Following on from the thread slating Harry Maguire last night, England players you've never really 'got'.
Mine was Darius Vassell - how he cropped up in so many England games still staggers me.

Andy Sinton
there is a theme developing here - Graham Taylor

Darren Bent
Chris Armstrong

Armstrong was Keegan, Bent was it Sven?

IMO Maguire merited a place earlier in his career, he carries a great attacking threat from set pieces. But nowadays, he will be exposed against top quality strikers with pace - it's inevitable. His confidence is shot as well - Timori needs a run in the team or Guehi.

I saw Ian Wright commented recently on his exclusion from the 1992 Euros under Taylor.

That was the tournament in which Alan Smith came on as a sub for Gary Lineker. I think Mr Wright has a point.

To be fair to Taylor as a club manager he was mostly excellent. I read a piece in the Guardian at the weekend about how he took Watford from a club in league 4 with a ramshackle ground to the top division. It focused on how football is so
much shinier now than in those days, but what we have lost in the process.

“Football clubs are about people” he apparently said, meaning everyone from the washerwoman to the directors.

And apparently he wasn’t afraid to bollock Elton John if he turned up looking wasted after a night out of drink and drugs….

Maitland-Niles, Calvert-Lewin, Drinkwater, Jenas…. The list of people getting undeserved caps handed out like sweeties is endless

Peter Shilton. I’m sure he was great in the 70s but from when I started watching England in the mid 80s I saw him out jumped by a midget at one World Cup and lobbed whilst stood on his line in another. And that was before getting nowhere near any penalties in that semi final.
He dived over a soft shot in 1973 to make us miss the 74 World Cup.

Clemence was streets better but picked in alternate matches as a cop out.

Trent A-A. They are trying to shoehorn him in as a mid but unsuccessfully so. If he’s not good enough to get in the team in his proper position, leave him it. Oh and Grealish now Pep has coached all of the flair out of him !

You don’t play for Pep when you are not good enough to play for England. Neither does he keep u if you have NO end product.
Surely there are plenty to point the finger at before you get to Grealish? It’s those who seem to have come in for meaningless friendlies and end up with under 10 caps who mostly deserve to be questioned.

C B Fry got his one cap just because he was good at cricket. I was picked to swim for my house at Baines on the basis I was in school footie team. When I explained that Derby Baths was not for me cos I couldn’t swim, I was told I’d be letting my house down.

Don't forget Maradona's 2nd goal in 86, Shilton came legging it out and then just seemed to fall over. Peter Reid was the most culpable mind.

He also stated that the reason he just fell in the general direction of the penalties in 1990 was because he didn't want to be embarrassed by choosing the wrong side.

He cost us at least one World Cup.

Indeed. In 1990 Shilton appeared to be wearing lead wellies. Similarly so did David Seaman in the 2002 World Cup. Absolutely past it.

Shilton was named top goalkeeper in italia 90. But he did forget he had legs.

As soon as the whistle went at the end of extra time in 1990 I knew we were out. Never got close to a pen. Norman Hunter got all the blame in 73 vs Poland at Wembley, as Wiz said, Shilton dived over the shot. Maradona was the dogs throughout the 86 WC. Had alot to thank Shilton for though. Can't stand his voice either but that's a separate issue 😁

Brian Greenhoff.
We had so many quality midfield players in the 70's yet Greenhoff was chosen for the WC qualifier vs Italy in '76.
Was converted from a CH in a poor Man Utd side.
Not even bang average.

Shilton was a brilliant keeper, indeed was a major part of Forest’s success in the late 1970,s but by 1990 his muscular frame had become a hindrance. Nevertheless he was always a better keeper than Ray Clemence, just should have been replaced by 1990.

Well it's about opinion and I really don't think he matches the hype. Ridiculous haircut and bandanna too. I reckon I'd have chance up front in a Pep team and I had half my knee replaced last June.

sorry but Terry Fenwick should of took Maradona out before he got to Shilton but was on a booking already so he bottled it.

Grealish simply serves as a position on the left of the field where City will maintain possession and not lose the ball as it will be recycled effectively. I'm not sure Pep sees him as an attacking threat at all, more as an effective passing cog in the City machine.

Which offers this England team fcuk all as you say.

Mate I’ve seen u play ur knee makes no difference to ur inability. His haircut is irrelevant.

Huddle could have been a worldy but the rules allowed running tackling and working without the ball all of which held him back.

As said before..he couldn't save a penalty to save his life.
