To be fair there were only a couple of new faces . . . James Bracey came in for Ben Foakes and Ollie Robinson / Olly Stone came in for Ben Stokes.
Bracey has had a bit of a nightmare but Robinson & Stone did OK so I don't think you can blame the new faces too much.
The big problem we have (and have had for years) is the top order . . . Burns, Sibley & Crawley consistently fail to deliver. Yes they've all had the odd decent knock but we never lay the foundations for a big total.
In these two tests the seam attack of Jimmy, Broad & Wood haven't performed to their usual standard.
Root & Pope have also been below par . . . but are clearly first choice players with test pedigree. The jury is out on Lawrence but I think he deserves a decent run.
Out of the players missing there is only Stokes & Foakes that would be a definite starters in out best test team IMO.
Buttler is an option as a batsman only & obviously Woakes & Archer would be contenders for bowling slots for certainly not guaranteed places.
