the team and have renewed, I go to football to be entertained. It’s a lot of money to pay to be bored đŸ’©less.

England have been more forward looking in the 2 knock out games and hopefully the Ukraine success will give them the confidence to play forwards more. Our possession stats are not as good as Spain's or Italy's, but the biggest difference is chances created, we are way behind them. Our confidence going forward must be improving, and I think it probably needs to if we are going to win this. The Ukraine game was what we needed, to get that belief in the attacking third.

It's interesting people saying England and Blackpool play pretty much the same way - we had the best defensive record in the league last season, and so far England haven't conceded a goal. I think that supports the point, and while it may not always be easy on the eye it gives you a great platform to actually achieve things. The watertight defence also helps build confidence over time - that you can try a pass or run with the ball and if you lose it, it won't matter so much because the team is set up to win it back quickly. You could see with 'pool later in the season we saw some outstanding performances with increasing regularity - Peterborough, Gillingham at home, and all three play off games.
yep, good post. Yet people rip into England

I did too tbh after the Scotland game, but been thinking a fair bit about our style of play since the Germany game, and how we're setting the team up. I think we've started playing a certain way - this 'England DNA' thing that the FA were keen on, and the players are slowly getting used to it and it's beginning to pay dividends. I was surprised actually that, for all the talk about Italy's great run they're on, we've actually won 10 of our last 11, drawing the other and only one goal conceded in those games. Impressive stuff! I think I read somewhere that beating Germany was the first time since 66 that we've put out a major footballing nation in 90 mins in a tournament knockout game, so it bodes well if we have the courage to stick with it.

For all of 20s doubt about my England supporting credentials I've not had a go at the manager or the team in this tournament. I couldn't understand the negativity about the Scotland game because that point meant we qualified for the next phase with a game spare. Obviously, there was room for improvement and a few individuals had poor games, but the bigger picture was lost.

Group games are all about qualifying. Style is secondary.

Since then we've steadily improved with every game. That's the blueprint for tournament football success.

The seemingly endless passing then a sudden burst of energy has been a good ploy, but it can fall to pieces if we go a goal down, suddenly the opposition don’t care how long you pass the ball around amongst ourselves!

Do we have a plan B to cope with being 1 goal down that doesn’t end up with us being 2 down.
