England's Midfield

Southgate has got to play Trent and John Stones in midfield.
The new guard. Absolutely outstanding when they play there at club level.
Maybe with Rice - but not sure about him.
Loads of other defenders to fill their boots.

Time to build the midfield round the most celebrated of the lot, won more than the rest of them put together....Jordan Henderson. I'd rest him for the Malta game as he's tired after getting Liverpool into the Europa league and unleash him for the big one against North Macedonia.

Where to start with this…

There’s a valid case for Trent in mf but Stones ffs?

Neither start the match in midfield, you do realise this don’t you?

Please - you need therapy

Trent would be right back in most countries national team.
Not in front of Walker who in my opinion is one of the best RB in the world I'd even put Trent behind Reece James(if fit) & Trippier.
TA has been poor the majority of the season was part blamed for Liverpool's poor form earlier and is average as a defender.

Can he play in midfield maybe but he'd have to do it at club level first before England as there are plenty better to pick in the 3.

Stones is needed at CB as that's the one position we don't have plenty of options.

Trent wouldn't be a right back in most pub teams never mind National teams, he is a ball watcher and as much use as a chocolate fireguard as an out and out defender.

Most of my Liverpoool supporting pals concede that.

Now wide midfield or a wing back in a 3-5-2 is a different story, the lad is a superb crosser of a ball and a real threat going forward, but defensively Kyle Walker and Reece James are miles ahead of him, and the most important job of any defender is to defend.

What !! You clearly haven't seen Man City lately where Pep has been playing Stones in midfield, and he's been fantastic.
If he's good enough to play midfield for Pep ...

Yep, Stones has started plenty of games recently for City as the holding midfielder and he's done brilliantly so you make a valid point about playing the same role for England. Problem is that England are desperately short of top class centre halves so that's why Stones has to remain at the back. As for TTA, he too has done very well in midfield too as a creative player. England have plenty of good right backs so he's more of a chance in midfield but he's got people like Bellingham and Rice ahead of him. But it's certainly an option for Southgate to have such a good utility player available.

Fair enough, but it’s more of a ‘hybrid’ role where he can play either position depending on the state of the game. Trent has never started in mf for Liverpool from what I’ve seen. He starts RB but just moves into midfield when Liverpool are dominating possession.

It’s all a moot point really as Southgate isn’t and probably will never be as dynamic as Pep or Klopp when it comes to tactics.

Agree with all that although I'm sure he's started the odd game for Liverpool with 2 other full backs in the team. Southgate's never really rated Trent anyway so that's another reason why it probably won't happen.

Exactly, as playing him in midfield with two other CBs in the team improves our defence and attack at set pieces and corners.
I quite like Dunk - but doubt he'll get a chance as he plays for Brighton.
Gotta be some decent CBs out there other than Mings and Cody.
Looks like McGuire might be sacrificed due to lack of game time.

Dunk is the one. He should have got way more than one cap. Southgate ignored him and probably Brighton was the reason. They've had such a good season that Southgate 's coming round to the idea but you have a player who should now have experience at international level virtually making his debut again if he plays. When you consider our lack of quality at CB it's been a mistake.

Dunk is decent, but then again so were Mings, Coady and others when playing for their club with players they knew well around them and in a system they played every week. But stepping up to International level sometimes is a step too far for some. But yep, no problem with seeing what Dunk can do.

That's the problem, there isn't, for some strange reason we have a huge lack of talent at CB in England especially when you consider some of the donkeys that have been capped by England, Mings, Keane, McGuire the list goes on.

Stones was outstanding for city in midfield today. Loads of first time balls perfectly weighted. He was the linchpin between attack and defence. I was very impressed that a converted cb needs very little time to receive and pass the ball. Broke up plenty of attacks and, as others have said, very useful when needed in defence or at set pieces in attack.

Could copy city, play 3 at the back and an extra man in midfield.
Could do but seeing as Stones is miles ahead of any CH we've got I'd say he's needed there ,also would that work with a back 3 for England who knows and you'd still pick him with Walker one side and maybe Shaw other.

With Saka, Foden, Grealish, Rashford, Kane, Wilson and Toney*, we definitely have good options in the final 3rd. Bellingham and Rice are our best midfielders. I don't rate Mount and Phillips has been woefully out of form and fitness. Of the 2 mentioned in the OP, I'd probably say TAA is probably the best suited to playing in midfield. Stones has been a revelation but his position is a defender in a 4 which then turns into a 3 when in possession and he moves into the midfield. Against lesser opposition it just means you have an extra midfielder. An interesting option for Southgate to see if he asks him to do the same against Macedonia and Malta.

Either way Stones is bette rthan Phillips full stop, in fact when City bought Phillips I thought "What the heck, why would City needs him" the only thing that will ensure is Leeds relegation.
I’ve always liked Phillips. And in my opinion he’s a better DM and Stones is a better CB.

It’s an interesting one isn’t it. He’s so strong in the air that I feel that England need him further back but City have that much aerial strength that they can afford to use Stones as the shielding player we’ve recently seen.

I suppose the question is what is the difference between playing in a 4 and pushing forward, or playing in front of a 3 and dropping back? Not much would be my guess.

Graves, Pep clearly feels Stones in midfield is better than Phillips in midfield and in all fairness he's better qualified than you or I on the subject, as far as England are concerned we have to have JS at CB as we are so poor in that area, Phillips can compete with Rice, Mount, Bellingham, Foden and company in midfield, for me he doesn't get in the side.

..........................Pickford......................
........Walker.....Stones........Shaw................

Foden..Bellingham..Grealish..Rashford

This is our best team easily 3-2-4-1 City styleeee (allows the front 5 to press)

Really like that team.
Maybe swap Shaw for Dan Burn - to give more defensive height.
Shaw's a bit iffy. Burn over performing as a footballing left back well over 6ft.
