Only just seen this and it happened on Sept 1st. So apologies if there's already been
a thread on it.
Ernie Shavers has died at age 78. Possibly one of the hardest punching heavyweights ever and one
of the best to have never won a world title. Fought Ali and Holmes for the world title and famously
floored Holmes with a terrific punch, which to this day I don't know how he got up from it. I don't
think Holmes does either.

Remember being at a sportsman’s dinner years ago with Ernie Shavers who was introduced as “The former Heavyweight Champion of the World”” then a pause…..

“Well, until Larry Holmes got up”.

Met him in a hotel in Chester, what a lovely gent he was and he spent a good while talking to us.

Wouldn't have wanted a punch of him, his hands were huge! RIP

He lived around the Wirral and was a really popular local figure around Merseyside, working as a minister and sometime doorman. You wouldn't argue would you? ! Will be missed.
