ENGLAND V ITALY match thread

It was like Saturday, England completely in control, we have never dominated a top team like that in my memory
I know Italy are not top, top notch ATM but they are always very competitive. They generally couldn't get the ball from us. We have taken 6 points from them, that is a great return.
Well gone Gareth, he is another great coach

you'd like to think so, but the likes of France and Argentina are a notch up on Italy and they have perhaps the best two attacking players in the world in Mbappe and Messi. It's been pretty easy to contain this Italian side but those two teams is much harder. That said, we are very close and as recently mentioned it could well be 'just on the day' as to who comes out on top.
We can beat both of them.

Argies won’t win the Euros

If we can't win something with Bellingham in midfield and Kane up front we might as well pack it in. These are absolute top end players and we've also got the likes of Foden, Walker and Trippier. As said above, this is Italy we're playing and we are making it look straightforward.
Other countries have good players too and when it gets to the business end its a knockout when anything can happen. Your also doing what the English media do all the time in hyping up our players to a level that sets them up to fail. We are promising and in with a good chance not world beaters who should just be able to turn up and win.

Southgate needs to work out where he wants Bellingham. If it's in an attacking position and we have to play two defensive midfielders, then we need another top midfielder. Won't win anything with Phillips playing in midfield. Harsh but true.

Phillips needs game time.
he should ask for a move if Pep won't play him, same goes for Mcguire

If he asks for a move, he would end up at Birmingham City. There wouldn't be many takers and should be nowhere near the first team if we have high ambitions. Nothing against him and you have to praise what he has achieved but Pep doesn't trust him and even played Bernado in a deeper role to replace Rodri. That says it all.

Maguire is slightly different. I actually think he has been badly treated at United.

He should really have been sent off last night, he needs to play for someone and start timing his interventions.
I would say somewhere like West Ham, Brighton may be a good environment for him, upper middle prem.
He may well end up back in Leeds where he is loved

I think this current group of players is better overall than the alleged golden generation. Some weaknesses no doubt, but it's time we won something again. Nowhere have I suggested we are entitele to do so. I was at Wembley to see us fail against Italy when, in all truth, we should have had too much for their ageing defenders. We were hesitant and didn't see it through. That has to change.

Danish view
Southgate is a god both of football and of sex and I am happy that you can get this win
Italy are good but nobody likes them
Maguire is a top footballer, give him the ballon d'or

I thought for 20 minutes or so last night we were pretty suspect at the back, could have gone more than one behind. I think we could build a better defence than that, maybe around Colwill and Dunk. and Phillips offered little, when we could have had Maddison or TAA on the pitch.

i discussed that with you prior to the game. Southgate's cautious approach. The question is did going 1-0 so early change that? It had to of course.

I think it could be worth trying Grealish in the middle alongside Rice and Bellingham.
I think it's Grealish best position but as I've said before there's a lot of competition in there for that midfield attacking position.

You did and yes it did. I think with Southgate's mindset it possibly helps for us to go behind early!

Who would you pick? I would either play TAA and allow Bellingham to get forward, or play Maddison as an attacking midfielder.

I was lucky enough to be there last night. Some of the comments are a little silly. We just won a game against a decent Italy side comfortably having gone behind and in doing so qualified for the finals with 2 games to spare. We have some generational talent in Bellingham, Foden, Saka, Rice, etc. Coupled with some senior players who are at their peak. Just enjoy having the likes of Kane, Stones, Walker, etc, we are in as good a place as any team in Europe. I'm already looking forward to following the 3 lions in Germany.

I think it matters little what I think. Southgate has this massive sense of loyalty to his players even though in some cases it perhaps goes too far. I think the first problem you have to solve is who are the first choice front 3. Kane is an obvious choice, which I'm sure you'll now agree on. And Saka probably is too on the wide right. So wide left? Well Rahford didn't do his chances any harm last night and he's been pretty much bang in form for a good while. I'll gladly admit I lost faith in him a couple of years back. I don't know what's changed but he seems totally focussed on his football again and it's shows and is paying dividends. So at this point in time that's what I think is Southgate's likely front 3. So no place there for Foden and perhaps expectedly so also Grealish. Now for me, i think as an attacking midfielder that is definitely Grealish's best position but clearly Southgate and Pep don't as they start him out wide. So Foden. Where is his best position. I think he is more suited to the wide role than Grealish is but Foden can also play in that central midfield role.

Now without doubt Bellingham and Rice are absolute certainties for two of the midfield 3. I want to discount Henderson but Southgate doesn't even though I think he'll start to get less and less minutes from here on in.[ He'll probably be captain against Malta though] but once qualifiers are out of the way then preparation starts in earnest. So who do we have left of the possible candidates[ I'm now discounting Mount] We've got Phillips, Maddison, Foden and TAA for just one position. Of those four, I don't think Southgate sees Maddison as a regular starter, although current form would definitely have him in there. I also don't think he sees Foden as first choice there too and that's harder to see why not. His loyalty to Phillips is imo way over the top and it's hard to criticise anyone after last nights game but he was the one who never had any sort of positive impact on the game. But Southgate does like that tigerish quality in players. Players who can put a foot in but for me against the other best teams n the world Phillips is the one who'll struggle. That leaves TAA who can play that defensive role and for me he can add much more than Phillips can. He's so mch better on the ball than Phillips, and even though he sits deep, is always forward thinking and can play much more penetrative balls through than Phillips. So he'd be my choice but as it stands Phillips has the shirt and Southgate won't change that.

I don’t think we’ll win a tournament if we play two of Rice, Phillips or Henderson.

I prefer 20togo options of TAA or Grealish, players that can do something a bit different.

Aside from him being really good, another strength of Bellingham is his ability to play (modern day terms) 6, 8 or 10. So against defensive teams he can play alongside Rice with a Grealish or Maddison (or Mount - remember him...) further forward. Against the top sides, you can start with 2 defensive shields and Bellingham as 10 and then move it around if you need to create or want to go for it.

And lets enjoy the attacking options that are available to the coach rather than trying to cram all of them into a side. Balance is sometimes the best answer and stops the old Gerrard/Lampard situation where players end up nullifying each other.

For me it's TAA or Maddison, depending on form, fitness and or the opponent. With Foden a strong possibility too. Foden can play more than one position and deserves game time.
